Vintage 1946 Chic Cocktail Peak Hat & Fan Bag Set # 250

Fashion’s Flattery…the peaked hat with contrasting ribbon—made artfully flirtations with wispy veiling.  Crochet it & the matching bag for smart accent.  Quick & easy to create, this delightful duo will become a season-spanning favorite!

MATERIALS:

Bucilla Strawkraft or Fleisher’s Straw-Twist, 3 balls
1 Steel Crochet Hook #0
Contrasting Ribbon

BAG:

Lining Material
Zipper
Ornament for zipper pull

GAUGE: 
HAT:
2 rnds = 1”
Entire hat is made using 2 strands.
BAG:
5 rows = 2”
 

HAT:
CROWN:
Ch 5, join with sl st.

Ch 3, 13 dc in ring [ch 3 counts as 1 dc].  Join this & all rnds with sl st in top of ch 3.

Work in back lp of sts in every rnd.

2ND RND:  Ch 3, 1 dc in same st as sl st, 2 dc in each st to end; 28 sts.

3RD RND:  Ch 3, 1 dc in same st as sl st, * 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st; rep from *, end 1 dc in last st; 42 sts.

4TH RND:  Ch 3, 1 dc in next st, * 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts; rep from *, end 2 dc in last st; 56 sts.

5TH, 6TH & 7TH RNDS:  Same as 4th rnd, having 1 more dc bet incs after each rnd; 98 sts.

8TH RND:  Fasten ends of 24” piece of wire tog, making circle about 7 ½” in diameter.

Ch 1, working over wire, 1 sc in same st as sl st, 1 sc in each of 47 sts, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 48 sts, 2 sc in last st, sl st in 1st sc; 100 sts.

9TH RND:  Ch 1, 1 sc in same st, 1 sc in each st to end, sl st in 1st sc; 100 sts.

10TH RND:  PATTERN:  Ch 3, cont working in back lp of sts, sk 1 st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, leaving last 2 lps on hk; turn work with wrong side toward you, working on right side, * yo, draw up lp in front lp of 3rd dc from hk on row below, yo,  thru 2 lps *; rep bet *’s twice, yo, thru 4 lps on hk, yo, thru 2 lps; turn work, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts; rep from Ω, end with sl st in top of ch; 25 patts.

11TH RND:  Ch 3, 1 dc in each of 7 sts, * work next 2 sts as 1 dc [a dec], 1 dc in each of next 8 sts; rep from *, end with dec; 90 sts.

12TH RND:  Work as for 11th rnd, working every 17th & 18th st tog 5 times; 85 sts.

13TH RND:  Ch 3, * 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st*; rep bet *’s once, 1 dc in each of 67 sts, 2 dc in next st; rep bet *’s twice; 90 sts.  Fasten off.

VISOR:
1ST ROW:  RIGHT SIDE:  Join with sl st in 23rd st from beg of rnd, working in front lp, 1 sc in each of 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, * 1 dc in each of 4 sts, 2 dc in next st *; rep bet *’s twice, 1 dc in each of 2 sts, 3 dc in next st [center front], 1 dc in each of 2 sts, 2 dc in next st; rep bet *’s twice, 1 dc in each of 4 sts, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of 3 sts, sl st in next st.

2ND ROW:  Ch 1, turn; sk 1st st, working in front lp, 1 sc in each of 9 sts, 1 dc in each of 17 sts, 3 dc in center st, 1 dc in each of 17 sts, 1 sc in each of 9 sts, sl st in next st.  Fasten off.

FINAL RND:  Fasten ends of 24” piece of wire, making circle about 7 ¼” in diameter.

Join yarn at center back.

Working on right side over wire & in back lp, work 1 rnd sc, inc 1 st every 10th st.  Fasten off.

Trim with ribbon as shown in photo. 

BAG:
Ch 5, join with sl st.  Ch 3 work 15 dc in ring [ch 3 counts as 1 dc]. 

Join this & every rnd with sl st in top of ch at beg of rnd. 

Work dc in each rnd in back loop of st.

2ND RND:  Ch 3, 1 dc in same st as sl st, 2 dc in back loop of each st; 32 sts.

3RD RND:  Ch 3, 1 dc in same st as sl st, * 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st; rep from *, end 1 dc in last st; 48 sts.

4TH RND:  Same as 3rd rnd; 72 sts.

5TH RND:  PATTERN:  Ch 3, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, ** 1 dc in next st leaving last 2 loops on hook; turn work with wrong side toward you, working on right side, * yo, draw up a loop in front of 3rd dc from hook on row below, yo, thru 2 loops *; rep bet *’s twice, yo, thru 4 loops, yo, thru 2 loops; turn work, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts; rep from **, end sl st on top of ch; 18 pats.

6TH RND:  Ch 3, 1 dc in next st, * 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts; rep from *, end 2 dc in last st; 96 sts.

7TH RND:  Ch 3, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, * 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts; rep from *, end 2 dc in last st; 120 sts.

8TH RND:  Same as 5th rnd having 30 pats.

Rep 6th, 7th & 8th rnd 4 times, working 1 more dc bet incs after each inc rnd & 12 pats more in each pat rnd.

21ST RND:  Ch 1, 1 sc in same st as sl st, 1 sc in each st to end, sl st in next sc.  Fasten off. 

Fold in half at beg of rnd.

LINE BAG: 

Finished Linings with zippers attached may be purchased ready-made; or may be made using suitable lining material & buckram for stiffening. 

Cut buckram ¼” smaller than bag on all sides, cover with lining & sew into bag with zipper at opening. 

Ch 10, work 9 sc on ch.  Fasten off. 

Attach ornament to zipper pull with this piece.

MISS JULIA’S PURSE LINING NOTES:
[Before joining finished pattern pieces]

Make paper patt from crocheted pieces & lay aside to be used later.

Cut lining according to paper patt & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.

Insert finished lining in bag. 

Sew in zipper [if desired].

Attach ornament to zipper pull tab [if desired].

Note:  Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between 2 layers of lining & bag to give shape extra support.
