Vintage 1970s Cardigan, Pullover & Scarf 3-Piece set #1248
SIZE:
CARDIGAN:
Small [6-8], Medium [10-12], & Large [14-16].
Directions are for size Small with changes for Medium & Large in brackets.

PULLOVER: 
Directions are for size 6-8 with changes for 10, 12, 14 & 16 in brackets.

NOTE:
Size increases may be made by increasing hook sizes & yarn weight.

MATERIALS:
CARDIGAN:
Knitting Worsted, 4 oz skeins: 2 [2-3] each of Teal Blue [A], White [B], Rust [C], & Pale Rust [D]
1  Crochet Hook Size I
5 Buttons
SCARF:
Knitting Worsted, 4 oz skeins: 1 each of Cardigan Colors
1  Crochet Hook Size I

PULLOVER:
Knitting Worsted, 4 oz skeins: 2 [2-3-3] White [MC]; few yds of Teal Blue, Contrast Color[CC]
1  Crochet Hook Size I

GAUGE/TENSION:
CARDIGAN:
11 SC = 4”;  18  Rows = 5”;  Pattern = Multiple of 5 Sts Plus 1

PULLOVER:
7 Sts = 2”;  6 Rows Patt = 2”

MEASUREMENTS:
CARDIGAN:
Bust = 30 ½” – 31 ½” [32 ½” – 34”; 36” – 38”]
Blocked Bust [Closed] = 32” [34” - 36”; 38” - 40”]

SCARF:
8” x 55”

PULLOVER:
Bust = 30 ½” – 31 ½” [32 ½” – 34” -  36” – 38”]
Blocked Bust [Closed] = 32” [34” - 36” – 38” - 40”]

PATTERN:
1ST ROW: [
RIGHT SIDE]: With A, SC in 2nd CH from hk & in each rem CH. CH 1, turn each row.

2ND – 6TH ROWS: With A, SC in each SC across.

7TH ROW: With B, * SC in next SC, long SC in next SC on 2nd row below, long SC in next SC on 3rd row below, long SC in next SC  on 4th row below, long SC in next SC on 5th row below, rep from * across, end SC in last SC.

8TH – 12TH ROWS: With B, SC in each SC across.

13TH ROW: With C, * long SC in next SC on 5th row below, long SC in next SC on 4th row below, long SC in next SC  on 3rd row below, long SC in next SC on 2nd row below, SC in next SC, rep from * across, end SC in last st.

14TH – 18TH ROWS: With C, SC in each SC across.

19TH – 24TH ROWS: With D, rep 7th - 12th rows.

25TH ROW: With A, rep 13th row.

Rep 2nd – 25th rows for patt.

TO DEC 1 ST: Pull up lp in each of 2 sts, YO & thru 3 lps on hk.

TO INC 1 ST: Work 2 SC in same st.

TO BIND OFF: AT BEG OF ROW, sl st across specified sts; AT END OF ROW, leave specified number of sts unworked.

CARDIGAN:
BACK:
Beg at lower edge, with A, CH 47 [52-57].

Work in patt on 46 [51-56] sts until piece meas20” from start or desired length to underarm.  

Check gauge; piece should meas 16” [18”-20”] wide.

SHAPE ARMHOLES:
Keep to patt, bind off 2 [3-3] sts each side of next row, then dec 1 st each side every row 2 [2-3] times  = 38 [41-44] sts.

Work even until armholes meas 7 ½” [8” – 8 ½”] above 1st row of armhole shaping.

SHAPE SHOULDERS:
Keep to patt, bind off 3 sts each side every row twice, 4 [5-6] sts once = 18 [19-20] sts. End off.

POCKET LININGS: [MAKE 2]:
Beg at lower edge, with A, CH 15 [17-19].

1ST ROW: SC in 2nd CH from hk & in each rem CH = 14 [16-18] SC. CH 1, turn.

2ND ROW: SC in each SC across. CH1, turn.

Rep 2nd row until piece meas 5” from start. End off.

RIGHT FRONT:
Beg  at lower edge, with A, CH 22 [27-32.

