Vintage 1970s Men’s Continental Side-Zip Cardigan #1317

This side-zip jacket in golden beige has continental styling in the high round neckline, leather buttoned. Crocheted in a fun stitch of double crochets & chains.
SIZE:
38 - 40 - 42 - 44
Directions are for size 38 with changes for 40, 42 & 44 in brackets.
MEASUREMENTS:
Body Chest = 38” [40”-42”-44”]
Finished Chest [Closed] = 39” [40”-42”-44”]
MATERIALS:
Spinnerin Deluxe Knitting Worsted, 4 oz Skeins: 8 [8-9-9]
1 Crochet Hook #6/H [UK #6]
1 Jacket Zipper
2 Buttons
GAUGE/TENSION:
5 Star Sts = 3”
9 Rows = 5”
PATTERN:
1ST ROW [WS]: YOH, pull up lp in 1st DC, YOH, pull up lp in next DC, YOH, pull up lp in next DC, YOK & thru 7 lps on hk, CH 1 for eye [star st made], * [YOH, pull up lp in next DC] twice, YOH, pull up lp in DC just worked in, YOH & thru 7 lps on hk, CH 1 for eye, rep from * across, end YOH, pull up lp in last DC, YOH, pull up lp in top of TCH, YOH, pull up lp in next DC, YOH & thru 7 lps on hk, CH 1 for eye. CH 3, turn.
2ND ROW: DC in eye of 1st star st, * 2 DC in eye of next star st, rep from * across, end DC in eye of last star st, DC in top of TCH. CH 3, turn.
Rep these 2 rows for patt.

Beg at lower edge, CH 68 [72-76-82].
DC in 4th CH from hk & in each CH across = 65 [69-73-79] DC in top of TCH. CH 3, turn.
Work in patt on 32 [35-37-40] star sts until piece meas approx 16” from start, or needed length to underarm, end patt 2nd row.
Piece should be approx 19 ½” [21”-22 ½”-24”] wide.
SHAPE ARMHOLES:
1ST ROW [WS]: Sl st in each of 2 [2-2-4] DC, star st over next 2 DC, work in patt to within last 1 [1-1-3] DC & TCH – 31 [33-35-36] star sts. CH 1, turn.
2ND ROW: Sl st in sp after 1st star st, CH 1 DC in eye of next star st, * 2 DC in eye of next star st, rep from * to last star st, end sl st in sp before last star st – 57 [61-63-67] DC + TCH. CH 1, turn.
3RD ROW: Sl st in each of 2 DC, star st over next 2 DC, work in patt to within last DC & TCH, sl st in next DC – 27 [29-30-32] star sts.
Work even in patt until piece meas 9 ½” [9 ½”-10”-10 ½”] above 1st row of armhole shaping, end patt 2nd row. CH 1, turn.
SHAPE SHOULDER:
1ST ROW [WS]: Sl st in each of 6 [6-8-8] DC, work in patt to within last 5 [5-7-7] DC & TCH – 21 [23-23-24] star sts. CH 1, turn.
2ND ROW: [Sl st in eye of star st & in sp after star st] 3 times, sl st in eye of next star st, Ch 3, DC in eye of star st just worked , work in patt to within last 3 star sts – 29[31-33-35] DC + CH 3. CH 1, turn.

1ST ROW [WS]: Sl st in each of 2 [2-2-4] DC, star st over next 2 DC, work in patt across – 21 [22-23-23] star sts. CH 3, turn.
2ND ROW: Work in patt to last star st, end sl st in sp before last star st – 39 [41-43-43] Dc + TCH. CH 1, turn.
3RD ROW: Sl st in each of 2 DC, star st over next 2 DC, work in patt across – 19 [20-21-21] star sts.

Work even until piece meas 18” from start or 1” less [border allowance] than needed length to underarm, end patt 2nd row.
Piece above last inc row should meas 16” [16 ½”-17”-17 ½”] wide.
SHAPE CAP:
1ST – 3RD ROWS: Work same as for back armhole shaping – 20 [21-22-21] star sts. CH 3, turn.
4TH ROW: Work 1 row even – 39 [41-43-41] DC + TCH. CH 1, turn.
5TH ROW: Sl st in each of 2 DC, star st over next 2 DC, work in patt to within last DC * TCH, sl st in next DC – 18 [19-20-19] star sts. CH 3, turn.
Rep last 2 rows 3 [3-4-4] times – 12 [13-12-11] star sts.
ON SIZES 40, 44 ONLY:
Rep 4th row.
ON ALL SIZES:
SC in each st across. Fasten off.
FINISHING:
With backstitch sew shoulder seams; sew in sleeves.
Sew side & sleeve seams.
LOWER BORDER:
Join yarn in lower left front edge. From RS, SC in sp bet DC across lower edge of fronts & back. CH 1, turn.
2ND – 5TH ROWS: SC in each SC across. Fasten off.
NECKBAND:
From RS, beg at top or right front neck edge, SC around neck edge, ease in to needed fit, end at left shoulder seam. CH 1, turn each row.
2ND – 5TH ROWS: SC in each SC across. Fasten off.
REVERSE SC EDGING:
From RS, join yarn in lower left front edge. Work from left to right SC up left front edge, edge of neckband, around neck, down right front edge & around lower edge. Fasten off.
SLEEVE BORDER:
From RS, join yarn in underarm seam. SC in sp bet each DC around sleeve edge. Join with sl st in 1st SC. CH 1, turn each rnd.
2ND – 5TH RNDS: SC in each SC around. Join with sl st in 1st SC. DO NOT turn at end of last rnd.
6TH RND: Work from left to right, SC in each SC around. Fasten off.
Sew zipper below neck border & leave 1 ¾” of lower jacket open.
Sew buttons to left back edge of neckband.
Work button-loops on right front edge of neckband.
