Vintage 1960s San Francisco Cable Dress #1174

SIZE:
Directions are for Size 10. 
Changes for Sizes 12, 14, 16 & 18 are in parentheses.


MATERIALS:
Columbia-Minerva Nantuk Dimension, 1 oz Skein: 19 (20-21-22-23)
1 Pair Each Boye Knitting Needles #5 & #6
1 Cable Needle


GAUGE: 
Over all allowing for "take-in" of pattern on # 6 needles:
11 sts = 2”
15 rows = 2”


MEASUREMENTS:
Width across hipline = 18¼” (19”-20”-21”-22”)
Hemline to back of neck = 36” (36¼”-36½”-36¾”-37”)
Width across back = 17¼” (18”-19”-20”-21”)
Width across shoulders = 14¼” (14½”-15”-15½”-16”)
Width across sleeve = 12¼” (12½”-13”-13¾”-14”)


NOTE: 
Instructions are for 36” (36¼”-36½”-36¾”-37”) dress meas from hemline to back of neck. To lengthen, make adjustment before 1st dec.


BACK: 
With #6 needles cast on 114 (116-120-122-128).


NEXT ROWS: K 1 & P 1 in ribbing for 4 rows.

NEXT ROW: P next row, inc 1 at beg of row ON SIZES 14 (16) ONLY.

NEXT ROW: Work in patt on 114 (116-121-123-128):

1ST ROW - RIGHT SIDE: K 13 (14-15-16-17), * P 5, sk 1 st, K in front of 2nd st but do not drop from needle, K skd st then drop both from left-hand needle for T 2, P 5 *, - ** K in back of next st, P 10; FOR PC: insert lefthand needle in strand before next st, then K in front then in back of this st 3 times, pass 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th sts over 1st one at time, with yarn in back sl 1st st to left-hand needle & P 2 tog & tighten to compl PC; P 10, K in back of next st **, [P 2 (2-3-3-4), K 6] twice, P 2 (2-3-3-4), rep from ** to ** once then rep from * to * once, K 13 (14-15-16-17).

NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 each side on next row, then every 1½” (1¾”-2¼”-3”-4½”) 6 (5-4-3-2) times more.

There are 100 (104-111-115-122) sts & width across hipline is 18¼” (19”-20”-21”-22”).

NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 each side every 2½” 3 times.

NEXT ROWS: Work on 94 (98-105-109-116) sts to 28” or desired length to underarm, end on wrong side.

Width across back is 17¼” (18”-19”-20”-21”).

ARMHOLES: 
NEXT ROWS: Bind off 5 (5-5-6-6) at beg of next 2 rows.


ON SIZES 14 (16-18) ONLY bind off 2 at beg of next 2 rows.

NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 each side every other row until 78 (80-83-85-88) rem.

NEXT ROWS: Work until armholes meas 7” (7¼”-7½”-7¾”-8”) straight above underarm, end on wrong side.

Width across shoulders is 14¼” (14½”-15”-15½”-16”).

SHOULDERS: 
NEXT ROWS: Bind off 8 at beg of next 6 (4-4-2-2) rows.


ON SIZES 12 (14-16-18) ONLY bind off 9 at beg of next 2 (2-4-4) rows.

Sl rem 30 (30-33-33-36) sts to holder for neck.

FRONT: 
Work same as back until armholes meas 4” (4¼”-4½”-4¾”-5”) straight above underarm.


NECK: 
Work 28 (29-29-30-30) sts & sl them to a holder, work center 22 (22-25-25-28) & sl them to 2nd holder for neck, work to end.


NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 at neck every other row 4 times.

NEXT ROWS: Work on 24 (25-25-26-26) sts to match back armhole.

SHOULDER: 
NEXT ROWS: Bind off 8 at armhole 3(2-2-1-1) times.


ON SIZES 12 (14-16-18) ONLY bind off 9 at same edge 1 (1-2-2) times. 

Start at neck, work other side.


SLEEVES: 
With #5 needles cast on 46 (48-50-50-52).


NEXT ROWS: K 1 & P 1 in ribbing for 10 rows.

NEXT ROW: P next row, inc 3 evenly spaced across.

Change to #6 needles & start patt on 49 (51-53-53-55) sts:

1ST ROW - RIGHT SIDE: K 1 (2-3-3-4), * P 5, T 2, P 5 *, K 1 in back, P 10, PC, P 10, K 1 in back, rep from * to * once, K 1 (2-3-3-4).

2ND & 4TH ROWS: K the K sts & P the P sts as they face you.

3RD ROW: K 1(2-3-3-4), * P 4, FT, BT, P 4 *, K 1 in back, P 21, K 1 in back, rep from * to * once, K 1 (2-3-3-4).

5TH ROW: K 1(2-3-3-4), * P 3, FT, P 2, BT, P 3 *, K 1 in back, P 8, PC, P 3, PC, P 8, K 1 in back, rep from  * to * once, K to end.

6TH ROW: K the K sts & P the P sts as they face you.

NEXT ROWS: Cont in patt, inc 1 each side on next row then every 10th (10th-10th-8th-8th) row 8 (8-8-10-10) times.

NEXT ROWS: Work on 67 (69-71-75-77) sts to 16” or desired length above start, end on wrong side.

Width across sleeve is 12¼” (12½”-13”-13¾”-14”).

SLEEVE CAP: 
NEXT ROWS: Bind off 5 (5-5-6-6) at beg of next 2 rows.


NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 each side every other row until 45 sts rem then dec 1 each side every row until 23 rem.

NEXT ROWS: Bind off 2 at beg of next 6 rows.

NEXT ROW: Bind off rem 11 sts.

NECKBAND: 
Sew left shoulder seam.


With #5 needles on right side, pick up & K 90 (90-96-96-102) around neck incl holders.

NEXT ROWS: K 1 & P 1 in ribbing for 4”.

NEXT ROW: Bind off in ribbing.

FINISHING:
Sew right shoulder, joining neckband.


Turn in half to inside & sew in place.

Sew in sleeves.

Seam sides & sleeves.
