Vintage 1945 Sophisticate Purse #270

Materials:

J & P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 6 balls

#6 Bone Crochet Hook

1/2 yd Felt or Buckram Material

10” Zipper

Use 4 threads throughout.

Gauge: 

4 sts = 1”;      

4 ½ rnds =  1”

BAG Piece [Make 2]: 

Starting at center, ch 16.

1^st rnd:  3 Sc in 2^nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, 3 sc in last ch.  Working across opposite side of starting chain, make sc in each ch across [32 sc].

2^nd rnd:  [3 Sc in next sc, sc in next sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in each sc to next 3-sc group] twice.

3^rd to 10^th rnds:  [Sc in each sc to center sc of next 3-sc group, 3 sc in center sc] 4 times; sc in each sc to end of rnd [19 sc between center sc on each short side,

31 sc between center sc on each long side].

11^th rnd:  Sc in each sc to center sc of next 3-sc group [lower corner], 3 sc in center sc, [sc in each sc to center sc of next 3-sc group, 5 sc in center sc--upper corner] twice, sc in each sc to next 3-sc group, 3 sc in center sc, sc in each sc to end of rnd.

12 to 19^th rnds:  Sc in each sc to center sc of next 3-sc group, 3 sc in center sc, [sc in each sc to center sc of next 5-sc group, 5 sc in center sc] twice, sc in each sc to center sc of next 3-sc group, 3 sc in center sc, sc in each sc to end of rnd.  Break off.

Top:  1^st row:  Attach thread to center sc of 1^st 5-sc group.  Sc in sc where thread was attached, working across upper edge, make sc in each sc to center sc of next 5-sc group, sc in center sc [69 sc].  Ch 1, turn.

2^nd to 14^th rows:  Sc in next 69 sc.  Ch 1, turn. 

Break off at end of 14^th row. 

On 2^nd Bag Piece, do not break off at end of 14^th row. 

Hold the 2 Bag Pieces wrong sides together & working through both thicknesses, make a row of sc across short side, lower edge & other short side.  Break off.

Cut out lining & buckram to fit Bag Piece up to the 19^th rnd. 

Sew in place, inserting zipper at center of top. 

Now cut lining & buckram to fit top piece & sew in place. 

Make 2 horizontal pleats on each side at center of each top piece. 

For front piece, cut a piece of felt 2 X 10” & one 2 X 8”l. 

Sew one end of 2 X10” piece to inside of Bag, back of pleat. 

Sew one end of the 2 X 8” piece 1” below pleats in center of top. 

Fold free ends of the 2 pieces together to form bow & sew in place.
