Vintage 1945 Shell Stitch Jacket #419

Quick & easy to create in a feminine shell stitch, this becoming bed jacket will become a favorite!

SIZE:  
Medium

MATERIALS: 
Chadwick’s Red Heart Baby Wool, 10 balls [¾ oz balls]
#1 & #9 Steel Crochet Hooks
4 yds Lace, 3” wide
1 2/3 yds Ribbon

GAUGE:  
1 shell = 1 ¼” across

MEASUREMENTS:  
Bust -- 37”;  
Width across back at underarm -- 18”;  
Width across each front at underarm -- 10”;  
Width across back bet armholes -- 14”;  
Length of side seam -- 10”;  
Length from shoulder to lower edge -- 17 ½”;  
Width of sleeve at upper arm -- 13”;  
Length of sleeve [incl lace] -- 12 ½”.

BACK:  BAND:  
Start at narrow end with #1 hook, ch 15.

1ST ROW:  Sc in 2nd ch from hook & in each ch across.  C h 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sc in back loop of each sc across.  Ch 1, turn.  

Rep 2nd row until piece meas 12 ½”.  Do not break off, but work 85 sc evenly across long edge of Band.  Turn. 

Change to #9 hook & work in shell patt as follows:

1ST ROW:  Ch 4; in 1st sc make dc, ch 1 & dc [half shell], * sk 2 sc, sc in next sc, sk 2 sc, in next sc make [dc, ch 1] 4 times & dc [shell].  Rep from * across, end with [dc, ch 1] twice & dc [half shell].  Ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sc in 1st dc, * shell in next sc, sc in center dc of next shell.  Rep from * across, end with shell, sc in last st of half shell.  Ch 4, turn.

3RD ROW:  Make half shell in 1st sc, * sc in center dc of next shell, shell in next sc.  Rep from * across, end with half shell in last sc.  Ch 1, turn.  

Rep 2nd & 3rd rows alternately until piece meas 10” incl Band, end with 2nd row.  Turn.

TO SHAPE ARMHOLES:  
1ST & 2ND ROWS:  Sl st to center dc of next shell [1 half shell dec], sc in same dc, shell in next sc, sc in center dc of next shell & cont in patt across, end with sc in center dc of last shell [another half shell dec].  Turn.  

At end of 2nd row, ch 4 to turn.

3RD ROW:  Same as 3rd row of Back.  

Work in patt until piece meas 6 ½” from 1st row of armhole shaping, end with 2nd row of patt.

TO SHAPE SHOULDERS:  
Sl st to center dc of 2nd shell, sc in center dc, shell in next sc & cont in patt across, end with sc in 2nd shell from end of row.  Turn.  

Rep this row once more.  Break off.

RIGHT FRONT:  
With #1 hook make Band as for Back 7” long.  

Do not break off, but work 49 sc evenly across long edge of Band.  Turn.  

Change to #9 hook, work in patt as for Back until piece meas 10”, incl Band, end with 2nd row.  Turn.

TO SHAPE ARMHOLE:  
Dec 1 half shell on one edge only for 2 rows [armhole edge], keep opposite edge straight [this is front edge].  

Now work straight in patt until piece meas 5” from 1st row of armhole shaping, end with 2nd row.

TO SHAPE NECK:  
Keep armhole edge straight, dec 1 half shell on each row at front edge 4 times in all.  

Keep neck edge straight, shape shoulder as for Back.

LEFT FRONT:  
Work as for Right Front, reverse shapings.

SLEEVES:  
Start at bottom with #1 hook, make ch 15” long [9 ch = 2”].

1ST ROW:  Sc in 2nd ch from hook & in each ch across until 61 sc are made.  Cut off rem ch.  Turn.

Change to #9 hook & work in shell patt as for Back until piece meas 10”, end with 2nd row.  Ch 4, turn.

TO SHAPE TOP:  
Dec half shell both ends of next 2 rows.  

Work straight in patt until piece meas 13”, end with 2nd row.  

Now dec half shell at both ends of each row, until 1 complete shell & 2 half shells rem.  Break off.

FINISHING:  
Sew side & shoulder seams.  

Sew sleeve seams & sew sleeves in.  

Work row of sc along front & neck edges.  

Cut off 2 yds of lace.  

Shirr lace to meas same as neck edge & sew in place.  

Cut rem of lace in half.  

Shirr each piece to meas same as sleeve edges.  

Sew tog narrow edges of lace & sew shirred lace in place at bottom of sleeves.  

Cut ribbon in 6 equal parts.  

Sew one piece on each side of neck edge, one piece at center edge of each Front & one piece at top of Bands.  

Tie into bow.
