1970s Boho Maxi Guinevere Gown #1310

A white gown, romantically long & medieval, is bordered in pretty-color afghan squares. The bodice is lace with a pink chain to match the tassels at the hem. This is easily crocheted in an airy V stitch.

SIZE:
Small [6-8] & Medium [10-12]
Directions are for Small with changes for Medium in brackets.


MEASUREMENTS:
Body Bust = 30 ½” – 31 ½” [32 ½”-34”]
Finished Bust = 33” [36”]


MATERIALS:
Columbia-Minerva Nantuck Sweater & Afghan Yarn, 2 oz Skeins:
White – Main Color [MC] = 10 [11]
Hot Pink – [A] = 3
Turquoise - [B] = 2
Avocado – [C] = 1
1 Crochet Hook #6/H [UK #6]


GAUGE/TENSION:
4 V sts = 3”
2 Rows = 1”
Motif = 3 ¾”


GOWN:
BACK:
Beg at lower edge, above border with MC, CH 96.


1ST ROW: [DC, CH 1, DC] in 6th CH from hk [V st], * sk next 2 CH, V st of DC, CH 1, DC in next CH, rep from * to last 3 CH, end sk next 2 CH, DC in last CH. Turn each row.

2ND ROW: CH 3 [count as 1 DC], * V st of DC, CH 1, DC in CH-1 sp, rep from * across, end DC in TCH = 30 V sts + 1 DC each side.

Rep 2nd row for patt until piece meas 8” from beg.

1ST DEC ROW: CH 3, DC in 1st CH-1 sp, work to last V st, end DC in last V st, DC in TCH = 1 DC dec each side.

2ND DEC ROW: CH 3, sk next DC, * V st in CH-1 sp of next V st, rep from * across, end V st in last V st, sk next DC, DC in TCH = 28 V sts + 1 DC each side.

Rep 1st & 2nd dec row every 4” [6”] 3 [2] times = 22 [24] V sts + 1 DC each side.

Work even until piece meas 30” from beg or 11 ½” less [border allow] than needed length to underarm.

Piece above least dec row should meas 16 ½” [18”] wide.

SHAPE ARMHOLES:
Sl st in each DC of 1st V st, CH 3, work in patt to within last V st, DC in next DC = 20 [22] V sts + 1 DC each side.


Rep last row twice = 16 [18] V sts + 1 DC each side.

Work even until armholes meas 7” [7 ½”] above 1st row of armhole shaping.

SHAPE SHOULDERS:
Sl st in each DC of 1st 5 V sts, CH 3, work in patt to within last 5 V sts, end DC in next DC = 6 [8] V sts + 1 DC each side rem for back of neck. Fasten off.


FRONT:
Work same as back until piece meas 5” less than back to underarm = 22 [24] V sts + 1 DC each side.


DIVIDE FOR OPENING:
Work 11 [12] V sts, DC in sp before next V st, turn.


Work 2 rows even on these 11 [12] V sts.

SHAPE V NECK & ARMHOLE:
BE CAREFULL to keep to patt, dec 1 DC at neck edge of next row, then EVERY OTHER row 5 [7] times more; AT SAME TIME, when piece meas same as back to underarm, shape armhole same as back = 5 V sts + 1 DC each side.


Work even until armhole meas same as back armhole. Fasten off.

Join MC in same center sp as last DC was worked on last long row, CH 3, work in patt across = 11 [12] V sts + 1 DC each side.

Work same as 1st side of front, but reverse shaping.

SLEEVES:
Beg at lower edge, above border, with MC, CH 66 [72].


Work in patt on 20 [22] V sts + 1 DC each side for 5”.

Piece should meas 15” [16 ½”] wide.

Rep 1st & 2nd dec row of back once = 18 [20] V sts + 1 DC each side.

Work even until piece meas 9” from beg.

Rep 1st & 2nd dec row once = 16 [18] V sts + 1 DC each side.

