Vintage 1970s Boho Green Medallions Lace Sweater #1320
Green medallions in a long row are framed by solid & openwork stripes; chain loops make the rest. This top looks terrific in multi-colors, equally enchanting in solid white or pastels…add some metallic yarn & you’ll have evening glitz! Endless creative options.
SIZE:
Small [8-10] & Medium [12-14]
Directions are for size Small with changes for Medium in brackets.
MEASUREMENTS:
Body Bust = 31 ½” – 32 ½” [34”-36”]
Finished Bust = 34” [38”]
MATERIALS:
Knitting Worsted: 8 [10] oz Melon [M]; 1 oz each of Coral [C], Light Olive [L], & Rust [R]
1 Crochet Hook #8/I [UK #5]
GAUGE/TENSION:
Gauge is not supplied. Be sure to follow measurements as given in directions.
SWEATER:
CENTER STRIP:
With L, CH 6, join with sl st into a ring, CH 3, 3 DC in ring, CH 3, 4 DC in ring, * CH 12, sl st in 6th CH from hk make ring, sl st in next 3 CH in CH-12, 3 DC in last made ring, CH 3, 4 DC in same ring, rep from * 7 times, end at lower edge of center strip.
Work on other side of strip, CH 1, ** 4 DC in ring, CH 3, 4 DC in same ring, sl st in top sl st [diamond compl], CH 3, sk next 3 CH, sl st in top of next motif, rep from ** times, end 4 DC in ring of end motif, CH 3, 4 DC in same ring, CH 1; sl st in top of CH-3. Cut L; join C. DO NOT turn.
2ND RND: With C, CH 2, SC in same CH-1 sp, CH 7, sk next 4 DC, SC in CH-3 sp, * CH 3, sk next 4 DC, DC in next CH-3 sp, CH 1, DC in same CH-3 SP, ch 3, sc in next CH-3 sp, rep from * 7 times, CH 7, 2 SC in CH-1 sp, CH 7, SC in next CH-3 sp, rep from 1st * to 2nd * 8 times, end CH 7, sl st in top of CH-2. Cut C; join M.
3RD RND: With M, CH 2, SC in next SC, ** CH 3, SC in CH-7 lp, CH 3, * 2 SC in next SC, [DC, CH 2, DC] in next CH-3 sp [V st], sk DC, CH 1, DC; work V st of DC, CH 2, DC in next CH-3 sp, rep from * 7 times, end 2 SC in next SC, CH 3, SC in next CH-7 lps, CH 3, SC in each of next 2 SC, rep from ** to top of strip, join with sl st in top of starting CH 2. Fasten off. DO NOT turn.
4TH RND: Join R in 2nd CH-3 sp after joining, CH 4, 2 DC in same CH-3 sp, CH 1, DC in each of next 2 SC, * [CH 1, 2 DC in next CH-2 sp] twice, CH 1, DC in each of next 2 SC, rep from * 7 times, end CH 1, 2 DC in next CH-3 sp, CH 3, sl st in same sp. Fasten off. Sk next 2 CH-3 sps, join R in next CH-3 sp, CH 2, 2 DC in same sp, CH 1, DC in each of next 2 SC, work up side of strip same as other side, end 2 DC in CH-3 sp, CH 3, sl st in same sp.
Strip should meas 22” long.
5TH RND: From RS, join L in top of starting CH-3, CH 3, sk next 2 DC, * V st of DC, CH 2, DC in next CH-1 sp, sk next 2 DC, rep from * down strip, end CH 3, sk last 2 DC, sl st in top of CH-3. Fasten off.
Rep 5th rnd on other side of strip = 26 V sts on each side.
6TH RND: From RS, join M in top of starting CH 3, CH 3, work 3 DC in each CH-2 sp to lower edge, end CH 3, sl st in top of CH 3. Fasten off.
Rep 6th rnd on other side of strip = 26 grps of 3 DC on each side.
7TH RND: Join C in top of starting CH-3, CH 3, DC in back lp of each DC to lower edge, end CH 3, sl st in top of CH 3. Fasten off.
Rep 7th rnd on other side of strip = 78 DC on each side. Fasten off.
8TH RND: With M, rep 6th rnd.
ON MEDIUM SIZE ONLY, rep 6th rnd once more.
Strip should meas 8 1/2'” [9 ½”] wide.
BODY:
Beg at lower edge, with M, CH 115 [123]. Work V st of DC, CH 3, DC in 7th CH from hk, * sk next 3 CH, V st of DC, CH 3, DC in next CH, rep from * across, end sk next 3 CH, DC in last CH = 27 [29] V sts. CH 3, turn.
