1970s Mod “Going in Circles” Skirt & Bolero Set  #1305

Summery two-piece cotton outfit has a multitude of rings joined to each other in the crocheting. The bolero is made vertically in one color; the slightly dirndled skirt is striped in four colors. Attractive & attention-getting, you’ll love this summer look.

SIZE:
Small [8-10], Medium [12-14] & Large [16].
Directions are for size Small with changes for Medium & Large in brackets.

MEASUREMENTS:
BOLERO:
Bust = 31 ½”-32 ½” [34”-36”;38”]
SKIRT:
Waist = 23”-24” [25 ½”-27”;29”]

MATERIALS:
J & P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen Balls:
SKIRT:
4 [4-6] Each of Watermelon [A]; Rose [B]; Red [C]; & Purple [D]
BOLERO:
8 [8-10] Watermelon
1 Steel Crochet Hook #1 [UK #3/0]
1 yd Elastic ½” [skirt]
1 Yarn Needle

GAUGE/TENSION:
BOLERO:
4 Motifs = 3 ½”; 3 Rows = 2 ½”
SKIRT:
4 Motifs of 10 HDC = 3 ¼”; 1 Motif of 20 DC = 1 ¼”

NOTES:
Both skirt & bolero are worked entirely with 2 strands of yarn.

Bolero pattern is worked vertically.

BOLERO:
BACK:
1ST MOTIF ROW: Beg at RS edge with 2 strands [A], CH 4. DC in 4th CH from hk into ring; * CH 5, DC loosely in 4th CH from hk forming another ring, rep from * 4 [4-5] times = 6 [6-7] rings. CH 2, 5 HDC in last ring made, [sl st in CH preceding next ring, 6 HDC in next ring] 5 [5-6] times.

Working on opp side of rings, 6 HDC in last ring worked, [sl st in CH preceding next ring, 6 HDC in next ring] 5 [5-6] times. Join with sl st in top of CH 2 at beg of rnd = 6 [6-7] motifs compl.

Mark end of row for lower edge. Fasten off.

2ND MOTIF ROW: Work same as 1st motif row until 6 [6-7] rings have been compl; CH 2, HDC in last ring made; hold last row of motifs in back of work, with WS facing you & marked end to right; join with sl st in 2nd HDC preceding sl st bet motifs on 1st motif of prev row, * 2 HDC in same ring on row being worked, sl st in 2nd HDC on next motif of prev row, 2 HDC in same ring on row being worked, sl st in CH preceding next ring, 2 HDC in next ring, sk 2 HDC after last join on same motif of prev row, sl st in next st, rep from * across, end 4 HDC in same end ring where last HDC was made.

Work on opp side of rings, same as 1st motif row. Join with sl st in top of CH-2 = 6 [6-7] motifs.

Mark end of row for lower edge. Fasten off.

3RD MOTIF ROW: Work same as 1st motif row until 7 [7-8] rings have been made; CH 2, 4 HDC in last ring made; hold last row of motifs in back of work, with WS facing you & marked row to right; sk 4 sts preceding sl st bet motifs on 1st motif of prev row, join with sl st in next st, HDC in same ring on row being made, sl st in CH bet rings, 2 HDC in next ring, sk 2 HDC after last join on same motif of prev row, sl st in next st. Rep from * on 2nd motif row, compl row same as 2nd motif row = 7 [7-8] motifs.

SHAPE ARMHOLE & SHOULDER:
1ST LONG ROW: Work as for 1st motif row until 15 [16-18] rings are made; CH 2, HDC in last ring made; hold last row of motifs in back of work as before, sl st in 2nd HDC preceding sl st bet motifs on 1st motif of prev row, * 2 HDC in same ring on row being worked, sl st in 2nd HDC on next motif of prev row, 2 HDC in same ring on row being worked, sl st in CH preceding next ring, 2 HDC in next ring, sk 2 HDC after last join on same motif of prev row, sl st in next st, rep from * 5 [5-6] times; 4 HDC in same ring on row being worked, [sl st in CH preceding next ring, 6 HDC in next ring] 8 [9-10] times.

Work on opp side of rings same as 1st motif row. Join with sl st in top of CH 2 = 15 [16-18] motifs. Fasten off.

2ND LONG ROW: Make 16 [17-19] rings for row, work same as 3rd motif row.

3RD LONG ROW: Make 16 [17-19] rings, work same as 2nd motif row.

4TH LONG ROW: Make 17 [18-20] rings, work same as 3rd motif row.

LARGE SIZE ONLY:
NEXT ROW: Make 20 rings, work same as 2nd motif row.

NEXT ROW: Make 21 rings, work same as 3rd motif row.

FOR ALL SIZES:
SHAPE NECK:
1ST & 2ND ROWS: Make 16 [17-20] rings for each row, work as before, end last rep of each row 2 HDC in same end ring as last HDC.

Work on opp side of rings as before. Join with sl st in top of CH 2. Fasten off each row.

3RD & 4TH ROWS: Make 15 [16-19] rings for each row, work same as 1st & 2nd rows of neck shaping. 

Mark last row for center back on SMALL & LARGE sizes.

MEDIUM SIZE ONLY:
NEXT ROW: Make 15 rings, work as before. Mark this row for center back.

FOR ALL SIZES:
Work as before, make other half of back to corres with 1st half, reverse order of rows & count # of motifs on each corres row for correct shaping.

