Vintage 1970s Mod Surplice Halter Top #1246
SIZE:
Directions are for Small [6-8]. 
Changes for Medium [10-12] & Large [14-16] are in brackets.

MATERIALS:
Sport Yarn: 2 – 2oz Skeins White [W]; 1 Skein Each of Rose [R] & Green [G]
1 Steel Crochet Hook #1
½ yd Green Ribbon 1” Wide

GAUGE/TENSION:
5  DC = 1”
2 Rows= 1”

MEASUREMENTS:
Bust = 30 ½” – 31 ½” [32 ½” – 34”; 36” – 38”]

NOTE:
Halter is worked from top to lower edge.

TO INC 2 DC:
AT BEG OF ROW, CH 3 [counts as 1 DC], 2 DC in 1st DC; AT END OF ROW, 3 DC in top of CH 3.

TO INC 1 DC:
AT BEG OF ROW, CH 3 [counts as 1 DC], DC in 1st DC; AT END OF ROW, 2 DC in top of CH 3.

BACK:
1ST HALF:
Beg at upper edge [see Note], with W, CH 4.

1ST ROW: DC in 4th CH from hk. Turn each row.

2ND ROW: CH 3 [counts as 1 DC], DC in 1st DC, 2 DC in top of turning CH = 4 DC.

3RD ROW: Inc 2 DC [see To Inc 2 DC] at beg & end of row = 8 DC.

4TH ROW: Inc 1 DC [see To Inc 1 DC] at beg & end of row = 10 DC.

Rep last 2 rows 3 [4-4] times = 28 [34-34] DC.

FOR SMALL SIZE ONLY: Rep 4th row = 30 DC.

FOR LARGE SIZE ONLY: Rep 3rd row = 38 DC.

Check gauge; last row should meas 6” [6 ¾” – 7 ½”] wide. Cut yarn.

2ND HALF:Work same as for 1st half; DO NOT CUT YARN at end of last row. Turn.

JOIN WORK:
NEXT ROW: CH 3, 2 DC in 1st  DC, DC in each  DC across, DC in top of turning CH; work across 1st half, DC in each  DC across, 3 DC in top of turning CH = 64 [72-80] DC. Turn.

Work in DC, inc 2 DC each side every row 3 times = 76 [84-92] DC.

NEXT ROW: With W, CH 3, sk 1st DC, DC in each DC across, DC in top of CH 3 = 76 [84-92] DC.

Rep last row, work 4 more rows of W, 2 rows G, 3 rows W, 3 rows R. End off.

FRONT:
1ST HALF:
Beg at upper edge, CH 6.

1ST ROW: DC in 4th CH from hk, CH 1, 2 DC in last CH – 4 DC, count 3 CH as 1 DC. Turn each row.

2ND ROW: CH 3 [counts as 1 DC], DC in 1st DC, DC in next DC, [DC, CH 1, DC] in CH-1 sp, DC in next DC, DC in top of CH 3 = 7 DC.

3RD ROW: CH 3, DC in 1st DC, DC in  each DC across,  work [DC, CH 1, DC] in center CH-1 sp = 10 DC.

9TH ROW: CH 3, DC in 1st DC, DC in each st across, work DC in CH-1 sp, 2 DC in top of CH-3 = 28 DC.

Work in DC, inc 1 DC each side every row 6 [7-8] times = 40 [42-44] DC.

Mark beg of last row for center edge.

On 2nd Half, mark end of last row for center edge.

Inc 1 st at center edge of next row, then every row 4 times = 45 [47-49] DC.

Cont to inc 1 st at center edge every row, work 2 rows G, 3 rows W, 3 rows R = 53 [55-57] DC. End off.

2ND HALF:
Work same as for 1st Half, reverse shaping.

FINISHING:
Run in yarn ends on wrong side.

ARMHOLE EDGING:
From
RIGHT SIDE, with R, work 2 rows  DC on each armhole edge of back & fronts.

Sew side seams.

Beg at lower right front edge, with R, sl st up right front edge, CH 28 for strap, sl st in top of right back edge, sl st around back neck edge, CH 28 for strap, sl st in top of left front edge, sl st down left front edge. End off.

RIGHT BAND:
Join R with DC in back lp of 1st sl st at lower right front edge, DC in back lp of each sl st & CH up front edge, strap CH & down back edge, end center back. Turn.

NEXT ROW: CH 3, sk 1st 2 DC, DC in each DC. End off. Join R with DC in back lp of 1st sl st at center back neck edge, sk next sl st, DC in back lp of each sl st & CH, end lower left front edge. Turn.

NEXT ROW: CH 3, sk 1st DC, DC in each DC to within last 2 DC, sk next DC, DC in last DC. End off, leave long end for sewing.

Thread needle; lap left back band over right back band; tack in place.

Cut ribbon to fit back waistband.

Face G rows with ribbon.

TIES: [MAKE 2]:
With G, CH 50 [52-54].

DC in 3rd CH from hk & in each CH across. CH 3, turn.

NEXT ROW: DC in each DC across. End off.

Sew tie to Green stripe at right front edge.

Sew 2nd tie to Green stripe at left side seam.
