Free Pattern - 1950s Beach Bag & Slippers Set #1144

Vintage 1950s Beach Bag & Slippers Set #1144
MATERIALS:
J & P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen:
8 balls Red, 4 balls each Blue, Yellow, Pink & Green
Clarks ONT Plastic Crochet Hook #8
16 Metal Rings 1” Diameter
1 Pair Soles
2 yds Round Elastic.

GAUGE:
4 sc = 1”
4 rows = 1”

NOTE:
Use 4 strands thru out.

BAG:
Start at bottom with Red, ch 8”.

1ST ROW: Sc in 2nd ch from hk & in each ch across until piece meas 6”. Cut off rem chain. Ch 1, turn. 

2ND - 8TH ROWS INCL: 2 sc in 1st sc [1 sc inc], sc in each sc across, make 2 sc in last sc [another sc inc]. Ch 1, turn.

Work without inc until piece meas 8”. 

NEXT ROW: Work off 2 sc as 1 sc [1 sc dec], sc in each sc across to within last 2 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc [another sc dec].

NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 sc at beg & end of each row until 7 more rows are com­pl. Break off.

SIDE PIECE:
Start at narrow edge with Pink, ch 8”.

1ST ROW: Sc in 2nd ch from hk & in each ch across until piece meas 6”. Cut off rem chain. Ch 1, turn. 

2ND ROW: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

Rep 2nd row until piece meas 12”. Break off.

Make 3 more pieces same way, have one Blue, one Green & one Yellow.

GUSSET [MAKE 4]:
Start at narrow edge with Red, ch 3½”.

Work as for Side Piece until piece meas 2”.

Compl as for Side Piece.

Sew Side Pieces to wide sides of bottom.

Sew Gusset strips to corners.

Sew up seams.

Attach Red to top & sc closely around.

HANDLE [MAKE 2]:
Start at narrow edge with Red, ch 11. 

1ST ROW: Sc in 2nd ch from hk & in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 

2ND ROW: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

Rep 2nd row until piece meas 22”. Break off.

Sew neatly along edges of long side, stuff with scraps of yarn to make Handle firm.

Sew Handles to Gussets, 3” from top.

Sew metal rings around Bag evenly spaced, 3” from top of Bag.

CORD:
Cut 36 strands of Red, each 2½ yds long.

Twist these strands tightly, then double these strands & give them twist in opposite direction.

Pass Cord thru rings.

BALL [MAKE 2]:
Start at cen­ter with Red, ch 2. 

1ST RND: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hk. 

2ND, 3RD & 4TH RNDS: Inc 3 sc evenly around.

Work without inc until piece meas 1½”.

Dec 3 sc on next 2 rnds.

Stuff firmly with scraps of yarn.

Insert end of Cord in opening.

Sew securely in place.

Cut piece of cardboard to fit bot­tom & place inside Bag.

SLIPPERS:
RIGHT SLIPPER:
TOE PIECE:
Start at bottom with Red, ch 11. 

1ST ROW: Sc in 2nd ch from hk & in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 

2ND - 16TH ROWS INCL: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. 

17TH ROW: Dec 1 sc at beg & end of row. 

18TH - 25TH ROWS INCL: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
Break off at end of 25th row.

Sew Toe Piece in place on sole.

SIDE:
With Red, make chain long enough to reach around remainder of sole. 

1ST ROW: Sc in 2nd ch from hk & in each ch across. Break off Red. 

2ND ROW: Attach Green & sc in each sc across, dec 8 sc evenly across. Break off. 

3RD ROW: Attach Red & rep 2nd row.

Cont work in this manner, have 1 row of Pink, 1 Red, 1 Blue, 1 Red, 1 Yellow & 1 Red.  

Sew Side around sole.

Sew up ends of Side at front.

Cut elastic in half, knot one end & draw thru last sc row, pull elastic to fit.
Knot opposite end.

Make Left Slipper same way.

“HOW-TO” INSTRUCTIONS:

1. MAKE TWISTED CORD:
Cut strands as directed.
Knot ends & put knotted end over a stationary hk.
Twist strands until they buckle; then double piece & slip other end over hk.
Twist in opposite direction & knot free ends to prevent raveling.
Draw cords in opposite directions thru beading. Tie & trim ends.
2. LINE FRAME BAGS:
1ST: Meas inside edge of 1 side of Metal Bag Frame; add 1”. This is width of lining.

2ND: Meas height of crocheted piece, incl ½ of bottom of bag [if there is one]; add 1”. This is length of lining.

3RD: Cut 4 pieces of lining material, follow above meas.

4TH: Cut 2 pieces of crinoline ½” shorter, but same width as lining pieces.

5TH:
 With right sides facing, sew 2 pieces of lining tog along 1 width & 2 height edges, allow ½” for seams.

Sew 2 crinoline pieces in same way.

Slip lining piece inside crinoline piece, turn lining over at top edge & tack [right side of lining is inside].

Sew 3 edges of rem 2 lining pieces. Turn right side out.

Slip crinoline piece inside this piece.

Turn top edge down between other thicknesses & sew in place.

Top edge of lining should be same meas as inner edge of open frame.

3. LINE DRAWSTRING BAGS:
1ST: Meas ½ of top edge of crocheted bag. This is width of lining.

2ND & 3RD: Same as for Frame Bag.

4TH:  With right sides facing, sew 2 pieces of lining tog along 1 width & 2 height edges, allow ½” for seams.

Sew rem 2 pieces in same way. Turn right side out.

Slip 1st piece inside 2nd piece.

Turn both top edges to inside [bet both thicknesses] & overcast.
