Vintage 1946 Lace Circle Bag #1043

Whirlwind Flattery…pinwheel beauty with lace-like details.

MATERIALS:
Hiawatha Super Corde Art #38, 3 tubes
OR
Hiawatha Super Glo Plastic Cord Art #56, 3 tubes
OR

Steel Crochet Hook #1

BAG:
SIDES [MAKE 2]:
Ch 2, 8 sc in 2nd ch from hk.

Mark beg of rnds.

2ND RND:  2 Sc in each st [16 sc].

3RD RND:  * Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st.  Rep from * [24 sc].

4TH RND:  * 6 Dc in next st, sc in next st [shell made].  Rep from * ending with sl st instead of sc [12 shells].  Turn.

5TH RND:  Thru front lps, sl st in next 2 dc, * sc bet 3rd & 4th dc of shell, [over, insert hk from right to left around post of next dc & draw lp thru, over & thru 2 lps] 3 times; over, insert hk from right to left around next sc & draw lp thru, over & thru 2 lps, [over, draw up lp around next dc, over & thru 2 lps] 3 times; over & thru all 8 lps on hk, ch 3 [reverse shell made above 3 dc, sc & 3 dc].  Rep from * around.  Join with sc in 1st sc.  Turn.

6TH RND:  * 6 Dc in top of reverse shell, sc in next sc.  Rep from * around.  Turn.

7TH RND:  Same as 5th rnd.  Ch 1, turn.

8TH RND:  2 Sc in same place, * 3 sc in top of shell, 3 sc in next sc.  Rep from * [72 sts].

9TH & 10TH RNDS:  Inc 8 sc evenly around [88 sts].

11TH RND:  Sc even.

12TH RND:  * Sk next st, 6 dc in next st, sk next st, sc in next st.  Rep from * [22 shells].  Turn.

13TH, 14TH, 15TH, & 16TH RNDS:  Same as 5th, 6th, 5th & 8th rnds [132 sts].

17TH RND:  Inc 8 sc evenly [140 sts].

Work 1 rnd sc even.

19TH RND:  * Sc in next st, sk 1 st, 6 dc in next st, sk 2 sts.  Rep from * [28 shells].  Sl st in next st.  Fasten off.

GUSSET:
Ch 12.

1ST ROW:  Sc in 2nd ch from hk & in next 10 ch [11 sc].  Ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sc in each st.  Ch 1, turn.

Rep 2nd row for 15”.  Ch 1, turn.

NEXT ROW:  Work 5 sts.  Ch 1, turn.

Work these 5 sts only for 9 ½” ending at center edge.  Fasten off.

Sk center st.  Join thread to next st & work rem 5 sts for same number of rows, forming slot for zipper.  Ch 1, turn.

NEXT ROW:  Sc to inner edge, ch 1, sc across 1st section of slot, work sc even for ½”.  Fasten off.

HANDLES [MAKE 2]:
Ch 6.

1ST ROW:  Sc in 2nd ch from hk & in next 4 ch [5 sc].  Ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sc in each st.  Ch 1, turn.

Rep 2nd row until piece is 15”.  Fasten off.

FINISHING:
Cut 2 cardboard [or stiff plastic] circles size of sides, not incl last row of shells.  [This last row is not lined, but forms edging of bag.]

Cover with lining.

Cut buckram collar width of gusset & long enough to go around circles easily.

Thru center of collar cut out slot to insert zipper [3/4” wide & 9” long].

Make lining to cover collar, inserting zipper & reinforcing closed section with cardboard.

Sew lining covered collar bet sides of lining.

Enclose lining in crochet pieces.

Join short ends of gusset.

Line handles & sew to gusset at both ends of zipper.

Crochet small circles to cover ends of handles.

Attach zipper pull.
