Vintage Infant’s Striped Sweater & Cap Set #B196

SIZE:
Directions are for 6 month size.
Changes for 1 year size are in parentheses.

MATERIALS
Nomotta Non-Shrink, Mothproof Baby Wool
or
Nylon, 1 Oz Balls: 3 White; 2 Contrasting Color (CC)
Plastic Crochet Hook #3
4 Small Pearl Buttons

GAUGE:
6½ sc = 1”
6 rows = 1”
6½ hdc = 1”
4 rows = 1”

NOTE:
JACKET is worked from side to side.

THERE are 4 rows of White & 2 rows of CC.
CARRY color not in use loosely along edge.

PATTERN STITCH FOR YOKE:
WORK in single crochet (sc) going into back lp only.

PATTERN STITCH FOR BODY:
WORK in Half Double Cro­chet (hdc) going into hack lp only.

JACKET:
RIGHT FRONT:

1ST ROW: With White, ch 58 (62).
START at neck edge, work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hk, 1 sc in each of next 19 (21) chs (YOKE), 1 hdc in each of rem 37 (39) chs (BODY). Ch 2, turn. 
2ND ROW: Work 1 hdc in each of next 37 (39) sts, 1 sc in each of next 20 (22) sts. Ch 1, turn.


REPEAT these 2 rows, work 4 rows of White & 2 rows of CC until there are 4 (5) stripes of each color, end at neck edge. Break yarn.

ATTACH White on 21st (23rd) st from neck edge (BEG OF BODY) & work 4 (6) rows across 

SHAPE ARMHOLE: 
Body-sts only, end at armhole edge.

PLACE marker in center of last stripe to indicate right underarm edge. Do not break yarn.

BACK:
WITH White (CC), ch 21 (23) for BACK ARMHOLE.

WITH CC (White), work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hk & in each of rem 19 (21) chs.

WORK across body sts & cont in striped patt until there are 7(8) White stripes & 8 (7) CC stripes.

LEFT ARMHOLE & LEFT FRONT:
WORK to corres with Right Armhole & Right Front.

WITH White, ch 40 (44).

START at underarm seam, work 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hk & in each of next 27 (29) chs, then work 1 sc in each of rem 10 (12) chs for CUFF. Ch 1, turn.

START at underarm seam, work 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hk & in each of next 27 (29) chs, then work 1 sc in each of rem 10 (12) chs for CUFF. Ch 1, turn.

WORK in striped patt, keep the 10 (12) cuff sts in sc & rem part of sleeve in hdc inc 1 st at end of every hdc row (6) times for SLEEVE CAP; there should be 2 White stripes & 1 (2) CC stripes.

WORK straight until there are 3 (4) White stripes & 3 (4) CC stripes.

WORK other half of sleeve to corre­, dec 1 st at same edge as incd, end with White stripe. Break yarn.

FINISHING:
PRESS lightly.

JOIN shoul­ders across 2 White & 2 CC stripes, leave rem stripes of each color for neck, sew seams.

WORK 1 row of sc around neck & along front edges work 4 BUTTONLOOPS on right front as follows: *Ch 2, sk 2 sts, 1 sc in each of next 3 sts; rep from * 3 times more.

CAP:
WITH White, ch 29 (31).

START at top edge of back seam, work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hk & in each of next 7(8) chs (top section), work 1 hdc in each of rem 20 (21) chs.

WORK in striped patt same as for jacket until there are 5 (7) rows, end with hdc section.

EARLAP:
CH 10, work 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hk & in each of next 7 chs, cont in patt across row.

COMPLETE White (CC) stripe & work 1 more CC (White) stripe (this completes one EARLAP).

LEAVE earlap sts free, cont to work across cap work 4 White stripes & 3 (4) CC stripes (front).

WORK 2nd earlap to corres with 1st earlap.

WORK rem of back section to corres with 1st sec­tion, then 1 more CC stripe.

FINISHING:
SEW back seam.

GATHER top of crown & lower edge of each earlap firmly, round out edge of earlap. 

CHIN STRAP:
WITH White, ch 20.

WORK 1 sc in 2nd ch from hk & in each of the next 10 chs, sk 2 chs, 1 sc in each of next 3 chs (buttonhole), sk 2 chs, 1 sc in last ch (2nd buttonhole).

WORK on other side of foundation ch, work 1 sc in each ch & 2 sc in each (ch-2) sp. Break yarn.

SEW to end of one earlap. 

POMPOM: 
WIND both color yarns around 2 fingers about 40 times.

SLIP yarn off fingers & tie tightly around center.

TRIM into ball & attach.
