Vintage 1946 Chic Mailbox Bag #1042

MATERIALS:
Hiawatha Super Twist Rayon Cord Art #41, 4 tubes
OR
Hiawatha Super Crepe Corde Art #42, 4 tubes
OR
Hiawatha Belastraw Art #35, 3 tubes
Steel Crochet Hook #0
Hiawatha Lucite Handle #6276

BAG:
BOTTOM:
Ch 5, join with sl st into ring.

1ST RND:  8 Sc in ring.

Mark beg of rnd.

2ND RND:  * In next st work sc, ch 1 & sc; sc in next st.  Rep, from * around.

3RD RND:  * In next ch-1 sp work sc, ch 1 & sc; sc in next 3 sts.  Rep from * around.

4TH RND:  * Sc in each sc to ch-1; in ch-1 work sc, ch 1 & sc.  Rep from * around.

Cont sc around working sc, ch 1 & sc in each corner until piece is about 6 ½” across & there are 31 sc bet corners.

NEXT RND:  Sc in each sc & in each ch-1.

FOLLOWING RND:  Sc thru back lps ending with sl st in corner.  Ch 1, turn.

BACK:
1ST ROW [WRONG SIDE]:  Thru both lps, sc in next 32 sc.  Place colored marker in next st.  ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sc in next 4 sts, * ch 5, sc in next 4 sts.  Rep from * across.  Ch 1, turn.

3RD ROW:  With ch-5 lps at back, sc in each sc.  Ch 1, turn.

4TH ROW:  Sc in next 2 sts, * ch 5, sc in next 4 sts.  Rep from * ending with 2 sc.  Ch 1, turn.

5TH ROW:  Same as 3rd row.

Rep last 4 rows until back is 6” deep.

Place safety pin to indicate beg of flap.  Ch 1, turn.

Work 4” even.  Ch 1, turn.

SHAPE FLAP:
NEXT ROW:  Draw up lp in next 2 sts, over & thru 3 lps [dec made], work to last 2 sts, dec 1 st.  Ch 1, turn.

Rep last row until piece is 2 12” wide, ending with sc row.  Fasten off.

Join thread at colored marker.

Work front & 2 sides same as back until 6” deep, ending with sc row.  Fasten off.

FINISHING:
Work 1 row sc around all edges, with 3 sc at top corners except on flap.

Using crocheted piece as patt, cut buckram innerlining to exact size excluding flap.

Cut double lining ½” larger all around.

Make lining, inserting buckram innerlining & reinforcing bottom, front & back with cardboard [or stiff plastic].

Sew side seams of bag.

Sew lining in place, tacking at all seams.

Cut double lining for flap.

Line flap reinforcing 3 ½” at curved end with double buckram.

Sew flap securely over handle.

Sew on hook & eye.

Pinch top edge of sides at center to form gusset & tack.

Pinch corners of gussets & tack at top of seams.

MISS JULIA’S PURSE LINING NOTES:
Make paper patt for each crocheted piece before joinings & lay aside to be used later.

Cut lining according to paper patts & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.

Insert finished lining in bag. 

Sew in zipper [if desired].

Note: 
Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape of bag extra support.
