Vintage 1935 Openwork Sweater #435

Quick & easy to create a charming sweater with an open-work design pattern…a sophisticated, season-spanning wardrobe favorite…perfect for many occasions!


SIZE:  16.

MATERIALS:
BLOUSE: 
Bear Brand or Bucilla French Zephyr, 3 balls
#4 Knitting Needles
#2 Crochet Hook
46” - 3/8” Ribbon
2 - 5/8” Buttons

GAUGE:  
7 sts= 1”;     9 rows = 1”. 

BLOUSE BACK:  
Cast on 115 sts for lower edge.

1ST ROW:  K 29 sts, yo, k 2 tog, k 14, yo, k 2 tog, k 21, yo, k 2 tog, k 14, yo, k 2 tog, k 29.

2ND ROW:  P.  

Rep these 2 rows for patt of Back.  

Work until Back is 13”.  

Bind off 7 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows for underarm.  

Dec 1 st each side every 2nd row 5 times, end with p row.

1ST OPENWORK STRIPE:  With right side of work toward you, k 1, * yo, 
k 2 tog, * rep bet *s 8 times; k 14 sts; yo, k 2 tog; k 21; yo, k 2 tog; k 14; rep bet *s 9 times, k 1.  P 1 row.

NEXT ROW:  K 33; yo, k 2 tog; k 21; yo, k 2 tog; k 33.  P 1 row.  Rep last 2 rows for 2”.

2ND OPENWORK STRIPE:  With right side toward you, k 1; * yo, k 2 tog, * rep bet *s 16 times; k 21; rep bet *s 17 times; end with k 1.  P 1 row.  

Work even in st st [k 1 row, p 1 row] until 6” from sts bound off for underarm.  

Bind off 5 sts at beg of each of next 8 rows.  

Bind off 4 sts at beg of each of next 4 rows [28 sts bound off for each shoulder].  

Bind off rem 35 sts for back of neck.

BLOUSE FRONT:  
Cast on 129 sts for lower edge.

1ST ROW:  K 36 sts; yo, k 2 tog; k 14; yo, k 2 tog; k 21; yo, k 2 tog; k 14; yo, k 2 tog; k 36.  

P 1 row.  

Rep these 2 rows for patt of Front.  

Work until long as back to underarm.  

Bind off 11 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows for underarm.  

Dec 1 st each side every 2nd row 5 times, end with p row.

1ST OPENWORK STRIPE:  K 2 tog; * yo, k 2 tog, * rep bet *s 9 times; k 14 sts; yo, k 2 tog; k 21 sts; yo, k 2 tog; k 14; rep bet *s 10 times; k 2 tog.  

P 1 row. 

NEXT ROW:  K 35; yo, k 2 tog; k 21; yo, k 2 tog; k 35.  

P 1 row.  

Rep last 2 rows for 2”, end with p row.

2ND OPENWORK STRIPE:  K 1, * yo, k 2 tog, * rep bet *s 17 times; k 21; rep bet *s 18 times; k 1.  P 1 row.  

Work even in st st until 4” from sts bound off for underarm, end with p row.  

K 28 sts; place them on st holder; bind off 39 sts for front of neck, k 28.  

Work even on these 28 sts for right shoulder until 6 ½” from sts bound off for underarm, end at armhole.  

Bind off 7 sts at beg of row & rep every 2nd row [armhole edge] until all sts are bound off.  

Take up sts of left shoulder & work to correspond to right shoulder.

SLEEVES:  
Cast on 84 sts.  

P 1 row.

NEXT ROW:  K 1; * yo, k 2 tog * rep bet *s to end of row.  

P 1 row.  

Cont st st, inc 1 st each side every 1” 4 times. 

Work until sleeve meas 4 ½” from beg.  

Bind off 9 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows.  

Dec 1 st each side every 2nd row 5 times, end with p row.

2ND OPENWORK STRIPE:  K 2 tog, * yo, k 2 tog, rep from * across row to within 2 sts of end, end k 2 tog.  

P 1 row.  

Work in st st, dec 1 st each side every 2nd row 9 times more.

3RD OPENWORK STRIPE:  Same as 2nd Openwork Stripe.  

P 1 row.  

Cont st st, dec 2 sts each side every 2nd row 4 times.  

Bind off rem 26 sts.  

Sew Blouse & sleeve seams.  

Sew Sleeves to Blouse with Sleeve at center underarm.

NECKBAND:  
Hold right side of blouse toward you, beg at right shoulder, pick up & k 35 sts across back of neck.  

P 1 row.  

Work 1 row openwork as on lower edge of Sleeve.  

P 1 row.  Bind off.  

With right side of Blouse toward you, beg at left shoulder, pick up & k 24 sts down neck edge to corner, 37 sts across front of neck, & 24 sts up other side to right shoulder.  

Work 3 rows as on back of neck.  Bind off.  

Sew tog ends of rows at shoulders.  

Hold right side of Blouse toward you, work 1 row sc around neck edge, work 1 sc in each st, join with sl st to 1st st.  Fasten off.  

Work same 1 row sc on ends of Sleeves.  

On lower edge of Blouse, beg at underarm seam, * work 1 sc in each st for 5 sts, draw up loop in each of next 2 sts & work off as 1 st, rep from * around lower edge, join with sl st to 1st st, ch 1.  Do not turn.  

Work 1 more rnd working 1 sc in each st.  Fasten off.

BELT:  
With yarn doubled, ch 8 sts, join with sl st to 1st st of ch to form ring, make ch until it is 26” [incl ring].  

Work 1 sc in each st of ch to within 11 sts of ring, ch 3 sts, sk 3 sts on foundation ch, work 1 sc in each of 8 sts, work 1 sc in each of 2 sts of ring, 2 sc in each of 3 sts of ring, 1 sc in each of 3 sts of ring, 1 sc in each st on other side of foundation ch; work 2 sc in end st.

2ND RND:  Work 2 sts in each of 1st 2 sts of 1st rnd, then work 1 sc in each st across long side, work 2 sc in each of 4 sts across end, work 1 sc in each st across long side, 2 sts in each of 4 sts across end, then work 1 sl st in each of 2 sts.  Fasten off.  

Belt should be 30”.  

Work buttonholes in buttonhole st.

BELT LOOPS:  
Join double yarn with sl st at side seam *’ below underarm, make ch 1”, join with sl st at side seam, 1” below.  Fasten off.  

Make loop at other seam in same way.  

Cut 32” ribbon, line Belt.  

Sew ribbon to wrong side of blouse across shoulders & back of neck.  

Sew 1 button ½” from end of Belt opposite buttonholes.  

Sew 2nd button 1 ¾” from 1st button.
