Vintage 1940s Elegant Butterfly Bag #528

Quick & easy to crochet this charming ’butterfly” handbag…stylish lines of classic design…sophisticated & smart, season-spanning, wardrobe favorites…perfect for any occasion!

MATERIALS: 
1-1 lb spool  F & K Corde, Interchangeable with Ribbonette, Bagtwist, Straw, or Soutache
#4 Bone Crochet Hook
½ yd Lining Material
Zipper
Ornament

STITCHES:                                    
BET  =       Between
CH    =       Chain                           
DC    =       Double Crochet
REP  =       Repeat
SC    =       Single Crochet  
SK    =       Skip
ST     =       Stitch
TOG =       Together
TRC  =       Triple Crochet

CLUTCH:
Ch 26.

1ST ROW:  * 1 Dc in first st, 1 sc in next st *, rep bet *s across row, end row with 1 dc in last st, ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW & ALL EVEN ROWS:  Work 1 sc in each st or row below.

3RD ROW:  * 1 Dc around front of post of dc of first row, 1 sc in next st, rep bet * across row, ending row with post st, ch 1, turn.

Rep 2nd & 3rd rows for 23”, ending with sc row, ch 4.

Working up side of strip.

1ST ROW:  * Sk 1 st, 2 trc,  ch 2 & 2 trc in next st, sk 1 st, work 1 trc in next st, * rep bet * 6 more times, ending row with 1 trc, ch 4, turn.

2ND ROW:  * Work 2 trc, ch 2 & 2 trc in ch 2 of shell of prev row, 1 trc around front of post of trc of prev row, * rep bet * across row, ending row with trc in top of ch 4 of prev row, ch 4, turn.

3RD ROW:  * Work 3 trc, ch 2 & 3 trc in ch 2 of shell of prev row, 1 trc around back of post of trc of prev row, * rep bet * across row, ending with trc in top of ch 4, ch 4, turn.

4TH ROW:  Work same as 3rd row with exception that trc is worked around FRONT of post.

5TH ROW:  Work same as 3rd row, working 4 trc, ch 2, & 4 trc in shell. 

6TH ROW:  Work same as 4th row, working 4 trc, ch 2, & 4 trc in shell.

Work opposite side & other end of strip in same manner.

Make paper patt from crocheted piece & lay aside to be used later.

Fold in half as shown in photo & join tightly with sc sts.

FINISHING:  
Cut lining according to paper patt & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.

Insert finished lining in bag. 

Sew zipper into bag for closure.

Attach ornament to zipper pull.

Note:  Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between 2 layers of lining & bag to give shape extra support.
