Vintage 1966 Mod Shell Sweater & Bag #1407

Made from motifs, summer top & matching drawstring bag in crisp pink & white cotton are cool & comfortable.

MATERIALS:
TOP:
6 oz Pink, 3 oz White Strutts Milford Knitting Cotton #8
1 Crochet Hook #14 for 32”-34” Bust
1 Crochet Hook #13 for 34”-36” Bust
BAG:
7 oz Pink, 3 oz White Strutts Milford Knitting Cotton #4
1 Crochet Hook #11

MEASUREMENTS:
Bust = 32”-34” or 34”-36”

TENSION:
1 Motif = approx 2 ¾” on #13 hk, or 2 ½” on #14 hk.
The completed top takes 108 motifs.
The completed bag takes 40 motifs.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
DC [UK] = SC [US]
TR [UK] = DC [US]

MOTIF:
With pink & #14 hk for small size, #13 for large, CH 6. Join into ring with sl st.

1ST RND: 1 DC in ring, 3 CH to stand for 1 TR, 3 TR in ring, remove hk from last TR, insert in top of 3 CH & draw lp of last TR thru [cluster], * 2 CH, 4 TR in ring, remove hk from last TR & insert in 1st of 4 TR, draw lp of last TR thru, rep from * 6 times, 2 CH, join to 3 CH of 1st cluster with sl st. [8 clusters]

2ND RND: * 1 DC in top of cluster, 1 DC in next sp, rep from * to end of rnd, join with sl st to 1st DC. [16 DC].

3RD RND: 4 CH, 1 TR in next DC, 1 CH, * 1 TR, 1 CH, 1 TR, 1 CH, 1 TR in next DC [corner], 1 CH, 1 TR in each of next 3 DC, rep from * twice, 1 CH, 1 TR, 1 CH, 1 TR, 1 CH, 1 TR in next DC [corner], 1 CH, 1 TR in next DC, 1 CH, join to 3rd of 1st 4 CH with sl st, join in white cotton with this sl st.

4TH RND: 1 DC in 1stt sp, 1 CH, 1 DC in next sp, 1 CH, 1 D C in next sp, 2 CH, 1 DC in next sp, cont work same, make sure that 2 CH are worked over centre TR of corner grp, join with sl st.

5TH RND: 4 CH, 1 TR in next sp, 1 CH, 1 TR in next sp, 1 CH, * 1 TR, 1 CH, 1 TR, 1 CH, 1 TR in 2 CH sp at corner, 1 CH, 1 TR in each of next 4 sps, rep from * until all corners have been worked, 1 CH, 1 TR in each of next 2 sps, join to 3rd of 4 CH with sl st, join in pink cotton with this sl st.

6TH RND: 1 DC in 1st sp, 1 CH, 1 DC in each of next 3 sps, 2 CH, 1 DC in next sp, cont as 4th rnd. Fasten off.

FINISHING:
Sew motifs tog on RS, following chart.

Squares marked X form shoulder.

EDGINGS:
LOWER EDGING:
Join pink cotton to 1 CH sp & work 3 rnds as follows: * 1 DC in next sp, 1 CH, 1 DC in next sp, rep from *.

4TH RND: Work from left to right, 1 CH, 1 DC in last sp, * 1 CH, 1 DC in next sp, rep from * to end. This rnd forms a rolled edge.

Work armholes & neckline in same way, but omit 1 CH at corners.

BAG:
Work 40 motifs, same as top.

Sew tog as shown in chart.

Fold in half & st across bottom & up side.

TOP EDGING:
Join pink cotton at side seam & work 1 TR in each st around top, work 18 TR to each motif & 1 TR at join. Join with sl st.

NEXT RND: 3 CH, 1 TR in next TR, 2 CH, sk 2 TR, * 1 TR in each of next 12 TR, 2 CH, sk 2 TR, 1 TR in each of next 3 TR, 2 CH, sk 2 TR, rep from * to last TR, 1 TR in last TR. Join with sl st.

NEXT RND: 3 CH, 1 TR in next st, * sk 1 st, 1 DC in next st, sk 1 st, 5 TR in next st, rep from * around top to last st, 1 TR in last st, join with sl st. 

Fasten off.

CORDS:
Use 4 strands cotton, work CH approx 24” long.

Make 2nd CH in same way.

Thread thru holes & knot ends.
