Vintage 1970s Men’s Mod Two-Tone Vest #1281
SIZE:
38, 40, 42 & 44
Directions are for size 38 with changes for 40, 42 & 44 in brackets.

MATERIALS:
American Thread Dawn Wintuk Knitting Worsted, 2 oz Skeins:
2 [2-2-3] Black; 3 [3-4-4] Gold
1 Pair Knitting Needles #7
1 Plastic Crochet Hook #H
5 Buttons

GAUGE:
5 Patt Sts = 1”

MEASUREMENTS:
Width Across Back at Underarm = 20” [21”-22”-23”]
Width Across Each Front at Underarm = 10” [11”-11”-12”]

VEST:
BACK:
With gold cast on 86 [90-94-98] sts.

Work in K1, P1 ribbing up entire back & inc 1 st at beg & end of row every 1” [all sizes] 7 [7-8-8] times = 100 [104-110-114] sts.

Work even until back meas 10 ½” [all sizes] or needed length to underarm.

SHAPE ARMHOLES:
NEXT 2 ROWS:
Bind off 12 [13-13-13] sts at beg of each row.

NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 st at beg & end of every other row 8 times [all sizes].

NEXT ROWS: Work even until armholes meas 9 ¼” [9 ½”-9 ¾”-10”].

SHAPE SHOULDERS:
NEXT 4 ROWS: Bind off 9 [9-9-10] sts at beg of each row.

Bind off rem sts.

RIGHT FRONT:
With black cast on 3 sts.

1ST ROW: P1, K1 in 1st st [inc], P1; in next st K1, P1 [inc].

2ND ROW: K1, P1 in 1st st [inc], K1, P1, K1; in next st P1, K1 [inc], drop black.

3RD & 4TH ROWS: With gold K1, * YF sl 1 as if to P, K1, rep from * across row, drop gold.

5TH ROW: With black P1, K1 in 1st st, then P1, * K1, P1 rep from * to within last st, in next st K1, P1.

6TH ROW: K1, P1 in 1st st, then K1, * P1, K1, rep from * to within last st; in next st P1,, K1, drop black.

NEXT 4 ROWS: Rep 3rd to 6th rows.

11TH & 12TH ROWS: Rep 3rd & 4th rows.

13TH ROWS: Rep 5th row, cast on 2 sts [all sizes] at end of row.

14TH ROW: Rep 6th row.

Rep last 4 rows 3 times [all sizes].

NEXT 2 ROWS: Rep 3rd & 4th rows.

NEXT ROW: With black K1, P1 rep from beg to within last st, K1, P1 in next st, cast on 2 sts [all sizes].

NEXT ROW: K1, P1 in 1st st, then K1, * P1, K1, rep from * across row.

Rep last 4 rows 2 [3-3-4] times = 51 [55-55-59] sts.

NEXT 2 ROWS: Rep 3rd & 4th rows.

NEXT 2 ROWS: With black K1, * P1, K1, rep from * across row.

Rep last 4 rows for patt.

Work even in patt until front meas same as back to underam from last inc at side edge, ending with 1st row of black.

SHAPE ARMHOLE & NECK:
NEXT ROW: Bind off 12 [13-13-13] sts at beg of row, work in patt across row dec 1 st at end of row.

Cont to shape armhole same as back & AT SAME TIME dec 1 st at neck edge EVERY 5th row 12 [15-15-17] more times.

Work even until armhole meas same as back.

Shape shoulder same as back.

Mark position for 5 buttons, place 1st marker approx ¾” from last front edge inc, & last marker 2 rows below 1st neck edge dec, make other spaced evenly.

LEFT FRONT:
Work 1st 10 rows same as right front.

11TH & 12TH ROWS: Rep 3rd & 4th rows.

13TH ROW: Cast on 2 sts at beg of row [all sizes], then rep 5th row.

14TH ROW: Rep 6th row.

NEXT ROWS: Rep last 4 rows 3 times [all sizes].

NEXT 2 ROWS: Rep 3rd & 4th rows.

NEXT ROW: With black cast on 2 sts at beg of row [all sizes], in 1st st P1, K1, then * P1, K1, rep from * across row.

NEXT ROW: * K1, P1, rep from * to within last st, in next st P1, K1.

NEXT ROWS: Rep last 4 rows 2 [3-3-4] times.

Then compl same as right front, but reverse neck & armhole shaping & work buttonholes to corres to markers.

BUTTONHOLES:
Work across 1st 4 sts; bind off next 2 sts work across row; on next row, cast on 2 sts over bound off sts.

FINISHING:
Weave shoulder & side seams.

Work row of sl sts all around vest & armholes by working with black yarn for front; gold for black & cut yarn.

Split strand of black yarn in half & finish buttonholes with buttonhole st.

Sew buttons in place.
