Vintage Sugar & Spice Calot Hat & Bag Duo #1141

Easy to make, flattering to wear & ideal for summer costumes. The ready-made Basket Bag Bottom adds style & shortens time-to-make.

MATERIALS:
Dritz Luxury Belastraw Art 110, 1 each for Calot  & Bag
Dritz Basket Bag Bottom # 264 
Dritz Metal Crochet Hook #2 
Lining Material

GAUGE:
6 sc = 1"

BAG:
* Insert hk thru straw basket ½” down from next point & make 3 sc in point, 4 sc in next point. Rep from * around having multiple of 7 sts around. Join with sl st in 1st sc.

1ST RND: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, sc in 2 sc, * sk next sc, 5 dc in next, sk next sc, sc in 4 sc. Rep from * around, end with sc in last sc.

Mark last st of every rnd.

Hereafter work in back lp only of each st.

2ND RND: * Sk 2 sc, sc in sc, sc in 2 dc, 5 sc in next dc, sc in 2 dc, sc in sc. Rep from * around.

3RD RND: Sk 1 sc, * sc in 4 sc, 3 sc in next, sc in 4 sc, sk 2 sc. Rep from * around end with sc in 4 sc.

4TH RND: * Sk 2 sc, sc in 4 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in 4 sc. Rep from * around. 

5TH TO 13TH RNDS INCL: Rep 4th rnd.

BEADING:
Sc in each sc to center st of next point, * sc in point, ch 6. Rep from * around. Join. Ch 1, turn.

EDGING:
Work in each sc & in each ch st rep 1st rnd.

Then rep 2nd, 3rd & 4th rnds.

Work sl st loosely in each sc. Join & end off.

Line with lining material.

DRAWSTRING [MAKE 2]:
Cut four 2-yd. strands of Belastraw.

Follow How-To directions for Twisted Cord.

CALOT:
Start at open crown ch 56. Join with sl st to form ring

1ST & 2ND RNDS: Work same as 1st & 2nd rnds of Bag.

3RD RND: Sk 1 sc, * sc in 4 sc, 5 sc in next, sc in 4 sc, sk 2 sc. Rep from * around ending with sc in 4 sc.

4TH RND: * Sk 2 sc bet points, sc in each sc to center sc of point, 5 sc in point, sc in each sc to the 2 center sc bet points, Rep from * around.

5TH & 6TH RNDS: Rep 4th rnd.

7TH TO 12TH RNDS INCL: * Sk 2 sc, sc in 8 sc, 3 sc in point, sc in 8 sc. Rep from * around.

13TH & 14TH RNDS: * Sk 2 sc, sc in each sc to the 2 center sc bet next 2 points. Rep from * around.

15TH RND: Sc in each sc around. Ch 1, turn & work sl st loosely in each sc. Join & end off.

TOP PIECE:
With wrong side facing, attach yarn in 1st st of starting chain on open crown, ch 1, * 2 sc in each ch around. Join with sl st in the back lp of 1st sc [112 sc].

1ST TO 4TH RNDS INCL: Work same as 1st to 4th rnds incl of Bag. End off.

“HOW-TO” INSTRUCTIONS:

1. MAKE TWISTED CORD:
Cut strands as directed.
Knot ends & put knotted end over a stationary hk.
Twist strands until they buckle; then double piece & slip other end over hk.
Twist in opposite direction & knot free ends to prevent raveling.
Draw cords in opposite directions through beading. Tie & trim ends.
2. LINE FRAME BAGS:
1ST: Meas inside edge of 1 side of Metal Bag Frame; add 1”. This is width of lining.

2ND: Meas height of crocheted piece, incl ½ of bottom of bag [if there is one]; add 1”. This is length of lining.

3RD: Cut 4 pieces of lining material, follow above meas.

4TH: Cut 2 pieces of crinoline ½” shorter, but same width as lining pieces.

5TH:
 With right sides facing, sew 2 pieces of lining tog along 1 width & 2 height edges, allow ½” for seams.

Sew 2 crinoline pieces in same way.

Slip lining piece inside crinoline piece, turn lining over at top edge & tack [right side of lining is inside].

Sew 3 edges of rem 2 lining pieces. Turn right side out.

Slip crinoline piece inside this piece.

Turn top edge down bet other thicknesses & sew in place.

Top edge of lining should be same meas as inner edge of open frame.

3. LINE DRAWSTRING BAGS:
1ST: Meas ½ of top edge of crocheted bag. This is width of lining.

2ND & 3RD: Same as for Frame Bag.

4TH:  With right sides facing, sew 2 pieces of lining tog along 1 width & 2 height edges, allow ½” for seams.

Sew rem 2 pieces in same way. Turn right side out.

Slip 1st piece inside 2nd piece.

Turn both top edges to inside [bet both thicknesses] & overcast.
