Vintage 1940s Chic Evening Bag #291
MATERIALS:
4 tubes Corticelli Corde
#13 Aero Crochet Hook
1 Spool Metallic Thread
1/2 yd - 42” Satin Lining
1 Button,
or Snap Fastener with Jeweled Pin

GAUGE: 
5 sc = 1”

BAG:
Starting at top edge, ch 32, turn.

1ST ROW:  Sc in 2nd ch from hook, * 1 dc, 3 sc; rep from * end 3 sc.

2ND ROW:  2 Sc in 1st sc [an inc], 2 sc, * ch 1, sk next dc, 3 sc; rep from * end 2 sc in last sc [an inc].

3RD ROW:  1 Dc, * 3 sc, yo, insert hook under post of next dc on prev row & pull loop thru, comp dc, sk ch-1; rep from * end 1 dc.

4TH ROW & ALL EVEN NUMBERED ROWS:  Work 2 sc in 1st st, sc in every sc & ch 1 over each dc, work 2 sc in last st.

5TH ROW:  1 Sc , * dc under post of next dc on prev row, sk ch - 1, 3 sc; rep from * end 1 sc. 

Cont to work in this manner, inc 1 st beg & end of every even numbered row & working 1 st more into pat on every odd numbered row until work meas 16” across. 

Mark this diagonal for centre bottom of bag. 

Cont in pat dec 1 st beg & end of every numbered row until 32 sts rem. 

Mark beg & end of row with contrast thread for position of handles & top of gusset. 

Cont to dec as before until all sts are gone.  This forms flap. 

Do not break thread, but work 1 rnd sc around entire piece, working 2 sc at each corner to keep work flat.  Join with sl st.  Fasten off. 

Join metallic thread & work 2 rnds sc, inc at corners as before.  Fasten off. 

Press on wrong side with damp cloth. 

Outline shape on brown paper.

HANDLE: 
Make 3 cords [2 of main color & 1 metallic].

TO MAKE CORD: 
Ch 10”.  work 1 sc in each ch across row.  Fasten off. 

Press with damp cloth. 

Plait 3 cords tog fastening ends securely.

LINING: 
Cut 2 pieces lining same size as bag & mark center of diagonal for bottom of bag. 

Cut oblong of cardboard [or plastic] 9” x 3 ½”. 

Insert cardboard bet linings, centering on diagonal line. 

Stitch around edge to hold in place.

TO COMPLETE BAG: 
Sew handle securely straight up & down at points marked with colored thread. 

Turn under edges of lining & sew to inside of metallic border. 

Bring lower points up to form gusset & stitch below metallic edge. 

Fold flap over & fasten with button & loop, or apply snap fastener using suitable pin or ornament as desired.
