Vintage 1940s Cosmopolitan Purse #267
Quick & easy to create, this delightful purse will become a season-spanning favorite!

MATERIALS: 
1 large spool Guimp, or Interchangeable with Corde, or Soutache
#6 Steel Crochet Hook
Lining Material
2 Handles

ABBREVIATIONS:

BAG SECTIONS: 
1ST ROW:  Ch 104 sts, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each of next 8 chs [9 sc].  * 3 Sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 9 chs, sk 2 chs, 1 sc in each of next 9 chs.  Rep from * across row, end 3 sc in next ch, 1 sc in each of last 9 chs, ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  [Always pick up back loop from now on].  Sk 1 st, * 1 sc in each of 9 sts, 3 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 9 sts, sk 2 sts.  Rep from * across row, end 3 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 8 sts, sk 1 st, 1 sc in last st, ch 1, turn.

Rep 2nd row [always dec 1st at beg & end], until section meas 7”.  Break yarn.

Make 5 more sections in same manner.

HANDLE TABS [MAKE 2]: 
1ST ROW:  Ch 36, work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, & in each ch, across row [35 sts], ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sl st into each of first 5 sts, 1 sc into each of next 5 sts, 1 hdc into each of next 5 sts, 1 dc into each of next 5 sts, 1 hdc into each of next 5 sts, 1 sc into each of next 5 sts, 1 sl st into each of next 5 sts, ch 1, turn.

3RD ROW:  1 Sc into each of first 10 sts, 1 hdc into each of next 5 sts, 1 dc into each of next 5 sts, 1 hdc into each of next 5 sts, 1 sc into each of last 10 sts, ch 1, turn.

Rep 3rd row twice. 

Rep 1st row once. 

Work 1 row sc into each st [35 sts].  Break yarn.

Make paper patt for each crocheted piece & lay aside to be used later.

TO ASSEMBLE: 
Pleat each section, on last row of work, in the following manner:  Place 1st point over 2nd point & tack with needle & thread;  place 2nd point over 3rd point & tack;  place 3rd point over 4th point 7 tack; place 4th point over 5th point & tack. 

This should draw work into approx 2”. 

Tack each of the 6 sections in same manner. 

Tack 2 pleated edges tog in bow fashion. 

Join 3rd section in place by sewing 1 side to side of first section & other side to side of 2nd section. 

Do not join pleated edge at center, until tab has been pulled thru & in place. 

Work 1 row sc on top of bag. 

Sew handles in place; tack tab over handles on wrong side. 

Tack center pleats to meet bow.

GUSSET: 
With right side facing, fold points down & work approx 169 sc from 1 end of bottom to other end. 

Work sc [picking up both loops] across row.  Rep this row once.  Break yarn. 

With wrong side facing, start 30 sts from beg of row, work sc into each st to within 30 sts from end.  Break yarn.  Turn. 

Start 60 sts from beg of row, work sc into each st across to within 60 sts from end.  Break yarn.  [This completes short rows.]

Work 1 complete row sc [169 sts].  Break yarn. 

Work gusset on back half of bag in same manner & sew tog on right side of work.

FINISHING: 
Cut lining according to paper patts & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.

Insert finished lining in bag.

Note:  Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape of bag extra support.
