Vintage Circle Crochet Purse #512

A clever woman quickly & very easily crochets this charming Purse in a delightful pattern, a season-spanning, wardrobe favorite!

MATERIALS:
Chadwick’s Red Heart Knitting Worsted 1 oz, 4 balls Navy
Coats & Clark’s ONT Pearl Cotton, size 5, 4 balls Ecru
#7 Bone Crochet Hook
1/3 yd Felt for lining
Strip of Buckram, 1 ½” x 36”
15” Zipper

Use 1 strand of Knitting worsted; & use 4 threads of Pearl Cotton.

STITCHES:

INC      =          Increase
LP        =          Loop                             
MEAS =            Measure
REP     =          Repeat                          
RND     =          Round
SC       =          Single Crochet               
SK        =          Skip
SL ST =           Slip Stitch                     
ST        =          Stitch   
YO       =          Yarn Over

SIDE:  [MAKE 2]:  
Starting at center with yarn, ch 2.

1ST RND:  6 Sc in 2nd ch from hook, join with sl st.

2ND RND:  Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around, join.

3RD RND:  Ch 1, * sc in next sc, sc in base of next sc [long sc made], 3 sc in next sc [ 2 sc inc], long sc in next sc.  Rep from * around, join.

To keep continuity of pattern when inc 2 sc, always make 3 sc bet 2 long sc.

4TH RND:  Ch 1, * long sc in next sc, sc in next long sc.  Rep from * around, inc 2 sc 3 times in all at equal distances apart [6 sc inc], join.

5TH RND:  Ch 1, * sc in next long sc, long sc in next sc.  Rep from * around, inc 6 sc as before, but do not have incs fall over those of previous rnd.  Drop yarn.

6TH RND:  Insert hook in next sc & draw 4 strands of Pearl Cotton thru & rep 4th rnd. 

Change to yarn in same manner as pearl Cotton was changed.

7TH THRU 10TH RNDS:  Using yarn, rep 4th & 5th rnds alternately, join each rnd.

11TH THRU 20TH RNDS:  Rep 6th thru 10th rnds twice.

GUSSET:  
21ST RND:  Ch 1, sc in back lp of each st around, join.

22ND RND:  Ch 1, sc in each sc around, join & break off.

HANDLE:  
With yarn, make ch about 25” long.

1ST RND:  5 Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, 5 sc in last ch; then, work along opposite side of starting ch, make sc in each ch across, join.

2ND RND:  Sc in each sc around, inc at curved ends to keep work flat.  Drop yarn & change to Pearl Cotton.

3RD RND:  Ch 1, * sc in next sc, long sc in next sc.  Rep from * around.  Break off Pearl Cotton.

4TH RND:  With yarn, * make long sc in next sc, sc in next long sc.  Rep from * around, join & break off.

TAB:  
With yarn, ch 7 & make sc in 2nd ch from hook & in each ch across, 5 sc in last ch; then, work along opposite side of starting ch, make sc in each ch across.  Join &  break off.

FINISHING:  
Using crocheted Side & Gusset pieces as patterns, cut out lining for bag from felt.  Sew lining tog.

With 4 strands of Pearl Cotton, sew edges of 2 Gussets tog, leave 15” opening for zipper.

Overcast opening with Pearl Cotton.

Line bag, use cardboard [or heavy plastic] to stiffen sides & buckram for Gusset.

Sew zipper across opening.

Sew Tab to zipper pull.

Sew Handle to bag.
