Free Pattern - Vintage 1946 Fancy Lace Motif Bag # 248

Vintage 1946 Fancy Lace Motif Bag # 248 
Size: 
Approximately 10” by 10”.

Materials: 
Bucilla Strawkraft
OR
Fleisher’s Straw-Twist, 5 balls
#2 Steel Crochet Hook
1 Zipper
1 Large Button
Lining Material

Gauge: 
Motif is approximately 2” square. 

Motif:  Make 50. 
Ch 6, sl st in 1st st.  ch 3, work 19 dc in ring, join with sl st in top of ch 3, work 19 dc in ring, join with sl st in top of ch 3; do sts, counting ch 3 as 1 st.

2nd rnd:  Sl st in sp bet ch 3 & 1st dc, ch 4, 1 dc bet 1st & 2nd dc, ch 1, 1 dc bet 2nd & 3rd dc, * ch 1, 1 dc bet next 2 dc; rep from * around, ch 1, join with sl st in 3rd st of ch.

3rd rnd:  Ch 1, 3 sc in 1st sp, * 2 sc in each of next 2 sps, 3 sc in next sp, ch 5, sk 1 sp, 3 sc in next sp; rep from *, end ch 5, sk last sp, sl st in 1st sc.  Fasten off. 

Sew 25 motifs tog forming square, 5 motifs in width & 5 in depth, for one side of bag. 

Work 1 row sc around entire square. 

Sew rem 25 motifs together & finish in same way for 2nd side.

Gusset: 
Ch 3, 1 sc in 2nd st, 1 sc in next st.

2nd row:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st.

3rd row:  Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to end. 

Rep 3rd row 3 times; 6 sts. 

Work even until 29” from beg.

Next row:  Ch 1, turn, sk 1st st, 1 sc in each st to end. 

Rep last row 3 times. 

Work 2 rows even on rem 2 sts.  Fasten off.

Handle: 
Ch 11, work 10 sc on ch.

2nd row:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st. 

Rep last row until 12” from beg.  Fasten off.

Finishing: 
Beg at center of one side of square, sewing under last sc row of square, sew one edge of gusset around outer edge of square to center of 4th side, leave rem edge of square free for opening. 

Sew other square to other edge of gusset in same way.

Turn down corner motifs at top of bag, tack on each side, as illustrated. 

Sew handle to top corner of bag.

LINE BAG: 
Finished Linings with zippers attached may be purchased ready-made; or may be made using suitable lining material & buckram for stiffening. 

Cut buckram ¼” smaller than bag on all sides, cover with lining & sew into bag with zipper at opening. 

Sew buttons on handle as illustrated.

Pull: 
Ch 6, join into ring as before, ch 3, work 16 dc in ring, join.  Fasten off. 

Make 2nd piece in same way.  Do not fasten off. 

With wrong sides of both pieces tog, join with 1 row of sc worked thru both thicknesses, join. 

Ch 8, turn, 1 sc in 2nd & each of 6 ch sts, sl st on edge of pull.  Fasten off. 

Sew to slide fastener.
