Vintage Baby’s Dress 3-Piece Set #B212

Dress, panties & booties set crocheted in sizes 3 months & 6 months.This charming set is made in the unusual pineapple stitch, which is quick & fun to do once you’ve mastered the fundamentals.

SIZE:
Directions are for size 3 months. Changes for size 6 months are in brackets. Chest measurements are about 18” [20”].

MATERIALS:
Baby OR Fingering Yarn, 3 Ply: 3 oz Main Color [MC]; 1 oz Contrast Color [CC]
1 Crochet Hook #3 [Canada #1 ½]
Spool Elastic Thread
4 Small Pearl Buttons
2 yds Satin Ribbon ¼” Wide in CC

GAUGE/TENSION:
7 Pineapple Stitches = 2”
6 Rows = 2”

PINEAPPLE STITCH DIRECTIONS:
NOTE: Stitch is abbreviated PS thru out pattern.
To learn st & test gauge, CH 12 VERY loosely. If you work tightly, use hook a size or 2 larger for starting chain.

1ST ROW: 1ST STEP: YO, insert hk in 4th CH from hk [3 lps on hk]; hk under yarn & pull thru 1 lp pulling yarn up to about ½” long [3 lps now on hk].  Insert hk in net CH st [4 lps on hk], hk under yarn & pull thru 1 lpp, pulling yarn up to about ½” [4 lps now on hk].  YO & pull thru all 4 lps on hk [1 lp rems], CH 1 [ 1 PS has now been completed].

2ND STEP: YO, insert hk in SAME st of CH as just used [3 lps on hk].  Hk under yarn & pull thru 1 lp [draw up ½” high], [3 lps now on hk], insert hk in next st of CH [4 lps on hk], hk under yarn & pull thru 1 lp [draw up ½” high] [4 lps on hk], YO, pull thru all 4 lps [1 lp rems], CH 1.  Rep 2nd Step for balance of row, end DC in last CH. Cut yrn, pull end thru st.

NOTE: In pineapple stitch yarn is broken at end of each row, unless garment is worked joined in rnds.  New rows start back at beg of 1st row.

2ND ROW: Start new row at beg of last row. Join yarn in top of CH 3 of prev row, CH 3, YO, insert hk in sp bet CH 3 & 1st PS of prev row, & pull up ½” lp [3 lps on hk, insert hk in sp bet 1st & 2nd PS of prev row, & pull up ½” lp [4 lps on hk], YO & pull thru all 4 lps on hk, CH 1.  Cont making PS, drawing up lp 1st in same sp, then 1 sp beyond, for each st.  End, DC in last sp. Cut yarn, pull end thru st. 

Cont to work all following rows, same as 2nd Row.

For test swatch, work total of 6 rows. 

Meas to check gauge. If different than that specified, change your hk size and/or adjust height of lps.

DRESS:
YOKE:
With MC yarn, CH 51 [57] VERY loosely.

1ST ROW: Start in 4th CH from hk, work 7 [7] PS [for RIGHT BACK], 2 DC in next CH st, 6[7] PS [for RIGHT SLEEVE], 2 DC in next CH st, 12 [16] PS [ for FRONT], 2 DC in next CH st, 6 [7] PS [for LEFT SLEEVE], 2 DC in next CH st, 7 [7] [for LEFT BACK], end with DC in last CH st. Break yarn, pull thru lp on hk.

2ND ROW: Start at beg of last row, join yarn in top of CH 3 of prev row; CH 3, work 8 [8] PS [as explained in 2nd Row of Pineapple Stitch directions above], 2 DC in sp bet 2 DC of row below, 8 [9] PS, 2 DC in sp bet 2 DC of row below, 14 [18] PS, 2 DC as before, 8 [9] PS, 2 DC, 8 [8] PS, end with DC in DC of row below.  Break off yarn.

[NOTE that in each 2 DC corner sp you will now be working last st of PS, 2 DC, & 1st st of PS, all in same sp.]

Cont inc in this way until 7 [8] rows are made.

This compls YOKE. With yarn needle, fasten in all loose ends.

FINISH BACK OPENING:
On LEFT BACK, join yarn at waist edge of opening.

1ST ROW: Work 1 rw SC, CH 1, turn.

2ND ROW: 2 SC, CH 2, sk next 2 SC, 2 SC, CH 2, sk next 2 SC, SC across rest of row, CH 1, turn.

3RD ROW: SC in each SC to 1st CH sp, work 2 SC in CH, SC in next 2 SCs, 2 SC in next CH, 2 SC. Break yarn, finish off.

You now have made buttonhole overlap. For button underlap, on RIGHT BACK opening, join yarn at neck edge & work 3 rows SC along edge. Finish off.

Directions are now different for 3 month & 6 month sizes.. 

Follow directions for specific size below:

SKIRT:
3-MONTH SIZE ONLY: RIBBON BEADING:
Lap 3 SC rows of LEFT BACK opening over those of RIGHT BACK. Join yarn thru 1st SC row of LEFT SIDE & last row of RIGHT SIDE, & CH 3; work thru both layers of overlap, work DC in each bottom st of next 2 SC rows; work DC in each PS & each sp bet PS to within 5 PS of corner sp; work DC in rem 5 PS [not in sps];; join underarm by working 1 DC thru center ofn2 DC sp of right back sleeve opening, & center of 2 DC sp of FRONT section; work DC in each PS & each sp across FRONT to within 5 PS of corner, work DC in last 5 PS [not sps], join corner at underarm as before, work DC in each PS & each sp across 

LEFT BACK, at end of row join with sl st to starting CH 3. 

You should now have about 106 DC.

DO NOT BREAK YARN, work in rnds from here on.

1ST RND: CH 3, work PS in each DC around, join.

