GAUGE:

sc = 1” [#13 hook]
BASE:
With
#13 hook, ch 36.
1ST
ROW: Sc in 2nd ch from hook,
sc in rem 34 ch [35 sc], ch 1, turn.
2ND
ROW: Sc in each sc, ch 1, turn.
Rep
2nd row until base measures 2 ¼”, ch 1, turn. Do not break yarn.
Press
lightly on wrong side with damp cloth.
Outline
shape on brown paper.
Now
work up to form sides as follows:
1ST
RND: Sc to end of row, 14 sc along side,
sc across other 35 sc, 14 sc along other side [98 sc]. Join with sl st.
2ND
RND: Ch 3, * sk 2 sc, in back loop of
next sc make 2 dc, ch 1, & 2 dc [shell], sk 2 dc, dc in back loops of next
2 sc. Rep from * joining last dc with sl
st in top of 1st dc.
3RD
RND: Ch 3, * shell in ch 1 sp of next
shell, [yo, insert hook under post of next dc & pull loop thru, complete a
dc] twice. Rep from * joining last dc
with sl st in top of 1st dc.
4TH
TO 7TH RNDS: Rep 3rd
rnd.
8TH
RND: Ch 3, * in ch 1 sp of next shell
make 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, make 2 post sts.
Rep from *, joining as before.
9TH
TO 12TH RNDS: Rep 8th
rnd.
13TH
TO 19TH RNDS: Using #14 hook,
rep 8th rnd.
20TH
RND: Ch 3, * sc in 3 dc, sc in ch 1 sp,
sc in 3 dc, make 2 post sts. Rep from *
joining as before. Fasten off.
HANDLE:
Using
#13 hook, ch 13.
Sc
in 2nd ch from hook, sc in rem 11 ch [12 sc], ch 1, turn.
NEXT
ROW: Sc in each sc, ch 1, turn.
Rep
this last row until handle measures 14”.
Fasten off.
Press
lightly on wrong side with damp cloth.
TOP
ZIPPER SECTION:
Crochet
around zipper as follows: using stiletto or sharp hook to make holes ¼” in from
edge of material, 38 sts along length of zipper, put in marker, 4 sts across
end, put in marker, 37 sts along other side, put in marker & 4 sts across
end, put in marker. Join with sl
st.
Cont
to work in sc, inc 1 st before & after markers every rnd until there are
same number of sts around outside as on top of bag. Do not break yarn.
Press
on wrong side with damp cloth.
LINING:
Cut
1 piece plastic same size as base.
Cut
1 piece for front, back & sides allowing for extra spread at top.
Encase
each piece of plastic in lining & sew together.
Insert
lining in bag & stitch to top.
Crochet
top zipper section in place.
Sew
handle to outside edges to form wrist strap.
