Vintage Bat Wing Sweater #545

Quick & easy to crochet this charming sweater with trendy bat wings…smart & stylish lines…a season-spanning wardrobe favorite!

SIZES:  12, 14 & 16.  
Directions are given for size 12, with changes for sizes 14 & 16 in brackets.

MATERIALS: 
12 [13, 14] skeins Gem Hat & Bag Yarn or
12 [13, 14] skeins Dawn Bulky Yarn
#13 Wooden Crochet Hook
#G Aluminum Crochet Hook
4 Pearl buttons 1 ¼”

GAUGE: 
#13 Hook:  3 ½ sts = 1”;     6 ridges = 2”
#G Hook:  5 sts = 1”

SC    =       Single Crochet
SK    =       Skip                               
SL ST=      Slip Stitch

1ST ROW:  With #13 hook, ch 27 [29, 31], sl st in 2nd st from hook, 1 sl st in each rem st of ch, 27 [29, 31] sts [turning ch is always counted as 1 st], ch 1 to turn all rows.

2ND ROW:  1 Sl st in each sl st & in ch 1 at end of row [an inc].  

Rep last row always inc 1 st in each row until there are 83 [85, 87] sts, counting turning ch as st, cut yarn, turn.  

With #G hook ch 10, with #13 hook ch 14 [15, 16], then work across 83 [85, 87] sts, ch 14 [15, 16], change to #G hook & ch 11.

NEXT ROW:  Sl st in 2nd st from hook, sl st in each of next 9 sts [10 sts for ribbing], change to #13 hook & sl st in each of next 111 [115, 119] sts, change to #G hook & sl st in each of next 10 sts [ribbing]. 

All ribbing is worked with #G hook & will not be referred to again.

Cont working even [to work even, do not work in turning ch] until waistband meas 5 [5 ¼”, 5 ½”] on each side, finishing what will be back edge.

NEXT ROW:  Work next 61 [63, 66] sts including waistband, ch 1, turn & work back to lower edge.

* NEXT ROW:  Work to within 2 sts of last row, turn, do not ch 1, then work back to lower edge.  Rep from * once. 

Work even until waistband meas 7 ½” [7 3/8”, 8”] ending at back edge.

NEXT ROW:  Sl st in each st, ch 3, turn.

NEXT ROW:  Sl st in 2nd st from hook, sl st in next st of ch, sl st in each rem sl st. 

Rep last 2 rows once.

NEXT ROW:  Sl st in each st, ch 71 [73, 74], working last 11 sts of ch with #G hook, turn.

NEXT ROW:  Sl st in 2nd st from hook, sl st in each rem st of ch, sl st in each sl st.

NEXT ROW:  Sl st in each st.  

Cont to work even until this side correspond to opposite side, cut yarn, turn.

NEXT ROW:  Sk 23 [24, 25] sl sts, attach yarn in next st, then work 1 sl st in each of next 83 [85, 87] sts, leave next 24 [25, 26] sts for underarm sea, ch 1, turn.

NEXT ROW:  Dec 1 st at beg of row [to dec, sk 1 st & do not work in turning ch].

Rep last row until there are 27 [29, 31] sts, cut yarn.

Sew side & sleeve seams.

NECK & FRONT BAND:  
With right side of work toward you, attach yarn at lower edge of front, & work 1 sl st in each st to short row at back of neck, * 1 sl st in short row, 1 sl st in dec row, rep from * once, sl st in each ridge across back of neck, * sl st in next dec row, sl st in next row, rep from * once, sl st in each st on opposite side [there will be variation in appearance of patt where band & fronts are joined, but this cannot be avoided].

Work even until front ribbing meas 6” [6 ½”, 7”], ending at right front edge.

NEXT ROW:  1 Sl st ion each of first 2 sts, ch 5, sk 5 sts, sl st in next st, * work in sl st for 2 ¼”, ch 3, sk 3 sts, sl st in next st, rep from * twice, then sl st in each rem st.

Work even in sl sts until ribbing meas 7” [7 ½”, 8”], cut yarn.

Sew buttons in position.
