Vintage 1977 Continental Jacket & Cap Set #1411

MATERIALS:
Sirdar Octo, 50 g Balls: Main Colour [MC] - 11 [12,13] Balls; 1st Contrast Colour [CC1] – 4[4,5] Balls; 2nd Contrast Colour [CC2] – 4[5,5] Balls
1 Pair Each Knitting Needles #10 & #8
5 Buttons

MEASUREMENTS:
Fits Size = 81cm [86cm,91cm] - 32” [34”,36”]
Finished Size = 7.5cm [3”] Larger
Length = 69cm [27”]
Sleeves = 43cm [17”]

TENSION:
11 ½ Sts & 15 Rows = 5cm [2”]

NOTE: Garment is worked sideways.

BACK:
Beg at side edge.
Use #8 needles & MC, cast on 112 sts [all sizes], & beg P row.

Work 17 rows in reverse st st, working striped patt of 4 rows each MC, CC1, MC, & CC2 thru out.

Cast on 41 sts at beg of next row for armhole.

Work further 5 rows, end at shoulder edge.

Inc 1 st at beg next & foll 6th rows, until 157 sts, & place marker on each inc.

Cont without shaping until work meas 14 [15,17] cm – 5 ½” [6”,6 ½”] from beg, end at shoulder edge.**

Place marker at shoulder edge for back neckline.

Work approx 8cm [3 ¼”] from marker, end with 2 rows MC.

Place marker for centre back neck.

Cont in patt, compl to match other side, place marker on shoulder line,, work decs to match incs & cast off 41 sts for armhole.

Cast off at same tension as cast on.

RIGHT FRONT:
Work as back to **.

SHAPE NECK:
Dec 1 st at beg next & at same edge of every row until 139 sts rem.

Cont straight until work meas 21 [22, 24] cm – 8 ¼” [8 ¾”,9 ¼”] from beg.

Cast off at same tension as cast on.

LEFT FRONT:
Work as right front, work shaping at other end of row.

RIGHT SLEEVE:
Use #8 needles & MC, cast on 86 sts & beg P row; work 4 rows.

Cont in patt, inc 1 st at beg next & foll 6th rows until 94 sts.

Cont straight until work meas 18cm [7”] from cast on, end at top edge.

Cast on 21 [23,25] sts at beg next row for saddle shoulder.

Cont until work meas 23cm [9”], end at top edge.

Cast off 21 [23,25] sts at beg next row, then compl sleeve to match other side, dec 8 times to match inc.

Cast off at same tension as cast on.

LEFT SLEEVE:
Work as 1st sleeve, work shaping at other end of row.

HOOD:
Use #8 needles & same colour as front edge of jacket, cast on 160 sts & work in patt as back until 25cm [10”] from beg. Cast off.

POCKETS:
Use #8 needles & MC, cast on 34 sts & work in patt until 15cm [6”], end with 4th row of stripe. Cast off.

POCKET TOPS:
Use #10 needles & MC, cast on 9 sts & work in K1, P1 rib to fit top of pockets. Cast off.

CUFFS:
Use #10 needles & MC, cast on 31 sts & work in rib to fit lower edge of sleeves. Cast off.

FINISHING:
Join shoulder seams to saddle.

Fit sleeves to armholes & st in place.

Join side & sleeve seams.

Turn 3cm [1 ¼”] at lower edge to inside for hem & sl st in place.

Join centre back seam of hood.

Fit hood to neckline, place seam at centre back neck & st in place.

Join cuffs & attach to lower edge of sleeves.

St pocket tops to pockets & attach as shown.

FRONT BAND:
Use #10 needles & MC, cast on 15 sts & work in K1, P1 rib until sufficient length to fit along left front to neckline. DO NOT cast off, fit band in place.

Mark places of 5 buttons, 1st at neckline, lower one 10cm [4”] from lower edge, 3 more evenly spaced bet.

Cont in rib to fit around hood & down right front, make buttonholes to match markers as follows:

1ST BUTTONHOLE ROW: Rib 6, cast off 3 sts, rib to end.

2ND BUTTONHOLE ROW: Rib, cast on 3 sts over cast off sts of prev row.

Sew on buttons.

CAP:
Use #8 needles & MC, cast on 121 sts.

Work 8 rows in K1, P1 rib.

Cont in st st & patt, beg P row until work meas 13cm [5”] from cast on, end with P row.

NEXT ROW: * K10, K2 tog, rep from * to last st, K1.

NEXT ROW: P.

NEXT ROW: * K9, K2 tog, rep from * to last st, K1.

Cont to dec in this way, each alt row until 11 sts rem.

Break off yarn, thread thru rem sts, draw up tightly & fasten.

Join back seam
