Vintage 1960’s Moderne Raglan Sleeve Coat #977

This modern classic will be quickly crocheted & become a versatile staple in your wardrobe favorites!

SIZE: 
Directions are for size 12-14, with changes for size 16-18 shown in brackets.

MATERIALS:
Bear Brand or Fleisher’s Souffle, color A, 19 [20] balls
and Bear Brand or Fleisher’s Loop-Aire 1 oz skeins, color B, 4 [4] skeins
3 Plastic ring 1 ½” diameter for making buttons,
OR 3 Decorative buttons 1 ½” diameter
Boye crochet hook #9/J, or size you require to obtain gauge.
Boye crochet hook #6/H

GAUGE:  
Size #9/J hook
11 sc = 4”       6 rows = 2”

MEASUREMENTS:
Bust, buttoned:  46” [50”]
Width of back at underarm:  22” [24”]
Width of sleeves at underarm:  16” [18 ½”]

NOTE:  
Coat is worked with 2 strands of yarn.

Mark 1st row of each piece for wrong side.

BACK:  
With #9 hk & strands A, ch 62 [68].

1ST ROW:  Insert hk in horizontal thread atr back of ch, work 1 sc in 2nd & each rem st of ch – 61 [67] sc.

2ND ROW:  Ch 1, turn, work 1 sc in each sc.

Rep 2nd row until 87 rows – about 29” from beg, end on wrong side.  

Mark for underarm.

RAGLAN SHAPING:
1ST ROW:  Turn, work 1 sl st in each of 1st 4 [5] sc, ch 1, 1 sc in each sc to within 4 [5] sc of end, sl st in next sc.

2ND ROW:  Ch 1, turn, sk sl st, work 1 sc in each sc – 53 [57] sc.

3RD ROW:  DEC ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in 1st sc, draw up lp in each of next 2 sc, yo & thru 3 lps on hk – a dec, work 1 sc in each sc to within 3 sc of end, dec 1 st as before, work last sc.

Rep dec each side in same way every 2nd row 10 [12] times more – 31 [31] sc.

Then rep dec each side every row 9 times – 13 sc.  Fasten off.

LEFT FRONT:  
With #9 hk & 2 strands A, ch 37 [40.

Work sc as for back on 36 [39] sc until same number of rows as back to underarm marker, end on wrong side.  Mark for underarm.

RAGLAN SHAPING:
1ST ROW:  Turn, work 1 sl st in each of 1st 4 [5] sc, ch 1, 1 sc in each sc to end.

2ND ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each sc—32 [34] sc.

3RD ROW:  DEC ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in 1st sc, dec 1 sc, work even to end – front edge. 

Keep front edge even, rep dec at raglan edge every 2nd row 2 [4] times more – 29 [29] sc.

Work 1 row even after last dec row, end at raglan edge.

NECK SHAPING:
NEXT ROW:  Rep dec at raglan edge, work to within 3 sc of neck edge, dec 1 sc, work last sc – 27 sc.

Rep dec each side every 2nd row 7 times more – 13 sc.

Then dec 1 sc at raglan edge every row, at same time, cont to dec 1 sc at neck edge every 2nd row until 4 sc rem in last dec row.

Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in 1st sc, dec 1 sc, 1 sc in last sc — 3 sc.

Ch 1, turn, draw up lp in each of 3 sc, yo & thru all lps on hk.  Fasten off.

RIGHT FRONT:  
Work same as left front until 37 rows from beg, end on wrong side.

BUTTONHOLE ROWS:  
Ch 1, turn, work 1 sc in each sc of 1st 2 sc, ch 2, sk 3 sc, work 1 sc in each sc to end.

NEXT ROW:  Ch 1, turn, work 1 sc in each sc & in each st of ch.

Work 26 [28] rows even.

Rep 2 buttonhole rows.

Work even until 87 rows from beg, end on wrong side.  Mark for underarm.

RAGLAN SHAPING:
1ST ROW:  Ch 1, turn, work 1 sc in each sc to within 4 [5] sc of end, sl st in next sc.

2ND ROW:  Ch 1, turn, sk sl st, work 1 sc in each sc – 32 [34] sc.

3RD ROW:  DEC ROW:  Ch 1, turn, work 1 sc in each sc to within 3 sc of end, dec 1 sc, work last sc – raglan edge.

Keep front edge even, rep dec at raglan edge every 2nd row 1 [3] times more – 30 [30] sc.

Work 1 row even after last dec row, end at front edge.

NEXT ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each of 1st 2 sc, ch 3, sk 3 sc for 3rd buttonhole, work across row, dec for raglan at end.

Work 1 row even, end at front edge.

NECK SHAPING:
NEXT ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in 1st sc, dec 1 st, work across row, dec for raglan at end – 27 sc.

Complete to correspond to left front.

SLEEVES:  
With #9 hk & 2 strands A, ch 34 [38].

Work sc as for back on 33 [37] sc for 5 rows.

INC ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in 1st sc, 2 sc in next sc – an inc, 1 sc in each sc to within 2 sc of end, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in last sc.

Rep inc each side every 6th [4th] row 2 [3] times; every 4th row 3 times – 45 [51] sts.

Work 3 rows even after last inc row, end on wrong side – about 11” from beg.  Mark for underarm.

RAGLAN SHAPING:
1ST ROW:  Turn, work 1 sl st in each of 1st 4 [5] sc, ch 1, 1 sc in each sc to within 4 [5] sc of end, sl st in next sc.

2ND ROW:  Ch 1, turn, sk sl st, work 1 sc in each sc – 37 [41] sc.

3RD ROW:  DEC ROW:  Dec 1 sc each side as for back.

Rep dec each side every 2nd row 14 [16] times more.

Then dec each side of next row – 5 sc.  Fasten off.

FINISHING: 
Sew underarm & sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves, matching raglan seams.

COAT BORDER:  
With #6 hk & 2 strands A, beg at lower edge of right front, from right side, work 1 sc in end st of each row on right front edge to beg of neck shaping, cont around neck edge, keep work flat, work to lower edge of left front to correspond to right front.  Fasten off.

2ND ROW:  With 2 strands B, make lp on hk, working from wrong side, work 1 sc in each sc of prev row.

3RD ROW:  Ch 1, turn, work 1 sc in each sc.

Rep 3rd row twice more, end on right side.  Fasten off.

SLEEVE BORDER:  
With #6 hk & 2 strands A, beg at seam, from right side, work 1 row sc on lower edge os sleeve, keep work flat; join with sl st in 1st sc.  Fasten off.

2ND ROW:  With 2 strands B, make lp on hk, from wrong side, work 1 sc in each sc, join with sl st in 1st sc.

3RD ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each sc, join as before.

Rep 3rd row twice more, end on right side.  Fasten off.

BUTTONS:  
With #6 hk & 2 strands B, make lp on hk, work 40 sc over ring, join with sl st in 1st sc.

2ND RND:  From same side as last rnd, ch 1, sk 1st sc, work 1 sc in 2nd sc, * sk next sc, 1 sc in next sc; rep from * around, join with sl st in 1st sc.

3RD RND:  From same side as last rnd, ch 1, work 1 sc in each sc.  Fasten off.

Using strong cotton in matching color, thread double strand in needle & draw thru top of last sc row, gather up tightly & fasten securely, leaving end to sew on button.
