Free Pattern - 1970s Lena’s Lacy Midi Dress #1307

1970s Lena’s Lacy Midi Dress #1307

This button-bodiced dress has the new “open & closed” look. The top is in double crochet, with the midi skirt & long sleeves in big chain-stitch loops. It ties comfortably at the waist with twisted cords.

SIZE:
Small [6-8], Medium [10-12], & Large [14-16].
Directions are for size Small with changes for Medium & Large in Brackets.

MATERIALS:
Coats & Clarks ONT Speed-Cro-Sheen: 16 [17-19] Balls
1 Crochet Hook #5/G [UK #7]
12 [12-13] Buttons ½”

GAUGE/TENSION:
4 DC = 1” ; 7 Rows = 3”
5 Lps = 4” ; 8 Rows = 3 ½”

MEASUREMENTS:
Body Bust = 30 1/2” – 31 ½” [32 1/2”-34”; 36”-38”]
Finished Bust [closed] = 33” [35”-39”]

DRESS:
BODICE:
Beg at neck edge of back & front, CH 81 [83-85] to meas 21” [21 ½”-22”].

1ST ROW: DC in 4th CH from hk, Dc in each of next 7 [8-9] CH, * 2 DC in next CH [inc made], DC in each of next 9 CH, rep from * across, end 2 DC in next CH, DC in each of next 9 [10-11] CH = 86 [88-90] DC. [Count CH at beg of row as 1 DC.] Turn.

2ND ROW: CH 3 [count as 1 DC], sk 1st DC, DC in each of next 3 [4-4] DC, * 2 DC in next DC, DC in each of next 10 [10-9] DC, rep from * across, end 2 DC in next DC, DC in each of next 3 [4-3] Dc, DC in top of TCH = 8 [8-9] incs.

3RD ROW: CH 3 [count as 1 DC], sk 1st DC, DC in each DC across, inc 8 [8-9] DC evenly spaced across, DC in top of TCH = 102 [104-108] DC.

BE CAREFUL not to have incs over incs of prev row, rep last row 5 [6-7] times = 142 [152-171] DC. Turn.

Mark last row for RS.

SHAPE SLEEVES:
1ST ROW [WS]: CH 3 [count as 1 DC], sk 1st DC, DC in each of next 19 [20-23] DC, 2 DC in next DC [right front], [CH 5, sk 2 DC, SC in next DC] 9 [10-11] times, CH 5, sk 2 DC [right sleeve], 2 DC in next DC, DC in each of next 40 [42-49] DC, 2 DC in next DC [back], [CH 5, sk 2 DC, SC in next DC] 9 [10-11] times, CH 5, sk 2 DC [left sleeve], 2 DC in next DC, DC in each of rem 19 [20-23] DC, DC in top of TCH [left front] = 22 [23-26] DC on each front = 44 [46-53] DC on back & 10 [11-12] lps on each sleeve. Turn each row.

2ND ROW: CH 3 [count as 1 DC] sk 1st DC, * DC in each DC to within 1 DC before next lp, 2 DC in next DC, [2 SC, CH 3, 2 SC] in each lp, 2 DC in next DC, rep from * once, DC in each rem DC, DC in top of TCH.

3RD ROW: CH 3 [count as 1 DC] sk 1st DC, * DC in each DC to within 1 DC before next lp, 2 DC in next DC, [CH 5, SC] in each CH-3 sp of each lp across sleeve, CH 5, 2 DC in next DC, rep from * once, DC in each rem DC, DC in top of TCH.

Rep 2nd & 3rd rows 4 times = 32[33-35] DC on each front, 64 [66-73] DC on back & 15 [16-17] lps on each sleeve.

NEXT ROW: CH 3 [count as 1 DC], sk 1st DC, * DC in each DC to within 1 DC before next lp, 2 [3-3] DC in next DC, sk 15 [16-17] lps [sleeve], 2 [3-3] DC in next DC, rep from * once, DC in each rem DC, DC in top of TCH = 132 [140-153] DC.

Put & carry a marker bet front & back sts at each underarm.

NEXT ROW: CH 3, sk 1st DC, DC in each DC across, DC in top of TCH.

NEXT ROW: CH 3, sk 1st DC, * DC in each DC to within 2 sts before marker, dec 1 DC before marker, dec 1 DC after marker, rep from * once, DC in each rem DC, DC in top of TCH = 1 DC dec before & after each marker [4 decs].

Rep last row 6 [6-7] times = 104 [112-121] DC.

Sl st in top of TCH, join bodice fronts.

SKIRT:
With RS facing, CH 1, SC in same st as joining sl st, * CH 4, sk next DC, SC in next DC, rep from * around, end CH 4, sk last 1 [1-2] DC, join with sl st in 1st SC = 52 [56-60] lps.
DO NOT turn.

2ND RND: CH 1, [2 SC, CH 3, 2 SC] in each CH-lp around, join with sl st in 1st SC.

3RD RND: Sl st in next SC, sl st in each of 2 CH, SC in same CH-3 sp, * CH 5, SC in next ch-3 sp, rep from * around, end CH 5, sl st in 1st SC.

Rep 2nd & 3rd rnds until dress meas 35” [36”-36”] from underarm or 1” less [stretch allowance] than needed dress length.

Rep 2nd rnd once. Fasten off.

SLEEVES:
From RS, join yarn bet front & back sts at underarm.

1ST RND: SC in same st as joining, [2 SC, ch 3, 2 sc] in each CH-5 lp around sleeve. Join with sl st in 1st SC. DO NOT turn.

2ND RND: Rep 3rd rnd on skirt = 15 [16-17] lps. Mark last lp made for underarm.

3RD RND: CH 1, [2 SC, CH 3, 2 SC] in each CH-5. Join with sl st in 1st SC.

4TH RND: Sl st in next SC & in each of next 2 CH, SC in same sp, * CH 5, SC in next CH-3 sp, rep from * around to within last CH-3 sp; DO NOT ch 5, SC in CH-3 sp at underarm. Join with sl st in 1st SC = 2 lps dec.

Rep last 2 rnds twice = 9 [10-11] lps.

Rep 2nd & 3rd rnds of skirt until sleeve meas approx 17” [17”-18”] from underarm or needed sleeve length; end 2nd rnd. Fasten off.

Work 2nd sleeve in same way.

LEFT FRONT BAND:
1ST ROW [RS]: Join yarn in left corner at neck edge, SC in same st, work down left front edge, * CH 1, sk ¼” along center edge, SC in edge, rep from * to lower edge. CH 1, turn.

2ND ROW: SC in 1st SC, * CH 1, SC in next SC, rep from * across. CH 1, turn.

3RD ROW: Rep 2nd row. Fasten off.

RIGHT FRONT BAND:
Beg at lower right front edge of opening, work 1 row same as left front band,
BE CAREFUL to have same # of sts. CH 1, turn.

2ND ROW [BUTTONHOLE]: SC in 1st SC, * CH 3, sk next SC, SC in next SC [buttonhole], rep from * 11 [11-12] times, [CH 1, SC] in each rem SC. CH 1, turn.

3RD ROW: SC in 1st SC, [CH 1, SC] in each SC & in center CH of each buttonhole across. Fasten off.

FINISHING:
Sew on buttons.

CORDS [MAKE 2]:
Cut 4 strands of yarn each 2 yds long.

Make a twisted cord; work cord loosely & knot each end.

Beg at left underarm, weave 1 cord thru lps of entire 1st rnd of skirt.

Beg at right underarm, weave 2nd cord thru same lps.

Tie ends of each cord, adjusting to waist meas.
