Vintage 1946 Town & Country Shoulder Bag #1044

Town & Country Casual…shoulder sling bag with a go-anywhere quality

MATERIALS:
Hiawatha Super Twist Rayon Cord Art #41, 4 tubes
OR
Hiawatha Super Corde Art #37, 4 tubes

BAG:
BOTTOM:
Ch 20.

1ST RND:  3 Sc in 2nd ch from hk, sc in each ch across, 5 sc in last ch, sc along other side of foundation ch, 2 sc in same ch as 1st 3 sc [44 sc].

2ND RND:  3 Sc in next [center] sc, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in each st to 5 center sts at other end, 2 sc in next st, sc in next st, 3 sc in next [center] st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc to last 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in last st [8 sts inc].

3RD RND:  Sc, inc at ends only by working 3 sc in center st [4 sts inc].

4TH RND:  Sc, inc ends & also inc 1 st each side of each end [not over prev side incs—8 sts inc].

Rep last 2 rnds 3 more times [100 sts].

Work 1 rnd even.

NEXT RND:  Sc thru back lps, inc 16 sts evenly around ending with sl st in center st at one end [116 sts].  Turn.

SIDES:
1ST ROW:  Ch 3, * thru both lps, dc in next 23 sts, o, draw up lp in next st, o & thru 2 lps, sk last 2 dc made, draw up long lp at base of prev st [across 2 sk dc], o & thru 3 lps [herringbone st made].  Rep from * 18 times; dc in next st [19 patts].  Ch 3, turn.

Work even in patt until piece is 8” deep.  Fasten off.

Join thread at base of last dc of 1st row.

Work other side in same way.

Sew side seams.

Work 1 row sc around top of bag.

STRAP:
Ch 9.

1ST ROW:  Hdc in 2nd ch from hk & in next 7 ch [8 sts].  Ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  Hdc in each st.  Ch 1, turn.

Rep 2nd row until piece is 40”.  Fasten off.

Make 1 ½” piece in same way.  Fasten off.

FINISHING:
Cut cardboard [stiff plastic] oval size of bottom.

Cut 2 lining ovals slightly larger than cardboard.

Cover 1 side of cardboard with lining.

Using crocheted piece as patt, cut buckram interlining for sides.

Cut double lining for sides ½” larger all  around.

Make double lining for sides [inserting zipper 7 buckram interlining  & sew to rem lining oval.

Place lining in bag with bottom seam to inside & tack all seams.

Insert cardboard oval lined side up & sew in place.

Sew top of lining to bag.

Line strap.

Attach 1 ring at top of 1 side seam with small strip of crochet.

Lace 1 end of strap thru 3 rings as shown in photo.

Sew this end of strap to opposite seam.

Lace other end of strap thru rem 2 rings & thru fastened ring, adjusting to desired length.