2ND RND: CH 3, work PS in each PS around, join.

Rep 2ND RND 13 times. Fasten off.

SHELL BORDER:
With CC yarn, join at center back of skirt edge. * Work shell of 5 DC in sp, bet next 2 PS, sk 2 PS, SC in next sp, sk next 2 PS; rep from * around, join, fasten off.

With MC, join at center back & work loose row of SC around border. Fasten off.

6-MONTH SIZE ONLY: RIBBON BEADING:
Lap 3 SC rows of left back opening over those of right back.

Join yarn thru 1st SC row of left side & last row of right side, & CH 3; work thru both layers of overlap, work DC in bottom st of each of next 2 SC rows; work DC in each PS to corner sp; join underarm by working 1 DC thru center of 2 DC sp of right back sleeve opening, & center of 2 DC sp of front section; work DC in each PS across front to corner, join as before, work DC in each PS across back section, at end of row join with sl st to starting CH.

You should now have about 70 DC.

DO NOT BREAK YARN, work in rnds from now on.

1ST RND: CH 3, work PS in each DC around, join.

2ND RND: CH 3, work PS in each PS around, join.

Rep 2ND RND 18 times, inc 1 st each side on rows 6, 9, 12, 14, 16, 18 & 20 [to inc, work 1 DC bet 2 PS]. Fasten off.

SHELL BORDER:
With CC yarn, work 1 row of SC around entire bottom of skirt, loosely. Join. * sk 1, SC in next st, sk 2, shell of 5 DC in next st. Rep from * around.

With MC, work 1 row of SC loosely around border. Fasten off

SLEEVES:
FOR BOTH SIZES:
Join MC AT UNDER ARM & WORK 19 [22] PS around sleeve opening, join..

Work 5 [5] more rnds PS even.

Work 1 rnd SC, work SCs in sps bet PS.

FOR 6-MONTH SIZE ONLY:
Work 2 more rnds SC.

Work 2nd sleeve same way.

SHELL BORDER:
With CC, join at underarm * shell of 5 DC in next sp, SC in next sp, rep from * around.

Rep for 2nd sleeve.

With MC, work 1 row SC around border, as for hem.

NECKLINE FINISHING:
Join CC at buttonhole edge of neckline, work 9 shells around neck, as for sleeve border, finish with row of SC in MC.

TRIM:
Cut satin ribbon in half. With 2 pieces tog, start at center front, weave thru beading

Tie bow, & trim ends.

For yarn rosettes [shown in 3-month size photo], with CC, wrap yarn 10 times around tip of forefinger. Tie tightly with yarn thru center. Spread loops out, & tack to dress as desired.

PANTIES:
With MC, CH 90 [115] very loosely, join to form circle.

Work 63 [63] PS around chain, but in making PS, have 1 CH bet center of each PS.

Work 16 [17] rnds in PS, for six-month size only inc 1 st each side on rnds 3, 4, 5, & 9.

You should now have 63 [71] PS.

CROTCH:
Short rows for crotch shaping will be worked back & forth from right side, break yarn at end of each row.

1ST ROW: Join in top of 3rd [10th] PS from beg of last rnd. Work 26 [16] PS, end DC in same sp. Break yarn.

2ND ROW: Start in 3rd [3rd] st from beg of last row. Work 20 [12] PS, end DC in same sp. Break yarn.

3RD ROW: Start in 3rd [2nd] st from beg 7 work 14 [10] PS.

4TH ROW: [3-month size only]: Start 1 st from beg, work 12 PS.

Work opp side same as above.

Turn wrong side out & close crotch with 1 row SC.

SHELL BORDER:
With CC, work SC around leg openings.

Make shells as for skirt border, work 7 [8] shells around each opening.

WAISTBAND:
With CC, join yarn at waist, work about 94 [110] DC around. Join, fasten off.

Run elastic thread thru top & bottom of Dc sts.

RUFFLES:
Hold pantie with waistband at bottom. Ruffle is worked across back only.

Join CC yarn at side of 9th [8th] row of PS, work 3 [2] DC in each sp bet PS across, end at other side of back section.  Fasten off.

Work similar row of ruffle in 11th [10th] row of PS.

With MC, work 1 row of SC loosely around free edge of rufle.

Make 1 rosette & st in place below ruffles.

BOOTIES:
SOLE:
With MC, CH 19 [22] loosely.

1ST RND: Start in 2nd CH from hk, work 9 [11] SC, 8 [9] DC, 6 DC in end st, then work along other side of CH same way: 8 [9] DC, 9 [11] SC, join.

2ND RND: CH 3, 2 DC in each of next 2 sts, DC around to [6 DC] cluster [for toe], work 2 DC in each of 6 DC, then DC around to last st, 2 DC in this, join.

3RD RND: CH 3, 2 DC, 1 DC, 2 DC, then DC around to toe, 2 DC, 1 DC [6 times], DC around to heel, 2 DC, 1 DC, & join. Fasten off.

Make 4 of these for double soles.

SIDE:
Place 2 soles back to back & with MC, work DC around entire edge, pick up 2 inside lps, 1 on each sole. Join.

Work 5 [7] rnds of SC. Fasten off.

INSTEP:
With CC, work 8 [9] SC across toe.

Work 11 [13] more rows SC, join end of each row to side with sl st, turn, work another sl st to start next row.

CUFF:
Cont with CC, SC around sides & across instep, join, work SC in rnds for 15 [17] rows. Fasten off.

With MC, SC around outer edge of sole & join.

Pick up outer lp around top of MC section, work SC around, join.

STRAP:
With MC, CH 12 [15], SC all around. Break yarn.

Make 2. Fasten across ankle front & sew button at 1 side.

Make 2nd bootie same way, alt side for sewing of button.

If desired, run elastic thread around inside of instep.
