1970s Mod Wavy Stripes 3-Piece Set #1316
An undulating stripes pattern creates this vivid three-piece ensemble. The skirt is crocheted from side to side. The gypsy shawl is worked from long edge to point of triangle. A lacy stitch makes a cool & cute, cropped tank top.
SIZE:
Small [8-10] & Medium [12-14].
Directions are for size Small with changes for Medium in brackets.
MEASUREMENTS:
Body Bust = 31 ½”-32 ½” [34”-36”]
Finished Bust = 32 ½” [35”]
Skirt Waist to Hem = 24”
MATERIALS:
Unger Nanette, 50 gr Balls:
Skirt: 7 White [A]; 4 Rose [B]; 4 Purple [C]; 2 Black [D]
Shawl: 8 A; 4 Each of B & C; 3 D
Tank Top: 4 [5] A
1 Crochet Hook #3-4/F [UK #8]
1 yd Elastic 1” for Skirt
GAUGE/TENSION:
4 Sts = 1”
NOTE:
Skirt is worked vertically with seam at center back. When changing colors, always complete last stitch of row with new color.
SKIRT:
Beg at center back with A, CH 97 loosely.
1ST ROW [RS]: SC in 2nd CH from hk, SC in each of next 11 CH [waistband], * HDC in next 3 CH, DC in next 3 CH, HDC in next 3 CH, SC in next 3 CH, rep from * across. CH 1, turn.
2ND ROW: * SC in next 3 sts, HDC in next 3 sts, DC in next 3 sts, HDC in next 3 sts, rep from * 6 times, end SC in each of last 12 SC. CH 1, turn.
3RD ROW: SC in each of 12 SC, * HDC in next 3 sts, DC in next 3 sts, HDC in next 3 sts, SC in next 3 sts, rep from * across, work off 2 lps of last SC with D; cut A. With D, CH 1, turn.
4TH ROW [WS]: With D, sl st loosely in each st across. Cut D; join B. With B, CH 1, turn.
Piece should meas 24” in length.
5TH ROW: Work in top of 3rd row, with B, SC in each of 12 sts, * HDC in next 3 sts, SC in next 3 sts, HDC in next 3 sts, DC in next 3 sts, rep from * across. Turn.
6TH ROW: CH 3 [count as 1 DC], DC in next 2 sts, HDC in next 3 sts, SC in next 3 sts, finish row in patt as establ on 5th row. CH 1, turn.
7TH ROW: With B, work in same patt as 5th row, end working off 2 lps of last DC with D; cut B. With D, CH 1, turn.
8TH ROW: With D, sl st loosely in each st across. Cut D; join A.
9TH ROW: Work in top of 7th row, with A, rep 3rd row. DO NOT cut yarn. CH 1, turn.
10TH & 11TH ROWS: With A, rep 2nd & 3rd rows, end work off 2 lps of last SC with D; cut A. With D, CH 1, turn.
12TH ROW: With D, rep 4th row. Cut D; join C.
13TH – 15TH ROWS: With C, rep 5th -7th rows, work off 2 lps of last DC with D; cut C. With D, CH 1, turn.
16TH ROW: With D, rep 4th row. Cut D; join A.
17TH – 19TH ROWS: Rep 9th – 11th rows.
Rep 4th – 19th rows for patt 7 [8] times, then work 4th – 16th rows. Fasten off.
FINISHING:
Run in all yarn ends on WS. Weave back seam.
From RS, with A, work 1 rnd sl st around lower edge, BE CAREFUL to keep work flat.
NEXT RND: CH 1, * work from left to right, from RS, SC in each st around. Join with sl st in 1st st. Fasten off.
Work same edging around upper edge of skirt.
With A,, work 1” deep casing for elastic on WS of waistband.
Cut elastic to waist measurement; draw thru casing; & sew ends tog securely.
SHAWL:
Beg at neck edge with A, CH 256.
1ST ROW: SC in 2nd CH from hk & in next 2 CH, * HDC in next 3 CH, DC in next 3 CH, HDC in next 3 CH, SC in next 3 CH, rep from * across, end SC in each of last 3 CH. CH 1, turn.
2ND ROW: SC in each SC, HDC in each HDC, DC in each DC across, end SC in each of last 3 SC. CH 1, turn.
3RD ROW: Rep 2nd row. At end of 3rd row, work off last 2 lps of last st with D; cut A. With D, CH 1, turn.
4TH ROW [WS]: With D, sl st loosely in each st across. Cut D; join B. Turn.
Piece should meas 62 ¾” wide.
5TH ROW: With B, CH 3 [count as 1 DC]; work in top of 3rd row, sk 1st & next st, DC in next SC [1 st dec], * HDC in next 3 HDC, SC in next 3 DC, HDC in next 3 HDC, DC in next 3 SC, rep from * across to last 3 sts, sk next 2 sts, DC in last st [2 sts dec]. Turn.
6TH RND: CH 2 [count as 1 HDC], sk 1st & next st, HDC in each of 2 HDC, * SC in each SC, DC in each DC, HDC in each HDC, rep from * across, dec 2 sts at end of row. Turn.
