GAUGE:
Use larger needles & over stocking stitch parts of work: 7½ sts = 1”.

ABBREVIATIONS:
TBS = through back of sts.
RSF = right side facing.
MOSS ST = K1, p1 alternately on an uneven number of sts, but when working over an even number always work a k st over a k st of the previous row.
ST ST = stocking stitch (right side k, wrong side p).
GARTER ST = every row k
dc, UK double crochet/US single crochet

NOTE:
Fancy pattern used in this design requires number of stitches divisible by 18 plus 1.

FRONT:
Use larger needles, & cast on 145 sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work 8 rows in garter st.

NOW WORK IN PATT AS FOLLOWS:
1ST ROW: K7, * k2tog, yo, k1, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k13; rep from * end with k7 instead of k13.

2ND & EVERY ALTERNATE ROW: K2, * p15, k3; rep from * end with k2 instead of k3.

3RD ROW: K6, * k2tog, yo, k3, yo , sl 1, k1, psso, k11; rep from * end with k6 instead of k11.

5TH ROW: K5, * k2tog, yo, k5, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k9; rep from * end with k5.

7TH ROW: K4, * k2tog, yo, k7, yo, sl 1 , k1, psso, k7; rep from * end with k4.

Cont work on each right side row in k & all wrong side rows as 18th row, until armhole meas 2½” on straight.

SHAPE NECK (RSF):
K22, cast off 15, k22, Cont work on last 22 sts dec 1 st at neck edge on next 4 rows.

NEXT ROWS: Work straight until armhole meas 3½”. on straight. Cast off.

Rejoin wool to neck edge & work other side to corres.

BACK:
Work as for front, until waist ribbing is compl.

NEXT ROW: Divide for back opening: K32, turn & cast on 5 sts (for underlap). Leave rem 37 sts on a spare needle until required.

NEXT ROW: K5, p to end.

NEXT ROWS: Work 2 more rows in st st on these 37 sts, keep 5 sts at centre back in garter st as border.

SHAPE ARMHOLE:
Cast off 2 sts at beg of next row, then dec 1 st at this same edge on following 3 rows = 32 sts.

NEXT ROWS: Cont straight until armhole meas 3¼” on straight, end with right side row.

SHAPE NECK:
Cast off 13 sts, p to end.

NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 st at neck edge on following 2 rows. Cast off.

Rejoin wool at centre back (do not cast on 5 sts at this side) & work to corres with opposite side, make buttonhole when work meas 1” (and then at 1” intervals until there are 4 in all):
(rsf) K 3, wind wool twice around needle, k2tog, k to end.

On following row drop 1 made lp & k other.

SLEEVES: (BOTH ALIKE):
Use smaller needles, cast on 42 sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work 6 rows in k1, p1 rib.

Change to larger needles: K6, * k twice into each of next 2 sts, k1; rep from * until 6 sts rem, k twice into next st, k5  = 63 sts.

NEXT ROWS: Cont in st st until work meas 1¾”.

SHAPE TOP:
Dec. 1 st at both ends of every row until 19 sts rem.

Cast off, work 2 tog at both ends.

COAT:
BACK:

Work as for front of dress, until work meas 11½”.

DEC FOR WAIST:
Change to smaller needles: k2tog all along row but k3tog once in center of work instead of k2tog = 72 sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work in k1, p1 rib for 7 rows.

NEXT ROWS: Change to larger needles & work in st st for 4 rows.

SHAPE ARMHOLES:
Cast off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st at both ends of next 4 rows = 60 sts.

Work in st st without further shaping until armholes meas 3¾” on straight.

SHAPE NECK (RSF):
K21, cast off 18, k21.

NEXT ROWS: Cont on last 21 sts dec 1 st at neck edge on next 2 rows. Cast off.

Rejoin wool to neck edge & work other side to corres.

LEFT FRONT:
Use larger needles & cast on 77 sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work 8 rows in garter st.

Now work in patt with border of 6 garter sts as follows:
1ST ROW: K7, * k2tog, yo, k1, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k13, rep from * end with k11.

2ND & EVERY ALTERNATE ROW: K6, * p15, k3; rep from * end k2.

3RD ROW: K6, * k2tog, yo, k3, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k11; rep from * end k10.

5TH ROW: K5, * k2tog, yo, k5, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k9; rep from * to end.

7TH ROW: K4, * k2tog , yo, k7, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k7; rep from * end k 8.

DEC FOR WAIST:
Change to smaller needles, k3 tog, * (k2tog) 7 times, k3tog; rep from *until 6 sts rem, k6
= 39 sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work 7 rows in k1, p1 rib, still keep 6 sts at front edge in garter st.