2ND ROW: * V st of DC, CH 3, DC in next CH-3 sp, rep from * across, end DC in 3rd CH of turning CH. CH 3, turn.
3RD -26TH ROWS: Rep 2nd row, end DC in top of TCH. CH 3, turn each row.
Piece should meas 25 ½” [28 ½”] wide.
DIVIDE WORK:
RIGHT FRONT YOKE:
1ST ROW: [V st in next CH-3 sp] 4 times, DC in next CH-3 sp. CH 3, turn.
2ND ROW: Rep last row.
3RD ROW: [V st in next CH-3 sp] 3 times, DC in next CH-3 sp [1 V st dec], CH 3, turn.
4TH ROW: Work 1 row even, CH 3, turn.
5TH ROW: [V st in next CH-3 sp] twice, DC in next CH-3 sp [V st dec], CH 3, turn.
Work 4 rows even, end arm side.
NEXT ROW: CH 6, DC in 1st DC [count as 1 V st], [V st in next CH-3 sp] twice, DC in top of turning sp, CH 3, turn.
NEXT ROW: [V st in next CH-3 sp] twice, V st in CH-6 sp, DC in 4th CH of CH-6 sp = 3 V sts.
ON MEDIUM SIZE ONLY, work 1 row even. Fasten off.
LEFT FRONT YOKE:
Join M in 5th V st from end on last long row, CH 3, [V st in next CH-3 sp] 4 times, DC in top of TCH. CH 3, turn.
2ND ROW: Work 1 row even.
3RD ROW: CH 3, DC in CH-3 sp, CH 3, DC in next CH-3 sp, [V st in next CH-3 sp] twice, DC in top of TCH = 1 V st dec.
Compl same as right front yoke, but reverse shaping.
BACK YOKE:
Join M in CH-3 sp last worked in at right underarm, CH 3, V st in next CH-3 sp, across back, end DC in CH-3 sp last worked in at left underarm = 17 [19] V sts.
Dec 1 V st each side EVERY OTHER row twice = 13 [15] V sts.
Work even for 4 rows.
Inc 1 V st each side of next row = 15 [17] V sts.
Work 1 [2] rows even. CH 3, turn.
NEXT ROW: V st in 1st CH-3 sp, * CH 3, SC in next CH-3 sp, rep from * to last V st, end V st in last V st, DC in top of TCH. Fasten off.
SLEEVES:
With M, CH 51 [59].
1ST ROW: V st of DC, CH 3, DC in 7th CH from hk, * sk next 3 CH, V st in next CH, rep from * across, end sk next 3 CH, DC in last CH = 11 [13] V sts. CH 6, turn.
2ND ROW: DC in 1st DC, * V st in next CH-3 sp, rep from * across, end [DC, CH 3, DC] in 3rd CH of starting CH. CH 3, turn.
3RD ROW: V st in 1st CH-3 sp, V st in each CH-3 sp across, end V st in CH-6 sp, DC in 4th CH of CH-6 sp = 13 [15] V sts. CH 1, turn.
SHAPE CAP:
NEXT ROW: SC in 1st CH-3 sp, CH 3, * V st in next V st, rep from * across, end DC in CH-3 sp of last V st = 1 V st dec each side. CH 1, turn.
Dec 1 V st each side every row 4 [5] times = 3 V sts. Fasten off.
FINISHING:
Weave 8 rows free at upper edge of front yoke, weave edges of strip to edges of body.
Sew shoulder seams.
Sew 3 rows of sleeve tog.
Sew in sleeves.
NECK EDGING:
From WS, join M at left shoulder, CH 3, 2 DC in 1st CH-3 sp, 3 DC in each CH-3 sp across back of neck, 2 DC in each of next 7 sps along right side of neck, sk next sp, 5 DC in joining of center strip to body, sk 1st M row on center strip, 2 Sc in each sp across strip [24 (28) SC across strip], sk last M row on center strip, 5 DC in joining, sk next sp, 2 Dc in each sp to shoulder, end sl st in top of CH-3. CH 2, turn.
NEXT ROW: From RS, SC in each of next 12 DC, sk 4 DC at corner of neck edge, [3 DC in sp before next DC] twice, sk 2 DC & 2 SC, work SC in each of next 20 [24] SC, sk next 2 SC & 2 DC, work [3 DC in sp before next DC] twice, sk 4 sts, SC in each st across rem sts, join with sl st in 1st SC. Fasten off.
