Vintage Miss New England Doll #564

Quick & easy to crochet this lovely doll…northern charm with a matching hat, umbrella, & panties…a beautiful favorite to keep or gift to that special person!

MATERIALS: 

J & P Coats Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet, size 30, 4 balls of blue & 1 ball of white                                                 

#9 Steel Crochet Hook

1 Doll, 8” with 4 ½” chest                           

Pipe Cleaner

Narrow Velvet Ribbon

GAUGE: 

4 loops = 1”;    

6 loop rows = 1”

ABBREVIATIONS:

UNDERSKIRT:

Start at waist with blue, ch 38 loosely to reach around doll’s waist.  Sl st in first ch.

1^ST RND:  Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 3, sc in next ch.  Rep from * around, end with ch 1, dc in first sc.

2^ND RND:  * Ch 3, in next lp make sc, ch 3 & sc.  Rep from * around, end with ch 1, dc in dc.

3^RD RND:  Rep 2^nd rnd.

4^TH RND:  * [Ch 3, sc in next lp] 4 times; ch 3, in next lp make [sc, ch 3] twice [1 lp inc].  Rep from * around, end with ch 1, dc in dc.

5^TH RND:  * Ch 3, sc in next lp.  Rep from * around, end with ch 1, dc in dc. 

Rep 5^th rnd until piece meas 5 ¾”.  Join & break off.

Attach white to first lp, ch 3, 4 dc in same lp, drop lp from hk, insert hk thru 3^rd ch of ch-3, draw dropped lp thru [popcorn st made], * ch 2, 5 dc in next lp, drop lp from hk, insert hk thru first dc, draw dropped lp thru [another pc st made].  Rep from * around, end with ch 2, sl st in first pc st.  Break off.

Attach blue to any ch-2 sp & work ruffle as follows:

1^ST RND:  Sc in same sp, ch 3, sc in same sp, * ch 3, in next sp make sc, ch 3 & sc.  Rep from * around, end with ch 1, dc in first sc.

2^ND RND:  * Ch 3, sc in next lp.  Rep from * around, end with ch 1, dc in dc. 

Rep last rnd until piece meas 1” in all.  Join & break off.

UPPER SKIRT: 

Work as for Underskirt until piece meas 4 ¾”. 

Break off blue, attach white & work pc st patt as for Underskirt. 

Break off white, attach blue & work ruffle as for Underskirt.

BODICE: 

1^ST ROW:  Place Upper Skirt  on top of Under Skirt &, work thru both thicknesses, attach blue to first ch of starting ch, ch 4, sk next ch, dc in next ch, * ch 1, sk next ch, dc in next ch.  Rep from * across, end with ch 1, dc in next ch.  Ch 1, turn.

2^ND ROW:  Sc in first dc, * sc in next sp, sc in next dc.  Rep from * across, end with sc in top of starting ch.  Ch 1, turn.

3^RD ROW:  Sc in each sc, inc 8 sc evenly across [to inc 1 sc, make 2 sc in 1 sc.]  ch 1, turn.

4^TH ROW:  Sc in each sc across.  Ch 1, turn.

5^TH ROW:  Rep 3^rd row.

6^TH THRU 9^TH ROWS:  Rep 4th row.

10^TH ROW:  Sc in each of next 11 sc.  Ch 1, turn. 

Work in patt for right side of Back for 4 more rows.  Break off. 

Attach thread to last sc of Bodice & work left side of Back to match with right side of Back. 

With wrong side of work facing, work Front as follows: 

1^ST ROW:  Attach thread to 7^th free sc of Bodice, sc in same sc, sc in each of next 20 sc.  Ch 1, turn.

Work in patt over these 21 sts only for 6 more rows.

NEXT ROW:  Sc in each of next 9 sc, sl st across next 3 sc [for neck], sc in each of next 9 sc.  Ch 1, turn.

TO SHAPE NECK: 

1^ST ROW:  Sc in each sc across to within last 2 sc.  Work off last 2 sc as 1 sc [1 sc dec].  Ch 1, turn.

2^ND ROW:  Dec 1 sc, sc in each sc across.  Ch 1, turn.

3^RD, 4^TH & 5^TH ROWS:  Sc in each sc across.  Ch 1, turn.  Break off. 

Attach thread to opposite side of neck & complete other side to match. 

Sew up shoulder seams.

SLEEVE: 

1^ST RND:  Attach thread at base of armhole & sc closely around.  Join.

