Free Pattern - Vintage 1945 Pretty, Quick & Easy Purse #266

Vintage 1945 Pretty, Quick & Easy Purse #266 
Materials:
J & P Coats Pearl Cotton Size 5, 8 balls
Chadwick’s Red Heart Knitting Worsted, 3 balls [1 oz each]
#5 Bone Crochet Hook
1/2 yd each of Felt & Buckram Material
2 Rings, 1 ½” diameter

Use single yarn & double cotton throughout.

Gauge: 
4 sts = 1”;      
4 rows [3 sc rows & 1 dc row] =  1”

BAG:
Starting at center with yarn, ch 4.  Join.
1st rnd:  Ch 3, 11 dc in ring.  Join with sl st in 3rd st of ch-3.  Drop yarn.

2nd rnd:  Draw cotton through st on hook, ch 1, 2 sc in joining st, [sc in next 2 dc, 3 sc in next dc] 3 times; sc in next 2 dc, sc in joining st.  Sl st in 1st sc.

3rd rnd:  Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st sc, [sc in each sc to center sc of next 3-sc group, 3 sc in center sc] 3 times; sc in each sc to end of rnd.  Sc in joining st.  Drop cotton.

4th rnd:  Draw yarn through st on hook.  Ch 3, dc in joining st, [dc in each st to center sc of next 3-sc group, 3 dc in center sc] 3 times; dc in each sc to end of rnd.  Sl st in 3rd st of ch-3.  Drop yarn. 

Repeat the last 3 rnds [2nd to 4th rnds incl] until 9 yarn stripes are completed.  Break off. 

Line bag with buckram & lining material.  [See Note at end of patt.]

Mark with pins, 2 points, each 7” back from any corner. 

Turn in the corner between these 2 points as far as pin marks & pin corner & the 2 pin marks together. 

Attach cotton at fold formed by turn-back; working  through both thicknesses, thus joining sides of Gusset, make sc in each sc to pin mark, sc in each sc from pin mark to opposite fold.  Break off. 

Make a similar gusset on opposite corner. 

Sew a rnd 2” from points of other 2 corners.

Handle: 
With yarn, make a chain 15” long.

1st row:  Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across.  Ch 1, turn.

2nd row:  Sc in each sc across.  Break yarn. 

With cotton, make 2 more rows of sc.  Break off. 

Draw ends of Handle through inside of rings & sew ends together.

MISS JULIA’S PURSE LINING NOTES:
Make paper patt for each crocheted piece before joinings & lay aside to be used later.

Cut lining according to paper patts & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.

Insert finished lining in bag. 

Sew in zipper [if desired].

Note:  Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape of bag extra support.
