Vintage 1945 Heart Strings Bag #710

Everything to make it becoming.  A fashionable vintage design, & a season-spanning, wardrobe favorite!

MATERIALS:
Hiawatha Super Corde Art #38 or #39 , 3 tubes
OR
Hiawatha Super Crepe Corde Art #42, 4 tubes
Steel Crochet Hook #0
OR
Bone Crochet Hook #3
Hiawatha Lining Material & Buckram Art #H-113
8 Bone Rings 1 ¼” in diameter

BAG:
Starting at one corner, ch 2.

1ST ROW:  Sc in 2nd ch from hk, * ch 2, [yo, insert hk in sc & draw lp thru to height of ½”] 3 times; yo & draw thru all 7 lps on hk, ch 1 to fasten [puff st made], sc in top of prev puff st.  Rep from * until there are 3 puff sts in all, ending with sc.  Ch 2, turn.

2ND ROW:  Make puff st in sc, * sc in next sc, ch 2, puff st in same place as last st.  Rep from * across until there are 4 puff sts, ending with sc in top of last puff st.  Ch 2, turn.

Rep 2nd row, thus inc 1 puff st at end of each row, until piece meas 7” [meas down center, from 1st row].  Ch 2, turn.

Work 6 rows even.

NEXT ROW:  Work puff st across as before, but do not work over last puff st of prev row [1 puff st dec].  Ch 1, turn.

Rep last row until only 3 puff sts rem.

Work 1 row even.  Fasten off.

GUSSETS [MAKE 4]:
1ST ROW:  Same as 1st row of large piece, making 5 puff sts instead of 3.  Ch 2, turn.

2ND ROW:  Same as 2nd row of large piece [1 puff st inc].  Ch 1, turn.

3RD ROW:  Work even.

4TH ROW:  Same as 2nd row [7 puff sts].

Work 3 rows even.

NEXT ROW:  Work in patt, dec 1 puff st at end of row.  Ch 1, turn.

Work 1 row even.

Work 1 row dec 1 puff st at end [5 puff sts].

Work 1 row even, fasten off.

Straight edge is top of gusset.

FINISHING:
Cut patt of crocheted pieces.

Cover bone rings closely with sc.

Sew 2 bone rings at top of each crocheted gusset.

Turn 4 corners of bag toward center & pin gussets in position.

Working with bag toward you, work sc thru bag & gussets thus joining.

Make lining [inserting buckram interlining in large piece only], & sew into bag.

Using double corde, make ch 30” long, then work sl st back along chain.

Draw cord thru rings & knot ends tog.

Make 2nd cord & pull thru rings from opposite side of bag.
