Vintage Sophisticated Charmer Purse #238


Quick & easy to create, this delightful purse will become a season-spanning favorite!

MATERIALS: 
1 large spool Corde
Interchangeable with Soutache, Ribbonette, or Straw
#5 Bone Crochet Hook
Lining Material
2 Handles

ABBREVIATIONS:
BEG                =  Begin                                 
BET                =  Between
CH                  =  Chain                                 
CONT             =  Continue
DC                  =  Double Crochet

BAG:
CENTER SQUARE: 
Ch 3, join with sl st to form ring. 

1ST ROW:  Ch 1, work 6 sc in ring, join with sl st in ch 1.

2ND ROW:  Ch 1, turn.  Taking back loop only, work 1 sc in sl st of prev row, * 3 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st; rep from * twice ending with 1 sc in next st & 1 sc into ch st.

3RD ROW:  Ch 1, turn, work 1 sc into each of first 4 sts, 3 sc in next st [always inc in center st of 3 sc group of prev row], * 1 sc in each of next 3 sc, 3 sc in next st, rep from * once, end with 1 sc in each of next 4 sc & 1 sc in ch 1 [there will always be 2 more sts at end of every row bet incs].

Cont working as described above, inc at each corner, until square measures 7 ¼” across from point to point.  Then work as follows:

SIDES: 
Starting at lower point, ch 4, turn, * work 1 dc in each of next 5 sts, 1 popcorn in next st as follows:  5 dc in one st, remove hook, insert it into first of 5 dc just made, draw loop through; rep from * to corner, 3 dc in center st of corner complete row to top point to correspond.  Ch 2, turn, work 1 sc in 2nd st, taking back loop only, 1 sc in each of rem sts, working 3 sc in center st of side point, omit last dec. 

Continue in same manner, dec 1 st each end on every row & inc on point, working popcorn row every 6th row, until 2 popcorn rows have been made. 

Work 6 rows of sc, fasten off.

Work other side to correspond. 

Make a corresponding piece.

GUSSET: 
Ch 7, work 1 sc in each st.  work back & forth in sc [taking back loop only], until piece is long enough to fit three sides of bag. 

Join gusset to bag with row of sl st.

Fold in gusset at top.

Work 1 row of sc around entire top edge.

Line. 

Insert Handles.

MISS JULIA’S PURSE LINING NOTES:
Make paper patt for each crocheted piece before joinings & lay aside to be used later.

Cut lining according to paper patts & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.

Insert finished lining in bag.  Sew in zipper [if desired].

Note:  Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape of bag extra support.
