1970s Mod Squares & Stripes Mini Dress & Beret #1309

This mod mini dress & beret will work up quickly. A giant afghan square motif gives a touch of today’s folk trend to this sleeveless shift. Bold stripes on the yoke, skirt, & beret are in chain & double crochet stitches.

SIZE:
Small [8-10] & Medium [12-14].
Directions are for Small with changes for Medium in brackets.

NOTE:
Needles & gauge determine size.

MEASUREMENTS:
Body Bust = 31 ½” – 32 ½” [34”-36”]
Finished Bust = 33” [37”]

MATERIALS:
Bernat Berella Germantown, 2 oz Balls:
2 Each of Natural [A], Citron [B], Camel [C], Caramel [D] & Brown [E]
1 Crochet Hook #3-4/F for Small Size
1 Crochet Hook #5/G for Medium Size
[UK Size #8 or #7]

GAUGE/TENSION:
Size F Hook:
5 Sts = 1” ; 2 Rows = 1”

Size G Hook:
9 Sts = 2” ; 7 Rows = 4”

DRESS:
BACK: BODICE:
Beg at center of square with E, CH 7, join with sl st into ring.

1ST RND: CH 3 [count as 1 DC], 23 DC in ring. Join with sl st in top of TCH. Turn each rnd.

2ND RND: CH 4 [count as 1 DC, CH 1], DC bet starting CH & DC, * [CH 1, DC bet next 2 DC] 5 times, CH 1, corner of DC, CH 1, DC bet next 2 DC, rep from * twice, end [CH 1, DC bet next 2 DC] 5 times, CH 1, sl st in 3rd CH of starting CH = 7 DC bet 4 CH-1 corners.

3RD RND: CH 4 [count as DC, CH 1], DC in joining st, * [CH 1, DC in next CH-1 sp] 6 times, CH 1, corner of DC, CH 1, DC in corner CH-1 sp, rep from * twice, end [CH 1, DC in next CH-1 sp] 6 times, CH 1, sl st in 3rd CH of starting CH = 8 DC bet 4 CH-4 corners.

4TH RND: With A, rep 3rd rnd, work 7 DC bet corners [instead of 6 DC] = 9 DC bet 4 CH-1 corners.

5TH RND: With C, CH 4 [count as DC, CH 1] DC in joining st [half corner], * [CH 1, DC in next CH-1 sp] 8 times, corner of [CH 1, DC] 4 times in corner CH-1 sp, rep from * around, end last rep half corner of CH 1, [DC, CH 1] twice in CH-1 sp before joining st, sl st in 3rd CH of starting CH =  4 DC in each corner CH-1 sp.

6TH RND: Rep 5th rnd, work 11 DC bet corners & [DC, CH 1] 4 times in each corner CH-1 sp.

7TH RND: With A, rep 5th rnd, work 14 DC bet corners & [DC, CH 1] 4 times in each corner CH-1 sp.

8TH RND: With D, rep 5th rnd, work 17 DC bet corners.

9TH RND: Rep 5th rnd, work 20 DC bet corners.

NEXT ROW: With A, make lp on hk, work half corner of DC, CH 1, DC in center CH-1 sp of any corner, [CH 1, DC] in each CH-1 sp to next corner, end half corner of DC, CH 1, DC in CH-1 sp of corner = 27 DC.

Mark this row for lower edge of square & turn.

NEXT ROW: CH 4, DC in 1st CH-1 sp, * CH 1, DC in next CH-1 sp, rep from * across, end DC, CH 1, DC in last sp = 28 DC. Fasten off.

NEXT ROW: With D, make lp on hk, beg at upper left corner of square, work half corner of CH 4, DC in corner CH-1 sp, work [CH 1, DC] in each CH-1 sp down left side edge of square, work CH 1, DC in side of A row at lower left side edge, work corner of [CH 1, DC] 4 times in 1st sp at lower edge, work in patt across lower edge, corner of [ch 1, dc] 4 times in last sp at right lower edge, work CH 1, DC in side of next A row at lower right edge, work CH 1, DC in each CH-1 sp up right side edge, work half corner of DC, CH 1, DC in corner CH-1 sp at upper right corner; DO NOT work across upper edge of square. Fasten off. Join B.

NEXT RND: Work around entire square, work CH 1, DC in each CH-1 sp around & [DC, CH 1] 4 times in each corner CH-1 sp.

NEXT RND: With E, rep last rnd.

NEXT RND: With B, rep last rnd.

Piece should meas 14” [16”] wide.

SHAPE ARMHOLE:
1ST ROW: Sk corner CH-1 sp at upper right edge, join B in next CH-1 sp, CH 3, DC in next CH-1 sp, * CH 1, DC in next CH-1 sp, rep from * across upper edge of square, end DC in CH-1 sp before corner. Turn.