Work even until piece meas 11” from beg, or 7 ½” less [border allow] then needed length to underarm.

Piece should meas 12” [13 ½”] wide.

SHAPE CAP:
Sl st in each DC of 1st V st, CH 3, work in patt to last V st, end DC in next DC.


Rep last row twice = 10 [12] V sts + 1 DC each side.

Work 2 rows even.

Rep 1st & 2nd dec rows of back 1 [2] times = 8 V sts + 1 DC each side. Fasten off.

FINISHING:
Weave shoulder seams, & sew in sleeves.


Sew side & sleeve seams.
1ST MOTIF:
With B, CH 6, join with sl st for ring.


1ST RND: [SC in ring, CH 5] 4 times, join with sl st in 1st SC.

2ND RND: * In next CH-5 lp, work SC, CH 1, [DC, CH 1] 3 times, SC, CH 1, rep from * 3 times, join with sl st in 1st SC. Fasten off.

3RD RND: Join A with sl st in any corner [center] DC, * [SC, CH 3, SC] in corner DC, CH 3, [DC, CH 1, DC] in CH-1 sp bet corners, CH 3, rep from * 3 times, join with sl st in 1st SC. Fasten off.

4TH RND: With MC, make lp on hk, * [DC, CH 3, DC] in next corner CH-3 sp, CH 3, DC in next CH-3 sp, CH 1, DC in next CH-1 sp, CH 1, DC in next CH-3 sp, Ch 3, rep from * 3 times, join with sl st in 1st DC. Fasten off.

2ND MOTIF:
Work same as 1st motif to end of 3rd rnd. Fasten off.


JOINING RND:
With MC, make lp on hk, * DC in next corner CH-3 sp, CH 1; with WS tog, SC in CH-3 corner sp of 1st motif, CH 1, DC in same corner sp of 2nd motif, * CH 1, SC in CH-3 sp of 1st motif, CH 1, DC in CH-3 sp of 2nd motif, [SC in next sp of 1st motif, DC in next sp on 2nd motif] twice, CH 1, SC in CH-3 sp of 1st motif, CH 1, rep from 1st * to 2nd * once, then compl rnd on 2nd motif as follows:
** CH 3, DC in next CH-3 sp, CH 1, DC in next CH-1 sp, CH 1, DC in next CH-3 sp, CH 3, [DC, CH 3, DC] in next corner CH-3 sp, rep from **, end sl st in 1st DC. Fasten off.


Make & join 5 more motifs in same way for 1st strip of lower border.

Make & join 7 motifs using C INSTEAD of A on 3rd rnd, join to side as on 1st strip: AT SAME TIME, join lower edge of motifs of 2nd strip to top edge of 1st strip.

Make & join 7 motifs using same colors as for 1st strip, join to lower edge of 2nd strip of motifs.

Sew border of these 3 strips to lower edge of back.

Make border for front in same way.

Sew to lower edge of front, & leave side edges open.

Make & join 2 strips of 5 motifs each for each sleeve, using C for 3rd rnd on 1st strip & A for 3rd rnd on 2nd strip.

Sew 1st & last motifs of each strip tog.

With seam at underarm, sew strip to lower edge of sleeve, easing in fullness of border.

EDGING:
From RS, beg at shoulder seam with MC, work SC, CH 1 around neck edge & front opening, BE CAREFUL to keep work flat. Fasten off. DO NOT turn.


NEXT RND: Join A in 1st CH-1 sp, * SC in CH-1 sp, CH 1, rep from * around, cont edging below front opening for 3”, end sl st in 1st SC. Fasten off.

CORD:
With dbl strand of A, make CH approx 56” long.


Lace up front edge.

TASSELS:
Cut 5 – 12” strands of A.


Fold in half & pull folded end thru st bet motifs on lower edge, draw ends thru lp tightly.

Make tassel bet each motif & at side edge of lower edge of back & front.

Trim evenly.