NEXT ROWS: Change to larger needles & work in st st on main sts & garter st on border for 4 rows.

SHAPE ARMHOLE:
Cast off 2 sts at beg of next row, then dec 1 st at this edge on following 4 rows = 33 sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work without further shaping until armhole meas 3” on straight, end with right side row.

SHAPE NECK:
Cast off 10 sts at beg of next row, then dec 1 st at this same edge on every row until 19 sts rem.

NEXT ROWS: Work straight until armhole meas same as for back. Cast off.

RIGHT FRONT:
Work as for Left Front with border & all shaping at opposite ends of work, & make buttonhole in center of waist band as follows (rsf). K3, wind wool twice around needle, k2tog, work to end.

FOLLOWING ROW: Drop 1 made lp & k other.

Make 3 more buttonholes up front edge at evenly spaced intervals.

Meas these against opposite front already completed & arrange so that top buttonhole comes about ¼” from neck edge.

NOTE:
To work patt on this side just work end number of patt rows 1st & 1st number last.

The 1st patt row will beg with k11 & end with k7.

The 2nd row will beg with k2 & end with k6.

The 3rd row will beg with k10 & end with k6.

SLEEVES (BOTH ALIKE):
Use smaller needles, cast on 38 sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work 10 rows in k1, p1 rib.
Change to larger needles end work the next row thus: K6, * k twice into each of next 2 sts k1; rep from * until 5 sts rem, k5 = 56 sts.

NEXT ROWS: Cont in st st inc 1 st at both ends of every 10th row until there are 62 sts on needle.

Work straight until sleeve meas 6” (or length required).

SHAPE TOP:
Cast off 3 sts at beg of every row until 14 sts rem. Cast off.

COLLAR:
Use larger needles & cast on 75 sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work 6 rows in garter st

Now work in patt as for skirt of dress, excepting that there will be 1 extra st at each end of needle.

Thus 1st patt row will beg & end with k8, 2nd & every alt rows with k3. 3rd row with k7. 5th row with k6 & so on.

Work in patt until collar meas 2”, end with wrong side row.

K next row, work tog every 9th & 10th sts. Cast off.

SOAKERS:
BACK:
Use larger needles, cast on 25 sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work 4 rows in garter st.

NEXT ROW: Work buttonholes thus - K4, yo, k2tog, k6, yo, k2tog, k6, yo, k2tog, k3.

Cont in garter st, cast on 3 sts at beg of every row until there are 85 sts on needle.

Now work in rib patt as follows:
1ST ROW: K.

2ND ROW: P5, * k3, p15; rep from * end with p5 instead of 15.

Rep these last 2 rows until side seam meas 6½”, end with wrong side row.

SHAPE BACK:
1ST & 2ND ROWS: K until 8 sts rem, turn & patt until 8 sts rem, turn.

3RD & 4TH ROWS: K until 16 sts rem, turn & patt until 16 sts rem, turn.

5TH & 6TH ROWS: K until 24 sts rem, turn & patt until 24 sts rem, turn.

7TH & 8TH ROWS: K until 32 sts rem, turn & patt until 32 sts rem, turn.

NEXT ROW: K to end.

Now work 7 rows in k1, p1 rib, beg & end 1st row with p1.

RIBBONHOLES: k1, * yo, k2tog, p1, k1; rep from * to end.

NEXT ROWS: Work 5 more rows in rib, then cast off loosely in rib.

FRONT:
Use larger needles cast on 31 sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work 2 rows in garter st.

NEXT ROWS: Cont in garter st, caston 3 sts at beg of every row until there are 85 sts on needle.

NEXT ROWS: Work as for back until side seam meas 6½”.

Now work ribbing & ribbonholes as for neck & cast off loosely.

LEG BANDS:
Join side seams.

Use smaller needles & with rsf pick up & k78 sts evenly around leg opening.

NEXT ROWS: Work 6 rows in k1, p1 rib, make buttonhole at beg of 4th row (right leg) thus: rib 4, yo, work 2 tog, rib to end.

Cast off loosely in rib.

For left leg make buttonhole at END of 4th row thus: Rib until 5 sts rem, yo, work 2 tog, rib 3.

BONNET:
Use smaller needles, cast on 91 sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work 10 rows in garter st.

Change to larger needles & work in patt st as for beg of frock for 14 rows.

NEXT ROWS: Rep 10 patt rows twice more.

NEXT ROW: Work next right side row as for 5th patt row.

NEXT ROWS: Work in st st with 2 sts in garter st as borders at each end of work until piece meas 4½”, end with p row, & dec 3 sts evenly in last row = 88 sts.

SHAPE CROWN:
1ST ROW: * K9, k2tog; rep from * to end.

