Infant’s Surplice Sweater with Butterfly Accent #B207

MATERIALS & SIZES:
1 Pair Knitting Needles UK #10/3.25mm/US #3
Two Medium Buttons
Patons Beehive Baby Wool
or
Patons Baby Wool with Nylon

SIZE A: 18” – 19” underarm - 2 ballsSIZE B: 20” – 21” underarm - 2 balls

NOTE: Instructions are for smaller size A. Larger size B is shown in brackets.

Length from top of shoulder:
SIZE A - 8½”
SIZE B - 9½”

Length of sleeve seam:
SIZE A – 6”
SIZE B – 7”

PATTERN STITCH:
WB = Work Butterfly by making 3 sts as follows: * insert point of right hand needle under 4 strands formed by dropped sts & K 1 st, * yo, then rep from * to * once.

GAUGE/TENSION:
8 sts = 1” width, meas over plain smooth fabric (ST ST = Stocking Stitch).

PATTERN:
RIGHT FRONT:
Cast on 53 [B-59] sts.

1ST ROW: * K1, P1, rep from * to last st, K1.

NEXT ROWS: Rep 1st row 5 times.

7TH ROW: K1, P1, K1, cast off 2 sts (P1, K1) 14 [B-16] times, cast off 2 sts, (P1, K1) 9 [B-10] times.

8TH ROW: (K1, P1) 9 [B-10] times, cast on 2 sts, (K1, P1) 14 [B-16] times, cast on 2 sts, K1, P1, K1.

NEXT ROWS: Rep 1st row 6 times.

NEXT ROW: (K1, P1) 3 times, (K5, inc once in next st) 7 times, K to end of row = 60 [B-66] sts.

NEXT ROW: K1, P to last 18 sts, P2tog tbl, P10, (P1, K1) 3 times.

BUTTERFLY BORDER:
** 1ST ROW: (K1, P1) 3 times, K3, K2tog, (yo) twice, K2tog tbl, K to end of row.

2ND ROW: K1, P to last 14 sts, P2tog tbl, drop yo's of prev row (yo) twice, P2tog, P2, (P1, K1) 3 times.

3RD ROW: (K1, P1) 3 times, K1, K2tog, drop yo's of prev row (yo) twice, K2tog tbl, K1, K2tog tbl, K to end of row.

4TH ROW: K1, P to last 12 sts, P2tog tbl, drop yo's of prev row (yo) twice, P2tog (P1, K1) 3 times.

5TH ROW: (K1, P1) 3 times, K1, drop yo's of prev row, cast on 3 sts, W.B., cast on 3 sts, K to end of row.

6TH ROW: K1, P to last 19 sts, P2tog tbl, P4, P2tog, P5 (P1, K1) 3 times.

NEXT ROWS: Keep continuity of patt as given from ** to ** dec once (inside border sts) as 
before in next row & every following 3rd row 15 times.

NEXT ROW: Work 1 row without shaping.

NEXT ROWS: Cast off 2 [B-4] sts at beg of row, then dec once at armhole edge in next 3 rows, AT SAME TIME dec once inside border sts in every 3rd row from prev dec 11 [B-13] times.

SHAPE SHOULDER:
1ST ROW: Cast off 9 [B-10] sts, work to end of row.

2ND ROW: Work across all sts

3RD ROW: Cast off 10 [B-11] sts, (P1, K1) 3 times.

NEXT ROWS: Work 14 rows in moss st on these 6 sts. Cast off.

LEFT FRONT:
Cast on 53 [B-59] sts.

1ST ROW: * K1, P1, rep from * to last st, K1.

NEXT ROWS: Rep 1st row 13 times.

NEXT ROW: K5 [B-K11] (inc once in next st, K5) 7 times, (P1, K1) 3 times = 60 [B-66] sts.

NEXT ROW: (K1, P1) 3 times, P10, P2tog, P to last st, K1.

BUTTERFLY BORDER:
** 1ST ROW: K to last 13 sts, K2tog (yo) twice, K2tog tbl, K3 (P1, K1) 3 times.

2ND ROW: (K,1, P1) 3 times, P2, P2tog tbl, drop yo’s of prev row (yo) twice, P2tog, P to last st, K1.

Keep continuity of patt as given from ** to ** work to corres with Right Front, work shaping at opposite ends of needle.

BACK:
Cast on 67 [B-75] sts.

1ST ROW: * K1, P1, rep from * to last st, K1.

NEXT ROWS: Rep 1st row 13 times.

NEXT ROW: K6 [B-K10], (inc once in next st, K5) 10 times, K to end of row = 77 [B-85] sts.

NEXT ROW: K1, P to last st, K1.

NEXT ROWS: Cont in plain smooth fabric (ST ST) until work meas same as Fronts up to armhole shaping, ending with P row.

NEXT ROWS: Cast off 2 [B-4] sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec once at each end of needle in every row until 67 [B-71] sts rem.

NEXT ROWS: Cont without shaping until armholes meas same as Front armholes.

SHAPE SHOULDERS:
1ST & 2ND ROWS: Cast off 9 [B-10] sts, work to end of row.

3RD & 4TH ROWS: Cast off 10 [B-11] sts, work to end of row. Cast off rem sts

SLEEVES:
Cast on 31 [B-35] sts.

1ST ROW: * K1, P1, rep from * to last st, K1.

NEXT ROWS: Rep 1st row 12 times.

14TH ROW: Inc once in 1st st, * P1, inc once in next st, rep from * to end of row = 47 [B-53] sts.

NEXT ROW: K.

NEXT ROW: K1, P to last st, K1.

NEXT ROWS: Cont in plain smooth fabric, inc once at each end of needle in 5th & every following 8th row until there are 55 [B-61] sts on needle.

NEXT ROWS: Cont without shaping until work meas 6” [B-7”] from start, end with P row.

NEXT ROWS: Cast off 2 [B-3] sts at beg of next 2 rows.

NEXT ROWS: Dec once at each end of needle in next & every alt row until 37 [B-41] sts rem, then in every row until 19 [B-23] sts rem.

NEXT ROW: * K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1. Cast off.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

FINISHING:
With slightly damp cloth & warm iron, press lightly.

Using flat seam, sew up shoulder, side & sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves, placing seams to side seams.

Join ends of front bands & sew in position across back of neck.

Sew on buttons to corres with buttonholes.

Press all seams.
