Vintage 1970s Men’s Tweed Sweater Jacket #1282
SIZES:
38, 40, 42 & 44
Directions are for size 38 with changes for 40, 42 & 44 in brackets.

MATERIALS:
American Thread Dawn Wintuk Sport Yarn, 2 oz Skeins: 7 [7-8-8] each of White & Black
1 Pair Knitting Needles #10 ½
1 Pair Knitting Needles #6
1 Plastic Crochet Hook #J
2 Pocket Buttons 5/8”
6 Jacket Buttons 7/8”
2 yds Black Grosgrain Ribbon 2” Wide

GAUGE/TENSION:
On 10 1/2 Needles:
7 Sts = 2”

NOTE:
Entire jacket is worked with 1 strand of Black & 1 of White together.

MEASUREMENTS:
Width Across Back at Underarm = 21” [22”-23”-24”]
Width Across Each Front at Underarm = 11 ½” [12”-12 ½”-13”]

BACK:
With 10 ½ needles cast on 72 [76-80-84] sts.

1ST ROW: P1, K across row to within last st, P1.

2ND ROW: K across row.

3RD ROW: P1, K1, P across to within last 2 sts, K1, P1.

NEXT ROWS: Rep 2nd & 3rd rows until BACK meas 3 ½” from beg.

NEXT ROWS: Work in ST ST [K1 row, P1 row] until BACK meas 18” [19”-19”-19”] from beg or needed length to UNDERARM.

SHAPE ARMHOLES:
NEXT 2 ROWS: Bind off 4 [4-5-5] sts at beg of each row.

NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 st at beg & end of every other row 3 [4-4-5] times.

NEXT ROWS: Cont in ST ST until ARMHOLES meas 9” [9 ½”-9 ½”-10”] from 1st bind off.

SHAPE SHOULDERS:
NEXT 2 ROWS: Bind off 9 sts at beg of each row.

NEXT 2 ROWS: Bind off 8 [8-9-9] sts at beg of each row.

Bind off rem sts.

RIGHT FRONT:
With 10 ½ needles cast on 40 [42-44-46] sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work same as BACK for 3 ½” & end on WS.

NEXT ROW: K across row.

NEXT ROW: P1, K1, P across row.

NEXT ROWS: Rep last 2 rows until FRONT meas same as BACK to 
UNDERARM.

SHAPE ARMHOLE same as BACK.

NEXT ROWS: Work even until ARMHOLE meas 6 ½” [7”-7”-7 ½”] from 1st bind off ending at NECK edge.

SHAPE NECK:
Bind off 10 [11-11-12] sts, then K2 tog on
NECK edge every K row 6 times.

SHAPE SHOULDERS same as BACK.

Mark evenly spaced places for 6 buttons, with 1st marker 6” from lower edge & last marker ½” below NECK shaping.

LEFT FRONT:
Work same as right
FRONT reversing patt & all shaping & work 

BUTTONHOLES to corres to markers.

BUTTONHOLES:
K to within last 7 sts, bind off next 3 sts, K to end of row.

NEXT ROW: Cast on 3 sts over bound-off sts.

SLEEVES:
With 10 ½ needles cast on 40 [42-44-46] sts.

NEXT ROWS: Change to #6 needles & work in K1, P1 ribbing for 3”.

NEXT 4 ROWS: Work in ST ST.

NEXT ROWS: Change to 10 ½ needles & cont in ST ST, inc 1 st at beg & end of row every 2” 6 [7-8-8] times = 52 [56-60-62] sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work even until SLEEVE meas 19” [20”-20”-21”] or needed length to UNDERARM.

SHAPE CAP:
NEXT 2 ROWS: Bind off 4 sts at beg of each row.

NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 st at beg & end of every K row until 24 sts rem.

NEXT 4 ROWS: Bind off 3 sts at beg of each row.

Bind off rem sts.

COLLAR:
With 10 ½ needles cast on 68 [70-72-74] sts.

NEXT ROWS: Start with P row & work in ST ST, dec 1 st at beg & end of every 4th row 5 times.

NEXT ROWS: Work even until COLLAR meas 4” [4”-4 ½”-4 ½”].

Bind off on K side, then keep last st on needle, pick up 1 st in each row on dec side, 1 st in each st across cast on sts, 1 st in each row on opp dec side.

NEXT ROW: K across row. Bind off.

POCKETS: [MAKE 2]:
With 10 ½ needles cast on 10 sts.

NEXT ROW: P across row.

NEXT 4 ROWS: Work in ST ST, inc 1 st at beg & end of next 4 rows.

NEXT ROWS: Work even on 18 sts until POCKET meas 5 ½” from beg & end with K row.

NEXT ROW: K across row. Bind off.

POCKET FLAPS: ]MAKE 2]:
With 10 ½ needles cast on 10 sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work 1st 3 rows same as POCKET.

NEXT ROW: Inc in 1st st, K6, drop yarn, attach another length of yarn [BUTTONHOLE], K across rem sts, inc 1 st at end of row.

NEXT ROW: Work both sides at same time, inc 1 st at beg & end of row.

NEXT ROW: P across row, inc 1 st at beg & end of row.

NEXT 5 ROWS: Work across all sts in ST ST.

NEXT ROW: Dec 1 st at beg & end of row.

NEXT ROWS: Work 3 rows even in ST ST. Bind off.

Work row of sl sts around shaped edge.

FINISHING:
Weave
SHOULDER, SIDE & SLEEVE seams.

Sew SLEEVES in place.

Sew COLLAR to NECK edge & leave 1” of neck edge free at each end for overlap.

Sew POCKETS & FLAPS in place.

Face each FRONT with grosgrain ribbon.

Use 1 strand of yarn, finish BUTTONHOLES with BUTTONHOLE st.

Sew seam binding across lower inside edge of jacket.

Sew button in place.