2ND & EVERY ALTERNATE ROW: P.

3RD ROW: * K8, k2tog; rep from * to end.

5TH ROW: * K7, k2tog; rep from * to end.

NEXT ROWS: Cont in this way, work 1 st less bet decs on every alt row until 2 sts are being knitted tog all along row.

Break wool, thread through rem sts & fasten off securely.

HELMET: (Left Ear Flap):
Use smaller needles cast on 2 sts.

1ST ROW: K twice into each st.

2ND ROW: K twice into 1st st, k1, k twice into next st, k1 (6 sts).

NEXT ROWS: Now work in garter st, inc 1 st at beg of every row until there are 27 sts on needle, then turn & cast on 4 sts & leave these 31 sts on spare needle until required.

Now work right ear-flap as follows:

Use smaller needles, cast on 5 sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work 3” in garter st.

NEXT ROWS: Cont in garter st, inc 1 st at beg of every row until there are 27 sts on needle.

NEXT ROWS: Cast on 4 sts at the beg of next row, k to end, then turn & cast on 29 sts at opposite end of needle, then work across sts for left ear flap, arrange so that 4 cast on sts are worked at end of needle = 91 sts .

NEXT ROWS: Work 10 rows in garter st across all sts.

NEXT ROWS: Change to larger needles & work in patt st as for beg of frock for 14 rows.

NEXT ROWS: Now work from 5th to 14th row incl, then work next right side row as for 5th row.

Now work in st st across all sts for 5 rows, dec 3 sts evenly in last row = 88 sts.

8TH ROW: K1, inc, k22, inc, k3, inc, k22, inc, k1.

10TH ROW: K1, inc, k24, inc, k3, inc, k24, inc, k1 (61 sts).

NEXT ROWS: K 9 rows without shaping.

START INSTEP SHAPING:
1ST ROW: K35, k2tog, turn.

2ND ROW: Sl 1, p9, p2tog, turn.

3RD ROW: Sl 1, k9, k2tog, turn.

4TH ROW: Sl 1, p9, p2tog, turn.

NEXT ROWS: Rep these last 2 rows until 39 sts rem, then turn & k to end of row.

NEXT ROW: P across all sts.

RIBBONHOLES: k1 * yo, k2tog; rep from * to end.

NEXT ROWS: Work 4 rows in k1, p 1 rib.

NEXT ROWS: Work 20 rows in garter st. Cast off.

Make another bootee same.

MITTENS:
Use larger needles, cast on 36 sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work 10 rows in garter st.

NEXT ROWS: Work 6 rows in st st.

NEXT ROWS: Change to smaller needles & work 2 more rows in st st.

RIBBONHOLES:
K2, * yo, k2tog; rep from * to end.

NEXT ROW: P.

NEXT ROWS: Change back to larger needles & work 2¼” in st st.

SHAPE TOP:
1ST ROW: (RSF) k1, k2tog tbs, k12, k2tog, k2, k2tog tbs, k12, k2tog, k1.

2ND & EVERY ALTERNATE ROW: P.

3RD ROW: k1, k2tog tbs, k10, k2tog, k2, k2tog tbs, k10, k2tog, k1.

5TH ROW: k1, k2tog tbs, k8, k2tog , k2, k2tog tbs, k8, k2tog, k1.

Fold work in half (right sides inside) & cast off from both needles tog.

Make another mitten the same way.

FINISHING:
Press work lightly with warm iron over damp cloth, omit ribbings.

DRESS:
Join shoulder, side & sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves.

Secure underlap at back waist.

Work row of SC around neck, then work P edge as follows:
* 1 SC into 1st st, ch 3, join by SC into 1st of ch 3, 1 SC, sk 1 st, rep from * to end.

Press seams, & sew on buttons.

Thread ribbon through waist.

COAT:
Join shoulder, side & sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves.

Join collar to neck edge, allow for half of borders to overlap at center front.

Press seams, & sew on buttons.

SOAKERS:
Sew on buttons to crotch.

Press seams.

Thread ribbonholes with ribbon, elastic or crocheted chain.

TO MAKE CROCHETED CHAIN:
Use double wool, crochet sufficient length of chain, thread through holes & finish off ends with pom poms or small tassels.

BONNET:
Join back seam.

Sew on ribbons.

HELMET:
Join back seam.

Work row of SC around edges, making ch lp on chin strap to fasten.

Sew on button.

BOOTEES:
Join leg & foot seams, reverse back seam for turn over top.

Thread with ribbon or crocheted chain.

DO NOT PRESS BOOTEES .

MITTENS:
Join seams.

Press & thread with ribbons or crocheted chain.
