Vintage Mod 1970s Checkered Mini Sundress #1261
This simple-to-make sundress is worked in warm colors with rows of double crochet & is checker-boarded bottom & top. Waist & top of bodice are elasticized.

SIZE:
Directions are for Small [6-8] with changes for Medium [10-12] & Large [14-16] shown in brackets.

NOTE:
Size increases may also be made by increasing hook sizes &/or yarn weight.

MATERIALS:
Knitting Worsted Weight, 4 oz Skeins: 4 [5;5] Amber [A]; 1 [2;2] Orange [B]
1 Crochet Hook #H
1 Crochet Hook #I
2 yds Round Elastic

GAUGE/TENSION:
13 DC = 4”
5 ROWS = 3”
#H hook in patt & #I hook in solid color.

MEASUREMENTS:
Bust = 30 ½”-31 ½” [ 32 ½”-34”; 36”-38’]

NOTES:
When working with 2 colors, hold color not in use along top of last row; work sts over unused color to conceal it.

To change colors, work last st to last 2 lps on hk; work off last 2 lps with new color.

Carry unused color loosely along side edge.

TO INC 1 ST:
Work 2 sts in 1 st. Keep to checkered patt when inc.

BACK:
Beg at waist edge, with A & #H hk, CH 50[54;58].

1ST ROW: DC in 4th CH from hk [counts as 2 DC], DC in next 0[2;0] CH, * change to B, DC in next 4 CH, change to A, DC in next 4 CH, rep from * across, end 2[4;2] A DC = 48[52;56] DC. CH 3, turn each row, CH 3 always counts as 1st DC of next row.

2ND ROW: Sk 1st st, Dc in next 1[3;1] DC, * change to B, DC in next 4 
DC, change to A, DC in next 4 DC, rep from * across, end 2[4;2] A DC, change to B.

3RD ROW: SK 1st st, DC in next 1[3;1] DC, * change to A, Dc in next 4 DC, change to B, DC in next 4 DC, rep from * across, end 2[4;2] B DC.

4TH ROW: Rep 3rd row. Change to A.

5TH – 9TH ROWS: Work even in checkered patt.

10TH ROW: DC in 1st st [1 st inc], work in patt across, 2 DC in last st [1 st inc] = 50[54;58] DC.

11TH ROW: Work even in patt.

12TH ROW: Rep 10th row = 52[56;60] DC.

13TH & 14TH ROWS: Work even in patt. End off.

BODICE:
FRONT:
Work as for back.

NOTE:
Skirt is planned for 18” length. For longer or shorter skirt, add or subtract an even number of rows before starting border.

SKIRT:
1ST ROW: From RS, work along opp side of starting CH for back bodice, with A & #I hk, join yarn in 1st CH, CH3, DC in next 2 CH, * 2DC in next CH, DC in next 3 CH, rep from * across = 60[65;70] DC.

2ND – 6TH ROWS: Work even in DC.

7TH ROW: DC in 1st st, inc 2[2;0] DC evenly spaced across, 2 DC in last st = 64[69;72] DC.

8TH – 10TH ROWS: Work even.

11TH ROW: DC in 1st st, inc 2[4;2] DC evenly spaced across, 2 DC in last st.

12TH – 14TH ROWS: Work even.

15TH ROW: DC in 1st st, inc 2[3;2] DC evenly spaced across, 2 DC in last st = 72[80;80] DC.

16TH – 18TH ROWS: Work even.

19TH ROW: DC in 1st st, inc 2 DC evenly spaced across, 2 DC in last st = 76[84;84] DC.

20TH – 22ND ROWS: Work even.

23RD ROWS: Rep 19th row = 80[88;88] DC.

24TH ROW: Work even.

BORDER:
1ST ROW: Change to H hk. Sk 1st st, DC in next st, * change to B, DC in next 4 DC, change to A, DC in next 4 DC, rep from 8 across, end 2 A DC.

2ND – 6TH ROWS: Work even in patt. End off.

Work Front skirt in same way.

STRAPS: [MAKE 2]: 
With A & #H hk, make CH 13”[14”;15”] long.

Dc in 4th CH from hk & in each CH across, CH 3, sl st in 1st CH of starting CH, CH 3, DC in each CH on other side of starting CH. End off.

FINISHING:
Sew side seams & match patts.

From RS, with A & #H hk, work 1 row SC around bottom edge.

Work 1 row SC around top of bodice, working over elastic.

Adjust elastic to fit; fasten securely.

Cut elastic to waist meas less 2”; run thru 1st row on bodice. Fasten securely.

Sew shoulder straps in place.