2ND ROW: CH 3, DC in 1st CH-1 sp, * CH 1, DC in next CH-1 sp, rep from * across, end DC in TCH. Turn.

Rep last row once.

Rep last row, work 1 row A, 2 rows E, & 3 rows C.

SHAPE NECK:
1ST ROW: With C, work CH 5, DC in 1st CH-1 sp, * CH 1, DC in next CH-1 sp, rep from * 11 times, CH 1, SC in next CH-1 sp. Turn.

2ND ROW: CH 3, sk 1st CH-1 sp, SC in next CH-1 sp, * CH 1, DC in next Ch-1 sp, rep from * across, end DC in TCH. Turn.

3RD ROW: CH 3, DC in 1st CH-1 sp, * CH 1, DC in next CH-1 sp, rep from * 8 times, CH 1, SC in next CH-1 sp. Turn.

4TH ROW: CH 3, sk 1st CH-1 sp, DC in next CH-1 sp, * CH 1, DC in next CH-1 sp, rep from * 5 times, CH 1, SC in next CH-1 sp. Turn.

5TH ROW: CH 1, SC in 1st CH-1 sp, CH 1, SC in next CH-1 sp, * CH 1, DC in next CH-1 sp, rep from * to last CH-1 sp, end CH-1, SC in next CH-1 sp. Fasten off.

Join C with SC in 13th CH-1 sp before end of last long row, * CH 1, DC in next CH-1 sp, rep from * across, end DC in TCH. Compl as for 1st side of neck, but reverse shaping.

SHAPE SIDES:
Join B at underarm with DC in CH-1 sp; work down side edge, work CH 1, DC in each of 28 CH-1 sps, CH 1, SC in next CH-1 sp. Fasten off.

Work same row on other side edge of square.

SKIRT:
Beg at lower edge of square with B, work DC, CH 1, DC in CH-1 corner, * CH 1, DC in next CH-1 sp, rep from * across lower edge, end DC, CH 1, DC in CH-1 corner. Turn.

NEXT ROW: CH 4 [Count as DC, CH 1] DC in 1st Ch-1 sp, * CH 1, DC in next CH-1 sp, rep from * across, end DC, CH 1, DC in sp of TCH. Fasten off.

NEXT ROW: Join A at underarm with DC; work in patt, work down side edge, across lower edge, up other side edge, work [CH 1, DC] 4 times in each lower corner, end at underarm. Fasten off.

NEXT ROW: With E, work DC, CH 1, DC in corner CH-1 sp at lower edge, work in patt across lower edge, end DC, CH 1, DC in corner CH-1 sp. Cont to work in patt, inc 1 DC every row until 47 DC across row, then work even on 47 DC, work 1 more row with E, 7 rows C, 2 rows B, 3 rows D, 4 rows E, 2 rows A, 1 row B.

Rows with 47 DC should be 18 ½” [21”] wide.

Inc 1 DC each row until there are 51 DC, work 3 rows C, 1 row E.

Work even in A for 3 rows.

If longer dress is needed, cont to work in patt using desired colors.

With A, work 1 row SC around armholes, shoulders & neck edge, & KEEP WORK FLAT.

With A, beg at top A row on skirt, work 1 row in DC patt down side, across lower edge & up other side.

FRONT:
Work same as back.

FINISHING:
Weave shoulder & side seams.

HAT:
Beg at center with E, CH 7, join with sl st in 1st CH into ring.

1ST RND: CH 4 [count as 1 DC, CH 1], [DC in ring CH 1] 23 times, sl st in 3rd CH of starting CH, sl st in next CH.

2ND & 3RD RNDS: CH 4 [count as 1 DC, CH 1], * DC in next CH-1 sp, CH 1, rep from * around, end sl st in 3rd CH of starting CH, sl st in next CH.

4TH RND: With A, CH 4 [count as 1 DC, CH 1], * [DC in next CH-1 sp, CH 1] twice, DC in next DC [inc made], ch 1, rep from * around, end sl st in 3rd CH of starting CH, sl st in next CH = 36 DC.

5TH RND: With C, CH 4, * [DC in next CH-1 sp, CH 1] 3 times, DC in next DC, CH 1, rep from * around, end sl st in 3rd CH of starting CH, sl st in next CH = 48 DC.

6TH RND: With C, rep 2nd rnd.

7TH RND: With A, CH 4, * [DC in next CH-1 sp, CH 1] 4 times, DC in next DC, CH 1, rep from * around, end sl st in 3rd CH of starting CH, sl st in next CH = 60 DC.

Work in patt, ind 1 DC each rnd, & work 2 rnds D, 1 rnd B, 1 rnd E, 2 rnds B = 66 DC.

With B, work 2 rnds even.

NEXT RND: With E, SC in each CH-1 sp around = 66 SC.

NEXT RND: With C, SC in each SC around. Turn.

With A, SC in each SC around.

Rep last rnd once, dec to needed head size. Fasten off.
