Free Pattern - Vintage Multi-Colored Tote Bag #1147

Vintage Multi-Colored Tote Bag #1147
MATERIALS:
Clarks ONT or J & P Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5:
6 balls each of Yellow, Green & Blue
Milwards Steel Crochet Hook #5
Two 12” Ball-End Wooden Rods

GAUGE:
8 sts = 1”
10 rows = 1”

BAG:
Start at top with Blue, ch 125. 

1ST ROW: Sc in 2nd ch from hk & in each ch across [124 sts]. Ch 1, turn. 

2ND & 3RD ROWS: Sc in each st across, ch 1, turn. 

4TH ROW: Sc in each sc across. Drop Blue, attach Yellow, ch 1, turn. 

5TH ROW: With Yellow, work sc in 8 sc, insert hk at base of 9th sc on 1st row, draw lp thru, & compl as for an sc [long sc made]. * Sk sc behind long sc, make sc in next 11 sc, sk 11 sc on 1st row, make long sc at base of next sc on 1st row. Rep from * across, end with 8 sc. Ch 1, turn. 

6TH ROW: Sc in each st across. Drop Yellow, attach Green, ch 1, turn. 

7TH ROW: With Green, work sc in 2 sc, insert hk at base of 3rd sc 4 rows below, & finish as for a long sc, * sk sc behind long sc, make sc in next 11 sc, long sc in next sc 4 rows below. Rep from * across, end with 2 sc. Ch 1, turn. 

8TH & 9TH ROWS: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. 

10TH ROW: Sc in each st across. Drop Green, attach Blue, ch 1, turn. 

11TH ROW: With Blue, work sc in 8 sc, make long sc at base of 9th sc 4 rows below, * sk sc behind long sc, sc in next 11 sc, long sc in next sc 4 rows below. Rep from * across, end with 8 sc. Ch 1, turn. 

12TH ROW: Sc in each st across. Drop Blue, attach Yellow, ch 1, turn. 

13TH, 14TH & 15TH ROWS: With Yellow, rep 7th, 8th & 9th rows. 

16TH ROW: Sc in each st across. Drop Yel­low, attach Green, ch 1, turn. 

17TH ROW: With Green, rep 11th row. 

18TH ROW: Sc in each st across. Drop Green, attach Blue, ch 1, turn. 

19TH, 20TH & 21ST ROWS: With Blue, rep 7th, 8th & 9th rows. 

22ND ROW: Sc in each st across. Drop Blue, attach Yellow, ch 1, turn. 

23RD ROW: With Yellow, rep 11th row. 

24TH ROW: Sc in each st across. Drop Yellow, attach Green, ch 1, turn.

Rep last 18 rows [7th to 24th rows incl] for patt, until piece meas 22” from beg. Fasten off.

HANDLES [MAKE 2]:
Start at one end, with Blue, ch 13. 

1ST ROW: Sc in 2nd ch from hk & in next 11 ch [12 sc]. Ch 1, turn. 

2ND ROW: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn.

Rep 2nd row, change colors as fol­lows:

Work 4 rows Blue, 2 rows Yel­low, 4 rows Green, 2 rows Blue, 4 rows Yellow, 2 rows Green.

Rep these 18 rows until Handle meas 22”. Fasten off.

FINISHING:
Fold crocheted piece in half, to meas 11” x 15½”, seam side to within 3” from top edges.

If desired, line bag with lining material.

With 3 strands of thread [1 strand of each color], work row of sc closely tog over wooden rods.

Gather top edges of bag & sew to ridge of sc-row on rods with over-&-over stitches.

Handle pieces in half lengthwise & sew edges tog.

Sew Handles to bag as shown.

“HOW-TO” INSTRUCTIONS:

1. MAKE TWISTED CORD:
Cut strands as directed.
Knot ends & put knotted end over a stationary hk.
Twist strands until they buckle; then double piece & slip other end over hk.
Twist in opposite direction & knot free ends to prevent raveling.
Draw cords in opposite directions thru beading. Tie & trim ends.
2. LINE FRAME BAGS:
1ST: Meas inside edge of 1 side of Metal Bag Frame; add 1”. This is width of lining.

2ND: Meas height of crocheted piece, incl ½ of bottom of bag [if there is one]; add 1”. This is length of lining.

3RD: Cut 4 pieces of lining material, follow above meas.

4TH: Cut 2 pieces of crinoline ½” shorter, but same width as lining pieces.

5TH:
 With right sides facing, sew 2 pieces of lining tog along 1 width & 2 height edges, allow ½” for seams.

Sew 2 crinoline pieces in same way.

Slip lining piece inside crinoline piece, turn lining over at top edge & tack [right side of lining is inside].

Sew 3 edges of rem 2 lining pieces. Turn right side out.

Slip crinoline piece inside this piece.

Turn top edge down between other thicknesses & sew in place.

Top edge of lining should be same meas as inner edge of open frame.

3. LINE DRAWSTRING BAGS:
1ST: Meas ½ of top edge of crocheted bag. This is width of lining.

2ND & 3RD: Same as for Frame Bag.

4TH:  With right sides facing, sew 2 pieces of lining tog along 1 width & 2 height edges, allow ½” for seams.

Sew rem 2 pieces in same way. Turn right side out.

Slip 1st piece inside 2nd piece.

Turn both top edges to inside [bet both thicknesses] & overcast.