Work in patt on 21[26-31] SC for 26 rows, end patt 2nd row [center edge].

JOIN POCKET:
NEXT ROW: With A, SC in each of next 6 [7-8] SC; with
WRONG SIDE of last row on pocket facing WRONG SIDE of front, SC in each SC across pocket, sk next 14 [16-18] SC on front, SC in rem 1 [3-5] SC on front = 21 [26-31] SC.

Keep to patt, work even until piece meas 18” from start.

SHAPE NECK & ARMHOLE: 
Dec 1 st at center edge of next row, then dec 1 st at same  edge every 4th[4th – 3rd ] row 6 [9-12] times more; AT SAME TIME, when piece meas  same as back to underarm, bind off 2 [3-3] sts at arm side of next row, then  dec 1 st at arm side every row 2 [2-3] times = 10 [11-12] sts.
Work even in nec, until armhole meas same as back.

SHAPE SHOULDER:
Bind off 3 sts at arm side every row twice= 4 [5-6] sts rem. End off.

LEFT FRONT:
Work same as for right front for 26 rows, end patt 2nd row [side edge].

JOIN POCKET:
NEXT ROW: SC in each of 1 [3-5] SC; with
WRONG SIDE of last row on pocket lining facing WRONG SIDE of front, SC in each SC across pocket, sk next 14n[16-18] sts on front, SC in rem 6 [7-8] SC = 21 [26-31] SC.

Compl same as for right front, reverse shaping.

SLEEVES:
Beg at lower edge, with C, CH 22 [22-27].

Work in patt on 21 [21-26] sts, follow same color sequence as back, inc 1 st each side every 2 ½” [2” – 2 ½”] 6 [7-6] times, work added  sts into patt = 33 [35-38] sts.

Work even until piece meas about 17” from start, end same patt row as back underarm. 

Check gauge; piece above last inc row should meas 12” [12 ½” – 13 ½”] wide.

SHAPE CAP:
Keep to patt, bind off 2 [3-3]  sts each side of next row, then dec 1 st each side every other row 6 [7-8] times, every row 3 times= 11 [9-10] SC rem. End off.

FINISHING:
Run in yarn ends on
WRONG SIDE. With backstitch, sew shoulder seams.

Sew in sleeves; sew side & sleeve seams.

Sew pocket linings to WRONG SIDE.

From RIGHT SIDE, with A, work 1 rnd SC around lower edge of each sleeve.

FRONT EDGING:
From
RIGHT SIDE, join A in lower front corner. 

Keep work flat, work 1 row SC up front, around neck, down other front, end lower edge. CH 1, turn each row.

2ND ROW: SC in each SC.

With pins, mark position of 4 buttonholes evenly spaced on right front edge; 1st pin in 6th SC from lower edge, last pin in 3rd SC below start of neck shaping.

3RD ROW: [BUTTONHOLES]: * SC in each SC to within 1 SC of pin, CH 2, sk 2 SC, SC in next SC, rep from * 4 times, compl row.

4TH ROW:  SC in each SC& CH across. End off.

Sew on buttons.

SCARF:
With A, CH 22.

Work in patt as for cardigan until piece meas about 55” from start, end on patt 6th row. End off.

From RIGHT SIDE, with A, work 1 row SC across each long edge, be careful to keep work flat.

FINISHING:
Run in yarn ends on
WRONG SIDE.

PULLOVER:
BACK:
With MC, CH 15 [15-16-16-16].

RIBBING: [WORKED FROM SIDE SEAM TO SIDE SEAM]:
1ST ROW: SC in 2nd CH from hk & in each rem CH = 14 [14-15-15-15] SC. CH 1, turn each row.

2ND ROW: SC in back lp of each SC across.

Rep 2nd row until piece when slightly stretched meas14” [14 ½” – 15” – 15 ½” – 16”] from start. CH 1, DO NOT TURN.

Cont along side edge of ribbing, work 55 [59-63-67-71] SC. CH 1, turn.

