Vintage Flower Pillbox Hat & Bag Duo #1133

MATERIALS:
Coats & Clarks Ont Speed-Cro-Sheen Mercerized Cotton,
6 balls #1
Milwards Steel Crochet Hook #1/0
⅝ yd white felt, 36” wide

GAUGE:
Motif measures 2¼” in diameter


HAT:
TOP:
1ST MOTIF:
Start at center, ch 2. 

1ST RND: Make 8 sc in 2nd ch from hk. Join With sl st to 1st sc. 

2ND RND: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around. Join to 1st sc = 16 sc. 

3RD RND: Ch 1, sc in join, [ch 3, sk next sc, sc in next sc] 7 times; ch 1, hdc in 1st sc to form last lp. 

4TH RND: Ch 1, sc in lp just formed, ch 5, pc [popcorn stitch = 4 dc in 1st sc made on last rnd, drop lp off hk, insert hk in 1st dc of 4-dc group & draw dropped lp thru, ch 1 to fasten]; [sc in next lp, ch 5, pc st in next sc] 7 times. Join to 1st sc. Break off & fasten.

2ND MOTIF:
Work as for 1st Motif until 3rd rnd has been completed. 

4TH RND: Ch 1, sc in lp just formed, ch 5, pc st in 1st sc made on last rnd, sc in next lp, ch 2, sl st in any lp on 1st Motif, ch 2, pc st in next sc on 2nd Motif, sc in next lp on 2nd Motif, ch 2, sl st in next lp on 1st Motif, ch 2, pc st in next sc on 2nd Motif; work on 2nd Motif only, [sc in next lp, ch 5, pc st in next sc] 5 times. Join to 1st sc. Break off & fasten.

Make 4 more motifs, join motifs as 2nd Motif was joined to 1st Motif to form circle, leave 1 lp free bet join on inner edge & 3 lps free on outer edge & join last motif to 1st motif.

FILL-IN MOTIF:
Start at center, ch 2. 

Hereafter do not join rnds, but carry colored thread up bet 1st & last st of each rnd to indicate beg of rnd.

1ST RND: Make 8 sc in 2nd ch from hk. 

2ND RND: 2 sc in each sc around = 16 sc. 

3RD RND: * 2 sc in next sc—1 sc inc; sc in next sc. Rep from * around = 24 sc. 

4TH RND: Sc in each sc around, inc 8 sc evenly spaced. 

5TH RND: Sc in each sc around, inc 4 sc evenly spaced = 36 sc.

Now join Fill-in Motif to inside of motif-circle as follows: 

6TH RND: Sc in 1st sc, sl st in any lp on circle, * sc in next sc on Fill-in Motif, hdc in next sc, 2 dc in next sc, sl st in next join bet motifs on circle, 2 dc in next sc on Fill-in Motif, hdc in next sc, sc in next sc, sl st in next lp on circle. Re­p from * around, end with hdc. Join to 1st sc. Break off & fasten.

Work around outer edge as follows:
Attach thread to free ch-5 lp preceding any joining bet motifs.

1ST RND: Make 3 sc in same lp, * 2 dtr in next sc, joint dtr [joint double triple crochet - hold back on hk last lp of each dtr, dtr in last sc used, sk join bet motifs, dtr in next sc, yo & draw thru all lps on hk]; 2 dtr in last sc used, [3 sc in next ch-5 lp, ch 2] twice; 3 sc in next lp. Rep from * around, end­ with ch 2. Join to 1st sc. 

2ND RND: Ch 1, * sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next dtr, sc in next joint dtr, 2 sc in next dtr, sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next sp, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sp. Rep from * around. Join. Turn. 

3RD RND: Sl st in each sc around. Join. Turn.

SIDE:
1ST RND
: Sc in each sl st around. Join. 

2ND RND: Sl st in each sc around, drop lp off hk, insert hk from back to front in last sc used & draw dropped lp thru to join rnd. 

3RD RND: Sc in each sc of next-to-last rnd. Join.

Rep last 2 rnds alternately until side meas 2¼”, end with sl st rnd. 

NEXT RND: Work as for 3rd rnd, dec 6 sc evenly spaced [to dec 1 sc = draw up lp in each of 2 sc, yo & draw thru all lps on hk].

NEXT 3 RNDS: Sc in each sc around. Join.

At end of last rnd, break off & fasten.

Turn last 4 rnds under for hatband & sew in place.

BAG:
SIDE [MAKE 2]:
Work as for Top of Hat until 1st rnd at outer edge of top has been completed. 

2ND RND: Ch 1, sc in 1st 4 sts, * 2 sc in each of next 3 sts, sc in next 4 sts, (2 sc in next sp, sc in next 3 sc) twice; sc in next dtr. Rep from * around, end with 2 sc in last sp. Join. 

3RD RND: Rep 2nd rnd of Side of Hat. 

4TH RND: Sc in each sc of next-to-last rnd, inc 6 sc evenly spaced. Join.

Re­p 3rd & 4th rnds alternately until 5 sl st rnds in all have been made. Break off & fasten.

GUSSET & HANDLE:
Start at narrow edge, ch 12. 

1ST ROW: Sc in 2nd ch from hk & in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 

2ND ROW: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

Rep 2nd row until total length is 33”. Break off & fasten.

FINISHING:
Cut felt for lining slightly smaller than each piece & sew neatly in place on wrong side.

Sew narrow ends of gusset tog. 

JOIN GUSSET & SIDES:
With wrong sides tog, pin sides to gusset, have gusset seam at bottom of bag & leave 6” of sides free at top.

Use Speed-Cro-Sheen & sew gusset to sides.
