Vintage 1946 Elena’s Wrist Strap Bag #529

Quick & easy to crochet this versatile, wrist-strap bag…maximum of room with a minimum of bulk…stylish lines of classic design…sophisticated & smart, season-spanning, wardrobe favorites…perfect for many occasions!

MATERIALS: 

3 tubes Hiawatha super Crepe Corde, Art #42, Super Corde Art #37, or Super Twist Rayon Corde Art #41

#0 Steel Crochet Hook

Hiawatha Bag Lining Kit, or ½ yd Lining Material

Hiawatha Lucite Hook & Eye, or ornamental Buckle of your choice

7” Zipper

STITCHES:                                      

BET    =          Between

CH      =          Chain                        

DEC   =          Decrease

REP    =          Repeat

SC      =          Single Crochet        

SK       =          Skip

ST       =          Stitch

TOG    =          Together

SIDES:  

Make 10” chain.

1^ST ROW:  Sc in 2^nd ch from hook & in each ch until row is 8 ½” [odd number of sts].  Cut off rem ch.  Ch 1, turn.

2^ND ROW:  Thru back loops, sc in first st, ch 1, * draw up loop in same place, sk next st, draw up loop in nest st, over & thru all loops, ch 1 [cluster made].  Rep from * across.  Ch 1, turn.

3^RD ROW:  

RIGHT SIDE:  3 Sc in 1^st cluster, 2 sc in each rem cluster.  Ch 1, turn.  

Rep 2^nd & 3^rd rows until piece is 14 ½”, end with sc row.  

From right side, with 3 sc in each corner, sc around all edges.  Fasten off.

GUSSET:  [MAKE 2]:  

Ch 12 for bottom edge:

1^ST ROW:  Sc in 2^nd ch from hook & in next 10 ch [11 sc].  Ch 1, turn.  

Rep 2^nd & 3^rd rows of Sides until piece is 2”, ending with cluster row.  Ch 1, turn.

NEXT ROW:  2 Sc in each of 4 clusters, sc in last cluster [2 decs made].  Ch 1, turn.  

Work even 2”.  

Rep decs.  

Work even until piece is 6”. 

From right side, with 3 sc in top corners, sc around all edges.  Fasten off.

HANDLE:  [MADE IN 2 PIECES]:  

Make 3” ch.

1^ST ROW:  Sc in 2^nd ch from hook & in each ch until row is 2” [odd number of sts].  

Rep 2^nd & 3^rd rows of Sides until piece is 10 ½”, ending with sc row.

From right side, with 3 sc in each corner, sc around all edges.  Fasten off.  

Make 3” piece in same way.

FINISHING: 

Using crocheted pieces as pattern, cut buckram interlining to exact size.

Cut double lining ½” larger all around.

Make lining with zipper, inserting interlining & reinforcing Gussets with cardboard [or plastic].

Pin Sides of bag around lining, then pin Gussets in place.

With Sides toward you, sl st Gussets to Sides.

Sew top edges to lining, inserting 1 short end of each piece of Handle at center of one Side. 

Tack all seams. 

Slip ends of Hook & Eye bet sts ¾” above free ends of Handle. 

Turn ends in & tack.

Note:  Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between 2 layers of lining & bag to give shape extra support.