LEFT FRONT:
Beg at left side edge, work same as 1st row of motifs on back = 6 [6-7] motifs.

NEXT ROW: Work same as 3rd row of motifs on back = 7 [7-8] motifs.

SHAPE ARMHOLE & SHOULDER:
Work same as 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th long rows on back = 17 [18-20] motifs.

LARGE SIZE ONLY:
NEXT ROW:
Make 20 rings, work same as 2nd row of motifs on back.

NEXT ROW: Make 21 rings, work same as 3rd row of motifs on back.

FOR ALL SIZES:
SHAPE FRONT:
NEXT ROW: Make 14 [16-18] rings, work same as 2nd row of motifs on back.

NEXT ROW: Make 3 rings less than on last row, work same as 2nd row of motifs on back.

Rep last row 1 [2-1] times = 8 [7-12] motifs.

RIGHT FRONT:
Work same as left front, but reverse shaping & count # of motifs on each corres row for correct shaping.

FINISHING:
With dbl strand of yarn, tack motifs of back & fronts tog, & side edges & shoulders.

EDGING:
*CH 5, DC in 4th Ch from hk into a ring, rep from * until strip of rings fits around outer edge of bolero; work 6 HDC in last ring made, ** sl st in CH preceding next ring, 6 HDC in next ring, rep from ** to end of strip. Compl motifs same as 1st motif row. Fasten off.

BE CAREFUL not to twist motifs, tack last motif to 1st motif, making circle.

Pin edging to outer edge of bolero, KEEP WORK FLAT; tack edging to bolero.

SKIRT:
1ST MOTIF RND: Beg at upper edge of back & front, with 2 strands of A, * CH 5, DC loosely in 4th CH from hk into ring, rep from * 35 [39-41] times = 36 [40-42] rings. 

BE CAREFUL not to twist rings, join with sl st in 1st CH of starting ring into circle, [5 HDC in next ring, sl st in CH preceding next ring] 36 [40-42] times.

Work on opp side of rings, work [5 HDC in next ring, sl st in CH preceding next ring] 36 [40-42] times = 36 [40-42] motifs, 10 HDC in each motif. Fasten off.

2ND MOTIF RND: With 2 strands of B, work same as 1st Motif rnd until 36 [40-42] rings are made. 

BE CAREFUL not to twist rings, join with sl st in 1st CH of starting ring, 2 HDC in next ring; hold last rnd of motifs in back of work, with WS facing; join with sl st in 2nd HDC preceding sl st bet any 2 motifs of prev rnd, HDC in same ring on rnd being worked, join with sl st in 2nd HDC on next motif of prev rnd, * 2 HDC in same ring on rnd being worked, sl st in CH preceding next ring, 2 HDC in next ring, sl st in 2nd HDC preceding sl st bet motifs on same motif of prev rnd, HDC in same ring on rnd being worked, sl st in 2nd HDC on next motif of prev rnd, rep from * around, end 2 HDC in same ring on rnd being worked, sl st in next CH bet motifs.

Work on opp side of rings same as 1st rnd of motifs. Fasten off.

3RD MOTIF RND: With dbl strand of C, rep 2nd rnd.

4TH MOTIF RND: With dbl strand of D, rep 2nd rnd.

Work in same color seq as establ [A,B,C,D] work as follows:
5TH, 6TH & 7TH RNDS: Rep 2nd rnd.

8TH RND: Make 2 HDC instead of 1 HDC bet joins on each ring, work same as 2nd rnd along 1 side of rings.

Make 6 HDC instead of 5 in each ring, work along opp side of rings as before = 12 HDC on each motif. Fasten off.

9TH – 12TH RNDS: Work in color seq, rep 8th rnd.

13TH RND: Make 3 HDC instead of 2 HDC bet joins on each ring & 7 HDC in each ring along opp side of rings, work as before = 14 HDC on each motif.

14TH – 16TH RNDS: Work in color seq, rep 13th rnd.

17TH RND: [CH 6, TRC in 5th CH from hk to make ring] 36 [40-42] times. 

BE CAREFUL not to twist rings, join with sl st in 1st CH of starting ring, 3 DC in next ring; hold last rnd of motifs in back of work, with WS facing, join with sl st in 3rd st preceding sl st bet any 2 motifs of prev rnd, * 4 DC in same ring on rnd being worked, join with sl st in 3rd st on next motif of prev rnd, 3 DC in same ring on rnd being worked, sl st in CH preceding next ring, 3 DC in next ring, sl st in 3rd st preceding sl st bet motifs on same motif of prev rnd, rep from * around, end last rep sl st in last CH bet motifs.

Work on opp side of rings, [10 DC in next ring, sl st in next CH bet motifs] 36 [40-42] times. Fasten off.

Rep last rnd until piece meas 19” [20”-21”] from beg or 1” less [stretch allowance] than needed skirt length.

FINISHING:
CASING:
From WS, join dbl strand of A to sl st bet any 2 motifs at upper edge, SC in same st, * CH 5, SC in back lps of center st on next motif of 3rd  rnd, CH 5, SC in next sl st bet motifs on 1st rnd, rep from * around. Fasten off.

Cut elastic ½” longer than needed waist meas.

Insert inside casing; lap ends of elastic to ½” & sew securely.
