Vintage 1970s Mod Cotton Slip Dress #1338


Utterly feminine, this slip of a dress, for midsummer parties by day & by night, will flatter your figure & your summer tan. Dress is crocheted in cool cotton yarn & directions are given for 34” with changes for 36” in brackets.

MATERIALS:
16 (17) oz Strutts Milford Knitting Cotton #8
#15 or #2½ Aero Crochet Hook
Large Button Mould
1 Press-Stud

GAUGE/ TENSION:
26 TR & 18 Rows = 4” sq
 
SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS:
DC = double crochet [US is a SC]
TR = treble [US is a DC]
SHL = shell
GR = group
DTR = double treble [US is a TR]

BACK:
Make 159 (165) CH

1ST ROW: 1 TR in 3rd CH from hk, 1 TR in each CH to end, 3 CH turn: 156 (162) TR.

2ND ROW (RS): * Sk 2 TR, 1 DC in next tr, 3 CH, rep from * to last 3 TR, sk 2 TR, 1 DC in last TR, 3 CH turn: 52 (54) 3 CH lps.

3RD ROW: 3 TR in each 3 CH LP, 1 CH turn.

4TH ROW: 1 DC in 1st TR, sk 2 TR, * 7 TR shl in sp. bet next 2 TR, sk 3 TR, 1 DC in sp. bet next 2 TR, sk 3 TR, rep from * to end, 1 DC bet last TR & 3 TCH, 3 CH turn.

5TH ROW: 2 TR in 1st DC, 1 CH, 1 DC in centre TR Of shl, * 1 CH, 3 TR in next DC, 1 CH, 1 TR in centre TR of shl, rep from * to last shl, 1 CH, 2 TR in last DC,1 CH turn.

6TH ROW: 1 DC in 1st TR, 3 CH, * 1 DC in next DC, 3 oh., 1 DC in centre TR Of next 3 TR gr., 3 CH, rep from * to last DC, 3 CH, 1 DC in top of 3 TCH, 3 CH turn.

7TH ROW: Rep 3rd row.

8TH ROW: Rep 4th row.

9TH ROW: Rep 5th row, 3 CH turn.

10TH ROW: Pick up back LP only, work 1 TR in each st., 3 CH turn: 156 (162) TR. 

Rows 2nd to 10th form patt. On each patt, rep, make sure that shls are directly above each other.

Cont, in patt, dec 6 sts evenly spaced on every 10th row until 108 (114) TR rem.

Cont, in patt, to end of 13th patt, (or length needed to underarm).

SHAPE ARMHOLE:
1ST ROW: Sl st over 6 sts, 3 CH, sk 2 TR, 1 DC in next TR, patt, until 6 sts rem, 1 CH turn.

2ND ROW: Sl st over 3 sts, 3 CH, 3 TR in each LP until 1 LP rems, 1 CH turn.

3RD ROW: 1 DC in 1st DC, 7 TR shl in next sp, patt, to last TR, 1 DC in last TR, 4 CH turn.

4TH ROW: 1 DC in centre TR of shl, 1 CH, 3 TR in next DC, patt, to last shl, 1 DC in centre TR of shl, 1  CH turn.

5TH ROW: 1 DC in 1st DC, 3 CH, 1 DC in centre TR Of 3 TR gr, patt, to last DC, 1 DC in last DC, 3 CH turn.

6TH ROW: 1 TR in 1st 3 CH LP, 3 TR in each LP to last LP, 1 TR in last LP, 1 CH turn.

NEXT ROW: Work 10th patt, row, dec 6 sts evenly spaced along row: 72 (78) TR.

Work 15 rows in patt, end with 3rd row.

SHAPE NECK:
NEXT ROW: 1 DC in 1st TR, 7 TR shl in next sp, patt, until 3 shls compl, 1 DC in next sp, 3 CH, turn.

Work 2 more rows in patt, on these sts. Fasten off.

