Vintage 1960s Mod Tri-Color Maxi Dress #1271

Scarlet, Navy & White stripes in an airy, zippered maxi dress. Simple to create in a mesh stitch. Short sleeves, side & front slits give ease of movement. Great cover-up for wear at the beach or pool.

SIZE:
Small & Medium.
Directions are for Small [8-10] with changes for Medium [12-14] in brackets.

MATERIALS:
Knitting Worsted, 4 oz Skeins: 3 [4] White [W]; 2 each of Navy [N] & Scarlet [S]
1 Aluminum Crochet Hook #H/8
1 Zipper 22”

MEASUREMENTS:
Body Bust = 31 ½”-32 ½” [34”-36”]
Finished Bust = 33” [37 ½”]

TENSION/GAUGE:
9 Meshes [M] = 5”
7 Rows = 4”

MESH [M] PATTERN:
1ST ROW: DC in 6th CH from hk, * CH 1, sk next CH, DC in next CH, rep from * across. CH 4, turn.

2ND ROW: Sk 1st DC, * DC in next DC, CH 1, rep from * across, end sk 1 CH of turning CH, DC in next CH. CH 4, turn.

Rep 2nd row for M patt.

BACK:
LEFT HALF:
Beg at lower edge with N,  H 54 [58].

Work in M patt on 25 [27] M, work 2 rows N, 2 rows W for 20 rows [5 W stripes compl].

Check gauge; piece should meas 14” [15”] wide.

Dec 1 M at beg of next row [side edge], then dec 1 M at same edge every 6th row 5 times more = 19 [21] M.

Keep to stripe patt, dec 1 M at side edge every 5th row 4 times = 15 [17] M.

Work even until 75 rows from start [1 row of 19th W stripe compl] or desired length to underarm.

SHAPE ARMHOLE:
Bind of 2 M at side edge of next row.

Dec 1 M at arm side every row 1 [2] times = 12 [13] M.

Work even until armhole meas 7 ½” [8”] above 1st row of armhole shaping.

SHAPE SHOULDER:
Bind off 2 [3] M at arm side of next row. End off.

RIGHT HALF:
Work with S instead of N, work same as left half [patt is reversible].

FRONT:
LEFT FRONT:
Work same as left back until armhole meas 4 ½” [5”] above 1st row of armhole shaping = 12 [13] M.

SHAPE NECK & SHOULDER:
Bind off 3 M at center edge of next row.

Dec 1 M at same edge every row 3 times = 6 [7] M.

Work even until armhole meas same as back.

Bind off 2 [3] M at armhole edge of next row. End off.

RIGHT FRONT:
Work same as left front, working with S instead of N.

SLEEVES:
RIGHT SLEEVE:
Beg at lower edge with S, CH 38 [42].

1ST ROW: DC in 6th CH from hk, * CH 1, sk next CH, DC in next CH, rep from * across = 17 [19] M. CH 4, turn.

2ND ROW: Sk 1st DC, DC in next DC, [CH 1, DC in next DC] twice, [CH 1, DC in CH-1 sp, CH 1, DC in DC] 11 [13] times, [CH 1, DC in next DC] twice, CH 1, sk 1 CH, DC in next CH of turning CH = 28 [32] M.

Work 2 rows W, 2 rows S, work until 7 rows from start, end 1st W row of 2nd W stripe.

SHAPE CAP:
Keep to color sequence, bind off 2 M each side of next row.

Dec 1 M each side every row 1 [2] times = 22 [24] M.

Work even for 5 [6] rows.

Dec 1 M each side of next 2 rows = 18 [20] M. End off.

LEFT SLEEVE:
Work same as for right sleeve, working with N instead of S.

FINISHING:
Weave center back seam, & match rows.

Leave 5 N or S stripes at lower side edges free for side slits, & sew side seams.

Sew shoulder & sleeve seams.

Gathering top of sleeve, sew in sleeves.

With W from RS, work 1 row SC around neck edge, easing in to desired fit.

With N, work 2 Sc in each sp, work 1 row SC along left front edge; with S, work 1 row SC along right front edge.

Beg at neck edge, sew in zipper.

Sew fronts tog below zipper to top of 6th W stripe from bottom.

With W, beg at lower front edge, & work 1 row SC across lower edge of 1 front, around side slit, across back, around other side slit, across lower edge of 2nd front. End off.

Steam press seams open flat.