2^ND RND:  Dec 2 sc, sc in each sc around, inc 6 sc evenly across top of sleeve & dec 2 sts at end of rnd.  Join. 

Now sc in each sc around until Sleeve meas 1”.

NEXT RND:  Ch 4, * sk 1 sc, dc in next sc, ch 1.  Rep from * around.  Join & break off. 

Work other Sleeve to match.

NECK RUFFLE: 

1^ST ROW:  Attach white to back of neck, * ch 3, sc in next st.  Rep from * across.  Ch 3, turn.

2^ND ROW:  In each lp across make [sc, ch 3] twice.  Ch 4, turn.

3^RD ROW:  Sc in 3^rd ch from hk [picot made], ch 1, sc in next lp, * ch 1, picot, ch 1, sc in next lp.  Rep from * across.  Break off.

SLEEVE RUFFLE: 

1^ST ROW:  Attach white to any sp on Sleeve & in each sp around make [sc, ch 3] twice.  Join.

2^ND RND:  Sl st in first lp; in each lp around make [sc, ch 3] twice.  Join.

3^RD RND:  Sl st in first lp & work as for 3^rd row of Neck Ruffle.

Work other Sleeve Ruffle in same way.

Attach blue to back opening & sc closely across both sides.  Ch 1, turn. 

Sc in each sc across.  Break off.

Sew snap fasteners to back opening. 

Cut 2 pieces of ribbon, each 3” long & lace piece thru sps on each Sleeve. 

Tie into bow. 

Cut another piece, 40” long & lace thru sps at waist.

UMBRELLA: 

Start at bottom with white, ch 6.  Join with sl st to form ring.

1^ST RND:  Ch 3, 9 dc in ring.  Join.

2^ND & 3^RD RNDS:  Ch 3, dc in each dc around.  Join.

4^TH RND:  Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, 2 dc in each dc around.  Join.

5^TH RND:  Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 3, sc in next dc.  Rep from * around, end with ch 1, dc in first sc [20 lps].

6^TH RND:  * Ch 3, sc in next lp.  Rep from * around.  Join.

7^TH RND:  Work in patt, inc 10 lps evenly around.

8^TH THRU 11 RNDS:  Rep last 2 rnds 2 more times [60 lps].

12^TH RND:  Rep 6^th rnd.

13^TH RND:  * Ch 1, picot, ch 1, sc in next lp.  Rep from * around.  Join & break off.

HAT: 

1^ST RND:  Ch 4, 13 dc in 4^th ch from hk, join.

2^ND RND:  Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 3, sc in next dc.  Rep from * around.  Join.

3^RD & 4^TH RNDS:  * Sc in next lp, ch 3.  Rep from * around.  Join.

5^TH RND:  2 Sc in each lp around.  Join. 

6^TH & 7^TH RNDS:  Sc in each sc around.  Join.

8^TH, 9^TH & 10^TH RNDS:  Rep 2^nd, 3^rd & 4^th rnds.

11^TH RND:  Sl st in next lp, ch 3, 2 dc in same lp, 3 dc in each lp around.  Join.

12^TH RND:  Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 3, sk next dc, sc in next dc.  Rep from * around.  Join & break off.

Starch hat, dress & umbrella lightly & press.

Sew feather to hat. 

Tie rem ribbon into bow & sew to back of hat.

Slip umbrella over pip cleaner & sew securely into place, catching picots to form ribs. 

Loop one end of pipe cleaner to form handle.

PANTIES: 

With white & #6 hk, ch 38 loosely to fit around waistline, dc in 4^th st from hk, 1 dc in each rem st of ch, ch 3, turn.

2^ND ROW:  1 Dc in each of next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc, * 1 dc in each of next 5 dc, 2 dc in next dc, rep from * across row, end with 1 dc in last st, join in 3^rd st of 1^st ch 3.

3^RD & 4^TH ROWS:  Ch 3 [counts as 1 dc], 1 dc in each dc, join in 3^rd st of ch.

5^TH ROW:  Ch 3, 1 dc in each of next 10 dc, sk 21 dc, 1 dc in each of next 10 dc, join.

6^TH ROW:  * Ch 3, sc in next st, rep from * all around, cut thread. 

Attach thread at crotch & finish other leg in same manner. 

Work row of sc around top of panties, working loosely, then work row of sc around side opening, cut thread. 

Tie with ribbon on side.

If desired, make an underskirt of crinoline [net] & taffeta.
