Vintage 1944 Classically Elegant Clutch #259

Quick & easy to create, this classic, knit clutch bag will become a season-spanning favorite…you‘ll want to recreate in many colors!

SIZE:
Approximate size 16” by 9”.

MATERIALS: 
Fleisher’s Superior Knitting Worsted, 2 skeins; or
Bear Brand-Bucilla Standard Knitting Worsted, 2 skeins
1 Pair #3 Knitting Needles
Lining Material

GAUGE: 
6 sts = 1”:    
8 rows = 1”

BAG:
Cast on 95 sts.

1ST ROW:  * P 5, k 5; rep from *, end p 5.

2ND ROW:  * K 5, p 5; rep from *, end k 5.

3RD ROW:  * P 4, k 1, p 1, k 4; rep from *, end p 4, k 1.

4TH ROW:  * P 1, k 4, p 4, k 1; rep from *, end p 1, k 4.

5TH ROW:  * P 3, k 2, p 2, k 3; rep from *, end p 3, k 2.

6TH ROW:  * P 2, k 3, p 3, k 2; rep from *, end p 2, k 3.

7TH ROW:  Same as 6th row.

8TH ROW:  Same as 5th row.

9TH ROW:  Same as 4th row.

10TH ROW:  Same as 3rd row.

11TH ROW:  Same as 2nd row.

12TH ROW:  Same as 1st row.

13TH ROW:  * K 4, p 1, k 1, p 4; rep from *, end k 4, p 1.

14TH ROW:  * K 1, p 4, k 4, p 1; rep from *, end k 1, p 4.

15TH ROW:  * K 3, p 2, k 2, p 3; rep from *, end k 3, p 2.

16TH ROW:  * K 2, p 3, k 3, p 2; rep from *, end k 2, p 3.

17TH ROW:  Same as 16th row.

18TH ROW:  Same as 15th row.

19TH ROW:  Same as 14th row.

20TH ROW:  Same as 13th row. 

Rep these 20 rows of patt until piece measures 21” from lower edge, about 170 rows.  Bind off.

BUTTON COVER: 
Cast on 15 sts, work patt for 30 rows.  Bind off.

FINISHING: 
Cover 2 ¼” buttonmold or button. 

Pin out & steam to measurements.

Fold bag leaving 3 ½” from bound-off edge free for flap. 

Sew side seams.

From right side, work 1 row sc around 3 sides of flap, keeping an even edge. 

Work 1 row sc across top edge.

Line bag. 

Ch 16 for button loop, fasten at center of flap. 

Sew on button. 

MISS JULIA’S PURSE LINING NOTES:
Make paper patt for each crocheted piece before joinings & lay aside to be used later.

Cut lining according to paper patts & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.

Insert finished lining in bag. 

Sew in zipper [if desired].

Note: 
Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape of bag extra support.
