1970s Country Colleen Skirt & Shawl Set #1306

A brilliant aqua skirt with a fringed shawl – country dressing the Irish way. A row of openwork flowers is framed by bands of mesh stitch in the wide-flaring skirt, with the rest in double crochet. The lacy shawl is a versatile V shape.

SIZE:
The shawl fits all sizes.

The skirt is shown in Small [10-12] & Medium [14-16]. Skirt directions are for size Small with changes for Medium in brackets.

MEASUREMENTS:
Body Hip = 34 ½”–36” [38”-40”]
Finished Hip = 46” [48”]

MATERIALS:
Spinnerin Marvel Twist Knitting Worsted, 4 oz Skeins: 10 [11]
1 Aluminum Crochet Hook #3/G [UK #7]
1 yd Elastic 1”

GAUGE/TENSION:
7 DC = 2”
9 Rows DC = 5”

SKIRT:
BACK:
Beg at lower edge, CH 123 [135].

1ST ROW: DC in 4th CH from hk & in each CH across. Turn each row.

2ND ROW: * CH 4, sk next 2 DC, DC in next DC, rep from * across = 40 [44] meshes [M].

3RD ROW: * CH 4, SC in next CH-4 sp, rep from * across.

4TH – 7TH ROWS: Rep 3rd row.

8TH ROW: CH 1, SC in SC, * CH 2, SC in next CH-4 sp, rep from * across.

9TH ROW: CH 3 [count as 1 DC], sk 1st SC, * 2 DC in CH-2 sp, rep from * across, end 2 DC in CH-2 sp = 120 [132] DC.

10TH ROW: Rep 2nd row = 40 [44] M.

11TH ROW: Rep 8th row.

12TH ROW: CH 1, SC in 1st SC, * 2 SC in CH-2 sp, SC in SC, rep from * across = 121 [133] SC.

13TH ROW: CH 3 [count as 1 DC], sk 1st SC, DC in next SC & in each SC across = 121 [133] DC.

25TH – 32ND ROWS: Rep 3rdd – 10th rows = 40 [44] M.

33RD ROW: CH 1, SC in 1st SC, * CH 1, SC in next CH-4 sp, rep from * across.

34TH ROW: * SC in SC, SC in CH-1 sp, rep from * across = 80 [88] SC.

35TH ROW: CH 3, sk 1st st, DC in next st & in each st across.

Rep last row until piece meas 23” from beg, or 9” less than needed skirt length.

Piece should meas 23” [25”] wide.

1ST DEC ROW: CH 3, sk 1st 2 DC, DC in next DC & in each DC to within last 2 DC, sk next DC, DC in last DC = 1 DC dec each side.

Work 3 rows even.

Dec 1 DC each side of next row = 76 [84] DC.

Work 2 rows even.

NEXT ROW: * Work 19 [21] DC, put marker on work, rep from * twice, finish row = 3 markers.

SHAPE DARTS:
Dec 1 DC each side & 1 Dc at each marker every other row 4 [5] times = 56 [59] DC.

WAISTBAND:
Work in SC for 5 [4] rows. Fasten off.

FRONT:
Work same as back.

FINISHING:
Sew side seams.

Work 1” deep casing around waistband.

Cut elastic to waist meas; weave thru casing & sew ends tog securely.

SHAWL:
Beg at neck edge, CH 159.

1ST ROW: SC in 2nd CH from hk & in each CH across = 158 SC. Turn.

2ND ROW: CH 3 [count as 1 DC], sk 1st SC, DC in next SC, * CH 1, sk next SC, DC in each of next 2 SC, rep from * across = 53 patts of 2 DC.

Mark center DC patt = 26 patts each side of center patt. CH 4, turn.

3RD ROW: 2 DC in 1st CH-1 sp, * CH 1, 2 DC in next CH-1 sp, rep from * to center patt, work CH 1, 2 DC bet 2 DC of center patt, CH 1, 2 DC in next CH-1 sp, work in patt across, end CH 1, 2 DC in last sp = 1 patt inc. CH 4, turn.

Rep last row for patt, having 1 patt more every row until piece meas 15” from beg. Fasten off.

FINISHING FRINGE:
Cut yarn into 9” lengths.3

Knot 2 strands in each CH-1 sp on last row & in side edge of each row. Trim ends.
