Vintage 1970s Mod Lace Cover-Up #1331


Fashion (and fun) for beach and pool parties: collect the shells then crochet this cover-up.

MATERIALS:
7 (8, 8) balls Sirdar 6 ply, Goldseal Wash 'n' Wear (40g)
1 Crochet Hook #4.50
Shells for trimming

GAUGE/ TENSION:
5 ch. loop to 3 cm (1in.)
 
MEASUREMENTS:
Bust = 81 (86, 91) cm – 32” (34”-36”)
Length = 132 cm (52”)
Sleeve = 41cm (16”)

BACK:
Beg at shoulder, make 14 CH.

FOUNDATION ROW: 1 DC in 8th ch from hk, * 5 CH, sk 2 CH, 1 DC in next  CH, rep from * once.

PATTERN ROW: 7 CH, * 1 DC in 3rd CH of 5 CH lp, 5 CH, rep from * to end, work last DC in 5th of TCH prev row.

Rep last row 4 times. Do not break off yarn.

Work 2nd shoulder piece to match, using separate yarn, work 27 (31-35) CH, loosely at end of last row, join with sl st to 1st shoulder at beg of last row. Break off 2nd shoulder.

NEXT ROW: 7 CH, 1 DC in next lp, 5 CH, 1 DC in next lp, 5 CH, 1 DC in sl st (5 CH, sk 3  CH, 1 DC in next CH) 7 (8-9) times, (5 CH, 1 DC in next lp) 3 times work last DC in TCH - (13 (14-15) 5-CH lps.)

Cont in patt until work meas 17 (18, 18) cm - 6 ½” (7”, 7”) from beg.

SHAPE ARMHOLES:
** Use sep strand make 8 CH at end of row away from hk.

Return to other end, 11 CH, 1 DC in 8th CH from hk, 5 CH, sk 3 CH, 1 DC in 3rd CH of next lp, patt to last 8 CH, (sk 3 CH, 5 CH, 1 DC in next CH) twice. ** - (17 (18-19) 5-CH lps.)

Cont patt, row until 38 cm (15”) from beg. Change to 7 CH lps with 9 CH to turn work 10 rows, change to 9 CH lp with 11 CH to turn work 6 rows.

Cont inc by working 6 rows in 11 CH loops, 3 rows with 13 CH lps, 2 rows with 15 CH lps, 2 rows with 17 CH lps, finally to needed length with 19 CH lps, always turning with 2 ch. more than loop as before.

Finishing Row: 15 ch. to turn, 1 d.c. in centre ch. of loop, * 11 ch., 1 d.c. in centre ch. of next loop, rep. from * to end, working last d.c. in 11th of turning ch. Fasten off.

FRONT:
Work shoulder pieces as back, 
but rep. patt, row 8 times instead of 4 times. Work neck, complete as back.

Crochet chain mesh loops, sew large and small shells on hemline and sleeves.

SLEEVES:
Make 22 ch. loosely.

Foundation Row: 1 d.c. in 9th ch. fromhook, * 5 ch., miss 3 ch., 1 d.c. in next ch., rep. from * to end - 4 loops.

1st Row: 7 ch., * 1 d.c. in centre ch. of loop, 5 ch., rep. from * to end, working last d.c. in centre ch. of 9 ch. loop.

2nd Row: 7 ch., 1 d.c. at base of 7 ch., * 5 ch., 1 d.c. in centre ch. of next loop, rep. from * to end, working last d.c. in 5th of 7 ch., 7 ch, 1 d.c. at base of 7 ch. - 6 loops.

Rep. last 2 rows twice - 10 loops - then rep. 1st row only 4 times.

Next Row: Work as given for armhole shaping of back from ** to ** - 14 loops.

Change to 7 ch. loops with 9 ch. to turn work 4 rows, work 4 rows in 9 ch. loops, 3 rows 11 ch. loops, 2 rows 13 ch. loops, cont, in 15 ch. loops to desired length, allowing for stretch when trimmed with shells, and turning with extra 2 ch. for each row.

Finishing Row: 13 ch. to turn, 1 d.c. in centre ch. of loop, 9 ch., 1 d.c. in centre ch. of loop, rep from * to end, working last d.c. in 9th of turning ch. Fasten off.

MAKE UP:
Using flat-st. join shoulder 
seams, set sleeves to armholes, sew in position, join side and sleeve seams. 

Work 2 rounds d.c. around neckline. 

Sew shells on hemline, sleeves, place larger shells around hemline of frock and sleeves, scatter smaller shells over sleeves below armholes.
