Infant’s Smocked Knit 3-Piece Set #B215
MATERIALS:
10 oz 4-Ply Knitting Worsted
AND
1/2 oz Contrast Color
1 Pair Knitting Needles #4
1 Pair Knitting Needles #6
1 Steel Crochet Hook #1

SWEATER BACK:
USE #6 NEEDLES:

Cast on 66 sts.

1ST ROW: P1, * K1, P2, rep from * across row, end with K1, P1 [RIGHT SIDE].

2ND ROW: K1, * P1, K2, rep from * across row, end with P1, K1.

Rep these 2 rows for patt.

Work in patt until piece meas 6 ½” total.

UNDERARM:
Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows [
ONCE EACH SIDE].

Dec 1 st at each side of work every other row 3 times.

Now work even until armhole meas 3 ½” above underarm bind off.

Bind off all sts loosely.

RIGHT FRONT:
USE #6 NEEDLES:

Cast on 36 sts & work in patt until piece meas same length as back up to underarm.

UNDERARM: [WRONG SIDE]:
Bind off 2 sts at beg of row once.

Dec 1 st at underarm edge every other row 3 times.

Work even till armhole meas 2 ¾” above underarm.

NECK SHAPING: [RIGHT SIDE]:
Bind off 9 sts once; dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 4 times.

When armhole meas same as back, bind off all sts loosely.

LEFT FRONT:
Work to corres to right one—bind off at opp sides.

SLEEVES:
USE #4 NEEDLES:

Cast on 40 sts & work in ribbing of K1, P for 1 ½”, INC TO 48 STS ON LAST ROW OF RIBBING.

CHANGE TO #6 NEEDLES:

Work in patt until sleeve meas 7 ½” total. Bind off loosely.

MAKE 2ND SLEEVE IN SAME WAY.

COLLAR:

USE #6 NEEDLES:

Cast on 69 sts, & work in ribbing of K1, P1, for 2 ½”.

Bind off very loosely, K the K sts, P the P sts.

FINISHING:
Sew shoulders & side seams.

Sew sleeves into armhole, match underarm seams.

CROCHETED EDGE: [RIGHT SIDE]:
USE #1 HOOK:

Tie yarn at neck edge on left front, & make 1 SC into each row [KEEP WORK FLAT] down to lower corner, 2 SC into corner st, SC across bottom of sweater [KEEP WORK FLAT]; 2  SC in corner st, work up right front to corres to left front. CH 1, turn.

2ND ROW: 1 SC in 1st st, * CH 2, sk 1, 1 SC next 5 sts; rep from * down right front; 1 SC in each st across bottom & up left front to neck edge. Break yarn.

Sew collar onto neck edge.

HOOD:
USE #4 NEEDLES:

Cast on 69 sts & work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 1” [NECK EDGE].

CHANGE TO #6 NEEDLES:

Work in patt until piece meas 7” total.

Fold in 2 & sew across along bound off edge.

FRONT TURN BACK:
Tie yarn just above ribbing at 1 side of front with right side facing.

USE #4 NEEDLES:

Pick up & K1 st in each row across front down to within ribbing at other side.

Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 1 ½”.

Bind off loosely, K the K & P the P sts.

Turn back & sew down along side edge.

MITTENS:
USE #4 NEEDLES:

Cast on 30 sts & work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 5 rows.

BEADING ROW: P1, * YO, K2TOG; rep from * across row, end with K2TOG, P1.

Work 5 rows more of ribbing.

CHANGE TO #6 NEEDLES:

Work in patt until piece meas 2 ½” above ribbing; end with 1st row of patt.

NEXT ROW: K1, P1, * K2TOG, P1, rep from * across row; end with P1, K1.

NEXT ROW: Work back as the sts are.

LAST ROW: K2TOG across row. Break yarn & leave 10”.

Thread darning needle & draw thru rem sts.

Fasten tightly on wrong side of work. Sew sides tog.

Make 2nd mitten same way.

TIES:
USE #1 HOOK:

With contrast color make CH of 15”.

Thread thru beading row & tie.

SMOCKING:
Use tapestry needle & contrast color; st firmly gathering 1st rib & 3rd rib as shown, finish off on wrong side.

** Do this on front of sweater only, bonnet & on 1 side of mittens.

** Cont smocking same way every 12th row.