Sk 12 (14) 3 TR grs across neckline. Join cotton in next sp, 1 DC in same sp, 1 shl in next sp; work to corres with other side.

FRONT:
SIZE 34: Work same as back until 11 patts, are compl (or 2 fewer than back to underarm).

SIZE 36: Work same as back until 120 TR rem, cont, as size 34.

BOTH SIZES:
DIVIDE FOR FRONT OPENING:
1ST ROW: Work as 2nd patt, row until 18 (20) lps have been worked. Cont, in patt, on these sts.

Keep front edge straight, dec 6 sts evenly spaced on every 10th row until 13 patts, (or same number as back to underarm) are compl from beg.

SHAPE ARMHOLES:
1ST ROW: Sl st over 6 sts, 3 CH, sk 2 TR, 1 DC in next TR, patt, to end, 3 CH turn.

2ND ROW: 3 TR in each LP until 1 LP rem, 1 CH turn.

3RD ROW: 1 DC in 1st TR, 1 shl in next sp, patt, to last sp, 1 DC in last sp, 3 TR bet last TR & 3 TCH, 1 CH tum.

4TH ROW: 1 DC in 1st TR, 1 CH, 3 TR in next DC, patt, to last shl, 1 DC in centre TR of shl, 1 CH turn.

5TH ROW: 1 DC in 1st DC, 3 CH, 1 DC in centre TR of next 3 TR gr, patt, to last DC, 1 DC in last DC, 3 CH turn.

6TH ROW: 3 TR in each LP to last LP, 1 TR in last LP, 1 CH turn.

7TH ROW: 1 DC in 1st TR, 1 shl in next sp, 1 DC in next sp, patt, to last sp, 1 DC in last sp, 3 TR bet last TR & 3 TCH, 1 CH turn.

8TH ROW: 1 DC in 1st TR, 1 CH, 3 TR in next DC, 1 CH, patt, to last DC, 3 TR in last DC, 3 CH turn.

9TH ROW: Work in back LP only, 1 TR in each st, dec 2 (4) sts, evenly spaced, until 24 (30) TR, 3 CH turn.

Work 8 rows in patt, on these sts.

18TH ROW: Rep 10th patt row, dec 6 sts evenly spaced: 18 (24) tr.

Cont, in patt, until armhole meas same as back. Cut cotton.

Join cotton in centre st & work other side to corres.

BELT:
Make 204 CH.

1ST ROW: 1 DC in 2nd CH from hk, * 3 CH, sk 2 CH, 1 DC in next CH, rep from * to end.

Start at same CH as last DC worked, crochet along other side of CH in same way, 3 CH turn.

NEXT ROW: 3 TR, in each 3 CH LP on both sides. Fasten off.

BUTTON:
Make 3 CH, join with sl st.

1ST RND: 5 DC in ring.

2ND RND: Work in back LP only, 2 DC in each DC, do not join.

3RD RND: In back LP only work, * 1 DC in 1st st, 2 DC in next st, rep from * to end of rnd.

Rep 3rd row twice more.

NEXT ROW: 1 DC in each DC.

Rep last rnd until large enough to cover mould. Fasten off.

FINISHING:
Press on WS with hot iron & damp cloth.

Join side & shoulder seams.

ARMHOLE EDGING:
Join cotton at underarm.

Work 3 rows DC around armholes.

NECK EDGING:
With RS facing, join cotton at front opening.

Work 2 rows DC around neckline.

NEXT ROW: 1 DC in 1st DC, * 3 CH, sk 2 DC, 1 DC in next DC, rep from * to end, make sure there are an even number of CH lps.

NEXT ROW: (2 TR, 1 DTR, 1 CH, 1 DTR, 2 TR) in 1st 3 CH LP (shl made), * 1 DC in next LP, 1 shl in Next LP, rep from * to end. Fasten off.

Insert button in cover & sew to 1 end of belt.