PATTERN:
1ST ROW: SC in 1st SC, * CH 1, sk next SC, SC in next SC, rep from * across = 28 [30-32-34-36] SC. CH 1, turn.

2ND – 5TH ROWS: SC in 1st SC, * CH 1, SC in next SC, rep from * across. CH1, turn.

6TH ROW: CH 3 [COUNTS AS1 DC], sk 1st SC, * DC  in CH-1 sp, DC in SC, rep from * across = 55 [59-63-67-71]  DC. CH 1, turn.

7TH ROW: SC in 1st DC, * CH 1, sk next DC, rep from * across = 28 [30-32-34-36] SC.

Rep 2nd – 7th rows for patt twice.

Rep 2nd row.

Check gauge; piece above ribbing should meas 16” [17”-18”-19”-20”] wide.

SHAPE ARMHOLES:
Keep to patt, bind off 4 [6-4-6-4] sts each side of next row, then 2 sts each side every row 1 [1-2-2-3] times = 43 [43-47-47-51] sts.

Work even until armholes meas7” [7 ½” – 7 ½” – 8” – 8”] above 1st armhole shaping row.

SHAPE SHOULDERS & NECK:
Keep to patt, work across11 [11-13-13-13] sts, turn.

Bind off4 sts at arm side of next 2 rows = 3 [3-5-5-5] sts. End off.

Join MC in 11th [11th – 13th – 13th – 13th] st from arm side of last long row.

Keep to patt, work 1 row even, end arm side.

Bind off 4 sts at arm side of next 2 rows.  End off.

FRONT:
Work ribbing same as for back.

Work patt same as for back to end of patt 7th row, rep 2nd- 7th rows once, then 2nd – 5th rows.

DIVIDE FOR V-NECK:
CH 3 [
COUNTS  AS 1 DC] sk 1st SC, work in patt until 24 [26-28-30-32] DC  from start; hold back last lp on hk, work DC in each of next 3 sts, YO & thru 4 lps on hk [2 DC DEC], drop yarn; with another strand of MC, make lp on hk, sk next st [CENTER ST]; hold back last lp on hk, DC in each of next 3 sts, YO & thru 4 lps on hk, DC in each st across = 25[27-29-31-33] sts each side.

Keep to patt, work 1 row even.

Bind off 2 sts at neck edge of next row, then bind off 2 sts at same edge every 7th row 3 [3-3-3-4] times more; AT SAME TIME, when piece meas same as back to underarm, bind off 4 [6-4-6-4] sts each arm side of next row, then bind off 2 sts each arm side every row 1  [1-2-2-3] times = 11 [11-13-13-13] sts each  side.

Work even until armholes meas same as back.

SHAPE SHOULDERS:
Keep to patt, bind off 4 sts each arm side every row twice. End off.

FINISHING:
With backstitch, sew shoulder & side seams.

From RIGHT SIDE, with MC, work 1 rnd SC around each armhole, hold in to desired fit.

NECK EDGING:
Join MC at center front.

1ST RND: From RIGHT SIDE, work 90 [90-95-95-100] SC around neck edge, end center front. CH 1, turn.

2ND RND: Pull up lp in each of next 2 SC, YO & thru 3 lps on hk [1 SC DEC], SC in each SC to within last 2 SC, pull up lp in each of next 2 SC, YO &  thru 3 lps on hk [1 SC DEC]. CH 1, turn.

3RD & 4TH RNDS: Rep 2nd rnd = 84 [84-89-89-94] SC. Cut MC; join CC.

5TH RND: [RIGHT SIDE]: * SC in next SC, long SC in next SC on 2nd row below, long SC in next SC on 3rd row below, long SC in next SC on 4th row below, long SC in base of next SC on 1st row, rep from * to left shoulder seam, ** long SC in next SC on 4th row below, long SC in next SC on 3rd row below, long  SC in next SC on 2nd row below, SC in next SC, long SC in base of next SC on 1st row, rep from ** to center front, end last rep SC in last SC. CH 1, turn.

6TH RND: Sl st in each st. End off.

Weave center front neckband tog.
