Vintage 1970s Strapless Top & Jacket Set #1402

MATERIALS:
TOP:
Sirdar Spree, 50 gm Balls:
1st color [cc1] : 2 [3-3-3] Balls
2nd color [cc2] : 1 [1-1-1] Balls
3rd color [cc3] : 1 [1-1-1] Balls
4th color [cc4] : 1 [1-1-1] Balls
1 Pair Milward Knitting Needles #9/3.75
1 Milward Tapestry Needle

MEASUREMENTS:
Bust: 80 [85-90-95] cm = 31” [33”-35”-37”], meas 80 [85-90-95] cm = 31” [33”-35”-37”]
Length: 32 [32-32-32] cm = 12 ½” [12 ½”-12 ½”-12 ½”

TENSION:
24 Sts = 10 cm [4”] in width on st st

BACK & FRONT [BOTH ALIKE]:
Use cc1, cast on 98 [104-110-116] sts.

Work in st st until work meas 21 cm [8”] from beg, end with p row & 6 sts evenly across last row = 92 [98-104-110] sts.

Work 42 rows garter st in stripes on rows each cc2, cc3 & cc4.

Use cc1, work 3 rows garter st. Cast off loosely.

KNOT:
Use cc1, cast on 5 sts.

1ST ROW: K.

2ND ROW: K 1, p 3, k 1.

Rep last 2 rows 9 times. Cast off.

FINISHING:
DO NOT PRESS.

Use back st & join side seams.

Sew 1 end of knot to last row of st st & other end in same place on inside of top.

JACKET:

MEASUREMENTS:
Bust: 80 [85-90-95] cm = 31” [33”-35”-37”], meas 85 [90-95-100] cm = 33” [35”-37”-39”]
Length: 55 [55-56-56] cm = 21 ½ ” [21 ½”-22”-22”]
Sleeve seam: 16 [16-16-16] cm = 6” [6”-6”-6”]

TENSION:
24 Sts = 10 cm [4”] in width over st st

BACK:
Use 3.75 needles & cc1, cast on 105 [111-117-123] sts.

Work 3 rows garter st [1st row is WS].

Use cc2, work 14 rows st st [beg with k row].

Use cc1, work 2 rows garter st.

Rep last 16 rows, use cc3 in place of cc2.

Rep last 16 rows, use cc4 in place of cc3.

Last 48 rows form patt.

Cont in patt until work meas 36 cm [14”] from beg, work last row on WS.

SHAPE ARMHOLES:
Keep patt correct, cast off 7 [8-9-10] sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec at each end of next & alt rows until 77 [79-81-83] sts rem.

Work 47 [45-47-45] rows.

SHAPE SHOULDERS:
Cast off 8 sts at beg of next 4 rows, then 8 [9-9-9] sts at beg of foll 2 rows.

Cast off rem 29 [29-31-33] sts.

LEFT FRONT:
Use 3.75 needles & cc1, cast on 49 [52-55-58] sts.

Work in patt as for back until there are 34 rows less than back to underarm.

SHAPE FRONT SLOPE:
Dec at end of next & foll 8th rows until 44 [47-50-53] sts rem.

Work 1 row.

SHAPE ARMHOLE:
Cast off 7 [8-9-10] sts at beg of next row.

Dec at armhole edge in alt rows 7 [8-9-10] times, AT SAME TIME dec at front edge in 8th [8th-6th-6th] & foll 10th [10th-10th-8th] rows 6 [6-6-8] times in all, size 90 cm [35”] only: then in foll 8th row once = 24 [25-25-25] sts.

Work 3 [3-1-3] rows.

SHAPE SHOULDER:
Cast off 8 sts at beg of next row & foll alt row.

Work 1 row. Cast off.

RIGHT FRONT:
Work to corres with left front.

SLEEVES:
Use 3.75 needles & cc1, cast on 77 [81-85-89] sts.

Work in patt as for back until work meas 16 cm [6”] from beg, work last row on WS.

SHAPE TOP:
Keep patt correct, cast off 4 [4-5-5] sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec at each end of next & alt rows until 37 [45-41-49] sts rem, then in every row until 15 sts rem. Cast off.

FRONT BANDS [MAKE 2]:
Use 2.75 needles & cc1, cast on 147 [149-151-153] sts.

1ST ROW: K 2, * p 1, k 1, rep from * to last st, k 1.

2ND ROW: K 1, * p 1, k 1, rep from * to end.

Rep 1st & 2nd rows 4 times. Cast off loosely in rib.

FINISHING:
DO NOT PRESS.

Use back st, join side, shoulder & sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves.

Sew front bands in place, join with flat seam at centre back neck.