7TH ROW: Dec 1 HDC, * SC in each SC, HDC in each HDC, DC in each DC, rep from * across, dec 2 sts at end of row. Change to D; cut B. With D, CH 1, turn.
8TH ROW: With D, rep 4th row. Cut D; join A.
9TH ROW: With A, work at top of row, dec 2 sts at beg of row, work DC in each SC, HDC in each HDC, SC in each DC across, dec 1 st at end of row.
10TH & 11TH ROWS: With A, dec 2 sts at beg & 1 st at end of row, work HDC in each HDC, SC in each SC, DC in each DC across. At end of 11th row, change to D; cut A. With D, CH 1, turn.
12TH ROW: With D, rep 4th row. Cut D; join C. Turn.
13TH ROW: With C, dec 1 st at beg of row & 2 sts at end of row, work HDC in each HDC, SC in each DC, DC in each SC across.
14TH & 15TH ROWS: Dec 1 st at beg of row, 2 sts at end of row, work HDC in each HDC, SC in each SC, DC in each DC across.
At end of 15th row, change to D; cut C. With D, CH 1, turn.
16TH ROW: With D, rep 4th row. Cut D; join A. Turn.
17TH & 19TH ROWS: Work same as 9th – 11th rows.
20TH ROW: With D, rep 4th row. Cut D, join B.
Work in striped patt as establ, dec 9 sts each stripe [on A stripe dec 2 sts at beg of each row & 1 st at end of each row; on B & C stripes, dec 1 st at beg of each row & 2 sts at end of each row] until there are 24 stripes, end with C stripe – 12 sts rem.
Work A stripe, dec to 3 sts. Fasten off.
Shawl should meas approx 36” in length thru center.
EDGING:
From Rs, join A in CH at upper left-hand edge. Work across starting CH, from left to right, SC in each CH across. Fasten off.
From RS, with A, work 1 rows of SC along both side edges of shawl, BE CAREFUL to keep work flat.
NEXT ROW: From RS, work from left to right, * CH 1, sk next st, HDC in next st, rep from * across both side edges. Fasten off.
FRINGE:
Cut A into 14” strands.
Hold 3 strands tog; fold in half.
With hk, draw folded lp thru 1st st on side edge, pull strands thru lp & tighten.
Knot fringe in each CH-1 sp on side edges. Trim evenly.
TANK TOP:
BACK:
Beg at lower edge with A, CH 81 [101] loosely.
1ST ROW: DC in 4th CH from hk, * sk next 2 CH, work DC in next st, CH 2, DC in same st [V st], sk next 2 CH, DC in each of next 2 CH, rep from * across 11 [12] V sts.
Piece should meas approx 16” [17 ½”] wide.
2ND ROW: CH 3 [count as 1 DC], DC in next st, * 3 DC in CH-2 sp of V st [shell], Dc in each of next 2 DC, rep from * across, end DC in DC, DC in top of TCH – 11 [12] shells.
3RD ROW: CH 3 [count as 1 DC], DC in next DC, * V st of DC, CH 2, DC in center DC as shell, DC in each of next 2 DC, rep from * across. Turn.
Rep 2nd & 3rd rows for patt until piece meas 8” from be or needed length to underarm, end 2nd row.
SHAPE ARMHOLE:
Sl st across 1st 2 DC & 3 DC of shell; CH 1, work in patt to within last shell & 2 DC – 9 [10] V sts. Turn.
Work even until armholes meas 4 ½” above armhole shaping row, end patt 2nd row.
SHAPE NECK & SHOULDERS:
NEXT ROW: Work [Dc in each of 2 DC, V st in center DC of next shell] 3 times, DC in next DC. Turn.
NEXT ROW: CH 3, DC in CH-2 sp of V st, DC in each of next 2 DC, [shell of 3 DC in CH-2 sp of next V st, DC in each of next 2 DC] twice. Turn.
NEXT ROW: CH 3 [count as 1 DC], DC in next DC, [V st in center DC of next shell, DC in each of next 2 DC] twice, DC in top of TCH. Turn.
NEXT ROW: CH 3, sk next DC, DC in next DC, [shell in CH-2 sp of next V st, DC in each of next 2 DC] twice.
Work even in patt until armhole meas 6 ¾” [7 ¾ ”] above armhole shaping row. Fasten off.
Sk 3 [4] shell on last long row; join yarn in 2nd DC after last sk shell, CH 3, V st in center DC of next shell, finish row – 3 V sts.
Compl same as 1st shoulder, but reverse shaping.
FRONT:
Work same as back, shaping neck when armholes meas 3 ½” above armhole shaping row, end patt 2nd row.
Shape neck & shoulder same as back.
FINISHING:
Sew shoulder & side seams.
EDGING:
From RS, work 1 rnd SC around neck edge, & ease into needed fit. DO NOT turn.
NEXT RND: From RS, work from left to right, SC in each SC around.
Work same edging around armholes & lower edge.
